1 And, in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams,and his spirit, was troubled, and, his sleep, had gone from him.2 So the king gave word to call for the sacred scribes and for the magicians, and for the users of incantations, and for the Chaldeans, that they might tell the king his dreams,they came in therefore, and stood before the king.3 And the king, said to them, A dream, have I dreamed,and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king, in Aramaic,O king, to the ages, live! Tell the dream to thy servants, and, the interpretation, we will declare.5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The word from me, is unalterable: If ye shall not make known to me the dream and the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and, your houses, into a dunghill, shall be turned;6 but, if, the dream and the interpretation thereof, ye will declare, gifts and a present and great dignity, shall ye receive from before me,therefore, the dream and the interpretation thereof, declare ye unto me.7 They answered again and said,Let, the king, tell, the dream, to his servants, and, the interpretation thereof, we will declare.8 The king answered and said, Of a certainty, I know, that, time, ye, would gain,merely because ye see that, unalterable, from me, is the word:9 That, if, the dream, ye shall not make known to me, one and the same, is the decree, and, a lying and wicked word, have ye agreed to speak before me, that meanwhile the time may be changed,therefore, the dream, tell ye me, so shall I know that, the interpretation thereof, ye can declare for me.10 The Chaldeans answered before the king and said, There is not a man upon the earth, who can declare, the matter of the king,although indeed, there is no king, chief ruler who, a thing like this, hath asked of any sacred scribe or magician or Chaldean;11 and, the thing which the king hath asked, is difficult, and, none other, is there, who can declare it before the king,saving the gods whose dwelling is, not with flesh.12 For this cause, the king, was provoked and exceedingly indignant,and gave word to destroy all the wise men of Babylon;13 and, the decree, went forth, that, the wise men, should be slain,and they sought Daniel and his companions that they might be slain.14 Immediately, Daniel, made answer with prudence and discretion, to Arioch, chief of the executioners of the king,who had come forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:15 he began to speak and said to Arioch the kings captain,For what cause, is the decree raging forth from before the king? Then did Arioch make the matter known unto Daniel.16 So Daniel entered in, and desired of the king,that, an appointed time, he would give him, and then, the interpretation, he would declare unto the king.17 Then Daniel, to his own house, departed,and, to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, made the matter known;18 that, tender compassion, they might seek from before the God of the heavens, concerning this secret,that Daniel and his companions, might not be destroyed, with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.19 Then, unto Danielin a vision of the night, the secret was revealed,whereupon, Daniel, blessed the God of the heavens:20 Daniel responded, and said, Let the name of God be blessed from age to age,in that wisdom and might, to him belong;21 And, he, changeth times and seasons, removeth kings, and setteth up kings,giving wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to them who are skilled in understanding:22 He, revealeth the deep things, and the hidden,knoweth what is in the darkness, and, light, with him, doth dwell.23 Unto the, O God of my fathers, do I render thanks and praise, in that, wisdom and might, thou hast given unto me,yea, already, hast thou made known to me that which we desired of thee, for, the matter of the king, hast thou made known unto us.24 Therefore, Daniel entered in unto Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon,he went in, and, thus, he said unto him, The wise men of Babylon, do not thou destroy, bring me in before the king, and, the interpretationunto the king, will I declare.25 Thereupon, Ariochwith haste, brought in Daniel before the king,and, thus, he said to himI have found a man of the sons of the exile of Judah, who, the interpretationunto the king, will make known.26 The king answered and said unto Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar,Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?27 Daniel answered before the king, and said,The secret which the king hath asked, the wise men, the magicians, the sacred scribes, the astrologers, are not able to declare unto the king;28 but there is a God in the heavens, who revealeth secrets, and hath made known to King Nebuchadnezzar, what shall come to pass, in the afterpart of the days: Thy dream and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are, these:29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts upon thy bed, arose regarding what should come to pass hereafter; and, he that revealeth secrets, made known to thee what shall come to pass.30 But, as for menot for any wisdom that is in me, more than any of the living, is, this secret, revealed to me,therefore, it is in order that, the interpretationunto the king, they should make known, and that, the thoughts of thy heart, thou shouldst get to know.31 As for thee, O king, thou wast looking, when lo! a great image, this image, being mighty, and the brightness thereof surpassing, was standing before thee,and, the appearance thereof, was terrible.32 As for this image, its head, was of fine gold, its breast and its arms, were of silver,its belly and its thighs, of bronze;33 its legs, of iron,and, its feet, part of them, of iron, and, part of them, of clay.34 Thou didst look, until that a stone tare itself away, not by the aid of hands, and smote the image upon its feet, which were of iron and clay,and they were broken in pieces.35 Then were broken in pieces at once, the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, and became like chaff out of the summer threshing-floors, and the wind, carried them away, and, no place, was found for them,but, the stone that smote the image, became a mighty rock, and filled all the land.36 This, is the dream, and, the interpretation thereof, we will tell before the king.37 Thou, O king, art the king of kings,for, the God of the heavens, hath given unto thee, the kingship, the might, the power and the dignity;38 and, wheresoever the sons of men do dwell, the wild beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens, hath he given into thy hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou, art the head of gold.39 And, after thee, shall arise another kingdom, inferior to thee,and anothera third kingdom, of bronze, which shall bear rule throughout all the earth.40 And, the fourth kingdom, shall be hard as iron,in like manner as iron breaketh in pieces and crusheth all things,even as iron which bringeth to ruins all these, shall it break in pieces and bring to ruins.41 And, whereas thou sawest the feet and the toes, part of them of potters clay, and part of them of iron, the kingdom, shall be, divided, and, of the hardness of the iron, shall there be in it,forasmuch as thou sawest, the iron, combined with the miry clay;42 and, the toes of the feet, part of them, iron, and, part, of clay,some part of the kingdom, shall be strong, but, a part thereof, shall be brittle;43 and, whereas thou sawest, the iron, combined with the miry clay, they shall be combined with the seed of men, but shall not cleave firmly one to another,lo! as iron is not to be combined with clay.44 And, in the days of those kings, shall the God of the heavens, set up, a kingdom which, to the ages, shall not be destroyed, and, the kingdom, to another people, shall not be left,it shall break in pieces and make an end of all these kingdoms, but, itself, shall stand to the ages.45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that, out of the rock, a stone tare itself away, but not with hands, and brake in pieces the clay, the iron, the bronze, the silver and the gold, the mighty God, hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter. Exact then is the dream, and trusty its interpretation.46 Then, King Nebuchadnezzar, fell upon his face, and, unto Daniel, paid adoration; and, a present and sweet odours, gave he word to pour out unto him.47 The king answered Daniel, and saidOf a truth, your God, is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a Revealer of secrets,seeing thou wast able to reveal this secret.48 Then, the king, exalted, Daniel, and, many large presents, gave he unto him, and set him to be ruler over all the province of Babylon,and chief of the nobles, over all the wise men of Babylon.49 And, Daniel, desired of the king, and he appointedover the business of the province of BabylonShadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego,but, Daniel himself, was in the gate of the king.

