1 Now the apostles and the brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him,3 saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?"4 But Peter began and explained to them in order:5 "I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, something descending, like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came down to me.6 Looking at it closely I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air.7 And I heard a voice saying to me, `Rise, Peter; kill and eat.'8 But I said, `No, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.'9 But the voice answered a second time from heaven, `What God has cleansed you must not call common.'10 This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven.11 At that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesare'a.12 And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brethren also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house.13 And he told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, `Send to Joppa and bring Simon called Peter;14 he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.'15 As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning.16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, `John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'17 If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?"18 When they heard this they were silenced. And they glorified God, saying, "Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance unto life."19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoeni'cia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none except Jews.20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyre'ne, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus.21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord.22 News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.23 When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose;24 for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord.25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul;26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians.27 Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.28 And one of them named Ag'abus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world; and this took place in the days of Claudius.29 And the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brethren who lived in Judea;30 and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

1 Os apóstolos e os outros seguidores de Jesus em toda a região da Judeia souberam que os não judeus também haviam recebido a palavra de Deus. 2 Quando Pedro voltou para Jerusalém, aqueles que queriam que os não judeus fossem circuncidados o criticaram, 3 dizendo:

— Você ficou hospedado na casa de homens que não são circuncidados e até tomou refeições com eles!

4 Então Pedro deu um relatório completo de tudo o que havia acontecido, desde o começo. Ele disse:

5 — Eu estava na cidade de Jope e lá, enquanto estava orando, tive uma visão. Vi uma coisa parecida com um grande lençol, que baixou do céu, amarrado pelas quatro pontas, e parou perto de mim. 6 Eu olhei para dentro daquilo com atenção e vi animais domésticos, animais selvagens, animais que se arrastam pelo chão e aves. 7 Depois ouvi uma voz, que me dizia: "Pedro, levante-se! Mate e coma!" 8 Eu respondi: "Isso não, Senhor! Eu nunca comi nenhuma coisa que a lei considera suja ou impura!" 9 Então a voz falou de novo do céu: "Não chame de impuro aquilo que Deus purificou." 10 Isso aconteceu três vezes, e depois tudo aquilo voltou para o céu. 11 Justamente naquela hora três homens que tinham sido mandados de Cesareia para me buscar chegaram à casa onde eu estava hospedado. 12 E o Espírito de Deus me disse que fosse com eles, sem duvidar. Estes seis irmãos da cidade de Jope também foram comigo, e todos nós entramos na casa de Cornélio. 13 Então ele nos contou como viu na casa dele um anjo, em pé, que lhe disse: "Mande alguém a Jope para buscar Simão, que também é chamado de Pedro. 14 Ele vai dizer como você e toda a sua família podem ser salvos."

15 E Pedro continuou:

— Quando comecei a falar, o Espírito Santo veio sobre eles, como tinha vindo sobre nós no princípio. 16 Aí eu lembrei que o Senhor Jesus tinha dito: "É verdade que João batizou com água, mas vocês serão batizados com o Espírito Santo." 17 De fato, os não judeus receberam de Deus o mesmo dom que nós recebemos quando cremos no Senhor Jesus Cristo. E quem era eu para ir contra Deus?

18 Quando ouviram isso, eles ficaram sem ter o que dizer e louvaram a Deus, dizendo:

— Então Deus deu também aos não judeus a oportunidade de se arrependerem e ganharem a vida eterna!

19 Os seguidores de Jesus foram espalhados pela perseguição que havia começado com a morte de Estêvão. Alguns foram até a região da Fenícia, a ilha de Chipre e a cidade de Antioquia e anunciavam a palavra de Deus somente aos judeus. 20 Mas outros, que eram de Chipre e da cidade de Cirene, foram até Antioquia e falaram também aos não judeus, anunciando a eles a boa notícia a respeito do Senhor Jesus. 21 O poder do Senhor estava com eles, e muitas pessoas creram e se converteram ao Senhor.

22 Essas notícias chegaram à igreja de Jerusalém, que resolveu mandar Barnabé para Antioquia. 23 Quando chegou lá e viu como Deus tinha abençoado aquela gente, Barnabé ficou muito alegre. E animou todos a continuarem fiéis ao Senhor, de todo o coração. 24 Barnabé era um homem bom, cheio do Espírito Santo e de fé. E muitos se converteram ao Senhor.

25 Depois Barnabé foi até a cidade de Tarso a fim de buscar Saulo. 26 Quando o encontrou, ele o levou para Antioquia. Eles se reuniram durante um ano com a gente daquela igreja e ensinaram muitas pessoas. Foi em Antioquia que, pela primeira vez, os seguidores de Jesus foram chamados de cristãos.

27 Naquele tempo alguns profetas foram de Jerusalém para Antioquia. 28 Um deles, chamado Ágabo, levantou-se e, pelo poder do Espírito Santo, anunciou:

— Haverá uma grande falta de alimentos no mundo inteiro.

Isso aconteceu quando Cláudio era o Imperador romano.

29 Então os cristãos resolveram mandar ajuda aos irmãos que moravam na região da Judeia, e cada um deu de acordo com o que tinha. 30 E mandaram o dinheiro por meio de Barnabé e Saulo, para que eles o entregassem aos presbíteros da igreja.
