1 But, when the seventh month was come, and the sons of Israel were in cities, then did the people gather themselves together as one man, unto Jerusalem.2 Then aroseJeshua son of Jozadak and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his brethren, and built the altar of the God of Israel,to offer thereon ascending-sacrifices, as it was written in the law of Moses, the man of God.3 So they settled the altar upon its stands, for, dread, was upon them, because of the peoples of the countries,therefore caused they to go up thereon, ascending-sacrifices unto Yahweh, ascending-sacrifices for the morning and for the evening.4 And they kept the festival of booths, as it was written,and the ascending-offering of each day upon its own day, by number, according to regulation, the matter of a day upon its day;5 and, afterwards, the continual ascending-sacrifice, and, on the new moons, and on all the appointed seasons of Yahweh, the hallowed things,also for every one that volunteered a voluntary offering unto Yahweh.6 From the first day of the seventh month, began they to offer up ascending-sacrifices unto Yahweh,but, the temple of Yahweh, had not had its foundation laid.7 And they gave silver, unto the masons and carpenters,and food and drink and oil, unto them of Zidon and unto them of Tyre, to bring in cedar-trees out of the Lebanon, unto the sea of Joppa, according to the grant of Cyrus king of Persia unto them.8 Now, in the second year of their coming in unto the house of God, to Jerusalem, in the second month, began Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak and the rest of their brethrenthe priests and the Levites, and all that were come out of the captivity to Jerusalem, and stationed the Levites, of twenty years old and upwards, to preside over the work of the house of Yahweh.9 So they took their stationeven Jeshua, his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, sons of Judah, as one man to preside over the doer of the work in the house of God, the sons of Henadad, their sons and their brethren, the Levites.10 And, when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of Yahweh, then the priests, enrobed, took their stand with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to offer praise unto Yahweh, after the instructions of David king of Israel.11 And, when they made responses in offering praise and in giving thanks unto YahwehFor he is good, for, age-abiding, is his lovingkindness, upon Israel, then, all the people, shouted with a great shout, in offering praise unto Yahweh, over the laying of the foundation of the house of Yahweh.12 But, many of the priests and the Levites and the ancestral chiefs, who were old men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, were weeping with a loud voice,many, however, shouting and rejoicing, with voice raised on high;13 so that the people could not distinguish the noise of the shout of joy, from the noise of the weeping of the people,for, the people, did shout with a great shout, and, the noise, was heard afar off.

1 Chegando, pois, o sétimo mês e estando os filhos de Israel já nas cidades, se ajuntou o povo, como um só homem, em Jerusalém. 2 E levantou-se Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e seus irmãos, os sacerdotes, e Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, e seus irmãos e edificaram o altar do Deus de Israel, para oferecerem sobre ele holocaustos, como está escrito na Lei de Moisés, o homem de Deus. 3 E firmaram o altar sobre as suas bases, porque o terror estava sobre eles, por causa dos povos das terras; e ofereceram sobre ele holocaustos ao Senhor, holocaustos de manhã e de tarde. 4 E celebraram a Festa dos Tabernáculos, como está escrito, e ofereceram holocaustos de dia em dia, por ordem, conforme o rito, cada coisa no seu dia; 5 e, depois disso, o holocausto contínuo e os das luas novas e de todas as solenidades consagradas ao Senhor, como também de qualquer que oferecia oferta voluntária ao Senhor. 6 Desde o primeiro dia do sétimo mês, começaram a oferecer holocaustos ao Senhor; porém ainda não estavam postos os fundamentos do templo do Senhor. 7 Deram, pois, o dinheiro aos cortadores e artífices, como também comida, e bebida, e azeite aos sidônios e aos tírios, para trazerem do Líbano madeira de cedro ao mar, para Jope, segundo a concessão que lhes tinha feito Ciro, rei da Pérsia.

8 E, no segundo ano da sua vinda à Casa de Deus, em Jerusalém, no segundo mês, começaram Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, e Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e os outros seus irmãos, os sacerdotes e os levitas, e todos os que vieram do cativeiro a Jerusalém e constituíram levitas da idade de vinte anos e daí para cima, para que aviassem a obra da Casa do Senhor. 9 Então, se levantou Jesua, seus filhos e seus irmãos, Cadmiel e seus filhos, os filhos de Judá, como um só homem, para vigiarem os que faziam a obra na Casa de Deus, os filhos de Henadade, seus filhos e seus irmãos, os levitas.

10 Quando, pois, os edificadores lançaram os alicerces do templo do Senhor, então, apresentaram-se os sacerdotes, já paramentados e com trombetas, e os levitas, filhos de Asafe, com saltérios, para louvarem ao Senhor, conforme a instituição de Davi, rei de Israel. 11 E cantavam a revezes, louvando e celebrando ao Senhor, porque é bom; porque a sua benignidade dura para sempre sobre Israel. E todo o povo jubilou com grande júbilo, quando louvou o Senhor, pela fundação da Casa do Senhor. 12 Porém muitos dos sacerdotes, e levitas, e chefes dos pais, já velhos, que viram a primeira casa sobre o seu fundamento, vendo perante os seus olhos esta casa, choraram em altas vozes; mas muitos levantaram as vozes com júbilo e com alegria. 13 De maneira que não discernia o povo as vozes de alegria das vozes do choro do povo; porque o povo jubilava com tão grande júbilo, que as vozes se ouviam de mui longe.