1 E no segundo ano do reinado de Nabucodonosor, teve Nabucodonosor uns sonhos; e o seu espírito se perturbou, e passou-se-lhe o seu sono. 2 E o rei mandou chamar os magos, e os astrólogos, e os encantadores, e os caldeus, para que declarassem ao rei qual tinha sido o seu sonho; e eles vieram e se apresentaram diante do rei. 3 E o rei lhes disse: Tive um sonho; e, para saber o sonho, está perturbado o meu espírito. 4 E os caldeus disseram ao rei em siríaco: Ó rei, vive eternamente! Dize o sonho a teus servos, e daremos a interpretação. 5 Respondeu o rei e disse aos caldeus: O que foi me tem escapado; se me não fizerdes saber o sonho e a sua interpretação, sereis despedaçados, e as vossas casas serão feitas um monturo; 6 mas, se vós me declarardes o sonho e a sua interpretação, recebereis de mim presentes, e dádivas, e grande honra; portanto, declarai-me o sonho e a sua interpretação. 7 Responderam segunda vez e disseram: Diga o rei o sonho a seus servos, e daremos a sua interpretação. 8 Respondeu o rei e disse: Percebo muito bem que vós quereis ganhar tempo; porque vedes que o que eu sonhei me tem escapado. 9 Por consequência, se me não fazeis saber o sonho, uma só sentença será a vossa; pois vós preparastes palavras mentirosas e perversas para as proferirdes na minha presença, até que se mude o tempo; portanto, dizei-me o sonho, para que eu entenda que me podeis dar a sua interpretação. 10 Responderam os caldeus na presença do rei e disseram: Não há ninguém sobre a terra que possa declarar a palavra ao rei; pois nenhum rei há, senhor ou dominador, que requeira coisa semelhante de algum mago, ou astrólogo, ou caldeu. 11 Porquanto a coisa que o rei requer é difícil, e ninguém há que a possa declarar diante do rei, senão os deuses, cuja morada não é com a carne.

12 Então, o rei muito se irou e enfureceu; e ordenou que matassem a todos os sábios de Babilônia. 13 E saiu o decreto segundo o qual deviam ser mortos os sábios; e buscaram Daniel e os seus companheiros, para que fossem mortos. 14 Então, Daniel falou avisada e prudentemente a Arioque, capitão da guarda do rei, que tinha saído para matar os sábios de Babilônia. 15 Respondeu e disse a Arioque, encarregado do rei: Por que se apressa tanto o mandado da parte do rei? Então, Arioque explicou o caso a Daniel. 16 E Daniel entrou e pediu ao rei que lhe desse tempo, para que pudesse dar a interpretação.

17 Então, Daniel foi para a sua casa e fez saber o caso a Hananias, Misael e Azarias, seus companheiros, 18 para que pedissem misericórdia ao Deus dos céus sobre este segredo, a fim de que Daniel e seus companheiros não perecessem com o resto dos sábios da Babilônia. 19 Então, foi revelado o segredo a Daniel numa visão de noite; e Daniel louvou o Deus do céu. 20 Falou Daniel e disse: Seja bendito o nome de Deus para todo o sempre, porque dele é a sabedoria e a força; 21 ele muda os tempos e as horas; ele remove os reis e estabelece os reis; ele dá sabedoria aos sábios e ciência aos inteligentes. 22 Ele revela o profundo e o escondido e conhece o que está em trevas; e com ele mora a luz.

23 Ó Deus de meus pais, eu te louvo e celebro porque me deste sabedoria e força; e, agora, me fizeste saber o que te pedimos, porque nos fizeste saber este assunto do rei.

24 Por isso, Daniel foi ter com Arioque, ao qual o rei tinha constituído para matar os sábios da Babilônia; entrou e disse-lhe assim: Não mates os sábios de Babilônia; introduze-me na presença do rei, e darei ao rei a interpretação. 25 Então, Arioque depressa introduziu Daniel na presença do rei e disse-lhe assim: Achei um dentre os filhos dos cativos de Judá, o qual fará saber ao rei a interpretação. 26 Respondeu o rei e disse a Daniel (cujo nome era Beltessazar): Podes tu fazer-me saber o sonho que vi e a sua interpretação? 27 Respondeu Daniel na presença do rei e disse: O segredo que o rei requer, nem sábios, nem astrólogos, nem magos, nem adivinhos o podem descobrir ao rei. 28 Mas há um Deus nos céus, o qual revela os segredos; ele, pois, fez saber ao rei Nabucodonosor o que há de ser no fim dos dias; o teu sonho e as visões da tua cabeça na tua cama são estas: 29 Estando tu, ó rei, na tua cama, subiram os teus pensamentos ao que há de ser depois disto. Aquele, pois, que revela os segredos te fez saber o que há de ser. 30 E a mim me foi revelado este segredo, não porque haja em mim mais sabedoria do que em todos os viventes, mas para que a interpretação se fizesse saber ao rei e para que entendesses os pensamentos do teu coração.

31 Tu, ó rei, estavas vendo, e eis aqui uma grande estátua; essa estátua, que era grande, e cujo esplendor era excelente, estava em pé diante de ti; e a sua vista era terrível. 32 A cabeça daquela estátua era de ouro fino; o seu peito e os seus braços, de prata; o seu ventre e as suas coxas, de cobre; 33 as pernas, de ferro; os seus pés, em parte de ferro e em parte de barro. 34 Estavas vendo isso, quando uma pedra foi cortada, sem mão, a qual feriu a estátua nos pés de ferro e de barro e os esmiuçou. 35 Então, foi juntamente esmiuçado o ferro, o barro, o cobre, a prata e o ouro, os quais se fizeram como a pragana das eiras no estio, e o vento os levou, e não se achou lugar algum para eles; mas a pedra que feriu a estátua se fez um grande monte e encheu toda a terra.

36 Este é o sonho; também a interpretação dele diremos na presença do rei. 37 Tu, ó rei, és rei de reis, pois o Deus dos céus te tem dado o reino, e o poder, e a força, e a majestade. 38 E, onde quer que habitem filhos de homens, animais do campo e aves do céu, ele tos entregou na tua mão e fez que dominasses sobre todos eles; tu és a cabeça de ouro. 39 E, depois de ti, se levantará outro reino, inferior ao teu, e um terceiro reino, de metal, o qual terá domínio sobre toda a terra. 40 E o quarto reino será forte como ferro; pois, como o ferro esmiúça e quebra tudo, como o ferro quebra todas as coisas, ele esmiuçará e quebrantará. 41 E, quanto ao que viste dos pés e dos artelhos, em parte de barro de oleiro e em parte de ferro, isso será um reino dividido; contudo, haverá nele alguma coisa da firmeza do ferro, pois que viste o ferro misturado com barro de lodo. 42 E, como os artelhos eram em parte de ferro e em parte de barro, assim por uma parte o reino será forte e por outra será frágil. 43 Quanto ao que viste do ferro misturado com barro de lodo, misturar-se-ão com semente humana, mas não se ligarão um ao outro, assim como o ferro se não mistura com o barro. 44 Mas, nos dias desses reis, o Deus do céu levantará um reino que não será jamais destruído; e esse reino não passará a outro povo; esmiuçará e consumirá todos esses reinos e será estabelecido para sempre. 45 Da maneira como viste que do monte foi cortada uma pedra, sem mãos, e ela esmiuçou o ferro, o cobre, o barro, a prata e o ouro, o Deus grande fez saber ao rei o que há de ser depois disso; e certo é o sonho, e fiel a sua interpretação.

46 Então, o rei Nabucodonosor caiu sobre o seu rosto, e adorou a Daniel, e ordenou que lhe fizessem oferta de manjares e perfumes suaves. 47 Respondeu o rei a Daniel e disse: Certamente, o vosso Deus é Deus dos deuses, e o Senhor dos reis, e o revelador dos segredos, pois pudeste revelar este segredo. 48 Então, o rei engrandeceu a Daniel, e lhe deu muitos e grandes presentes, e o pôs por governador de toda a província de Babilônia, como também por principal governador de todos os sábios de Babilônia. 49 E pediu Daniel ao rei, e constituiu ele sobre os negócios da província de Babilônia a Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego; mas Daniel estava às portas do rei.
