1 And Paul, looking intently at the council, said, "Brethren, I have lived before God in all good conscience up to this day."2 And the high priest Anani'as commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.3 Then Paul said to him, "God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?"4 Those who stood by said, "Would you revile God's high priest?"5 And Paul said, "I did not know, brethren, that he was the high priest; for it is written, `You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'"6 But when Paul perceived that one part were Sad'ducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, "Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead I am on trial."7 And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sad'ducees; and the assembly was divided.8 For the Sad'ducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.9 Then a great clamor arose; and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and contended, "We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?"10 And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Take courage, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must bear witness also at Rome."12 When it was day, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.13 There were more than forty who made this conspiracy.14 And they went to the chief priests and elders, and said, "We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul.15 You therefore, along with the council, give notice now to the tribune to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case more exactly. And we are ready to kill him before he comes near."16 Now the son of Paul's sister heard of their ambush; so he went and entered the barracks and told Paul.17 And Paul called one of the centurions and said, "Take this young man to the tribune; for he has something to tell him."18 So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said, "Paul the prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you."19 The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, "What is it that you have to tell me?"20 And he said, "The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closely about him.21 But do not yield to them; for more than forty of their men lie in ambush for him, having bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him; and now they are ready, waiting for the promise from you."22 So the tribune dismissed the young man, charging him, "Tell no one that you have informed me of this."23 Then he called two of the centurions and said, "At the third hour of the night get ready two hundred soldiers with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesare'a.24 Also provide mounts for Paul to ride, and bring him safely to Felix the governor."25 And he wrote a letter to this effect:26 "Claudius Lys'ias to his Excellency the governor Felix, greeting.27 This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them, when I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman citizen.28 And desiring to know the charge on which they accused him, I brought him down to their council.29 I found that he was accused about questions of their law, but charged with nothing deserving death or imprisonment.30 And when it was disclosed to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once, ordering his accusers also to state before you what they have against him."31 So the soldiers, according to their instructions, took Paul and brought him by night to Antip'atris.32 And on the morrow they returned to the barracks, leaving the horsemen to go on with him.33 When they came to Caesare'a and delivered the letter to the governor, they presented Paul also before him.34 On reading the letter, he asked to what province he belonged. When he learned that he was from Cili'cia35 he said, "I will hear you when your accusers arrive." And he commanded him to be guarded in Herod's praetorium.

1 Então Paulo olhou firmemente para os membros do Conselho e disse:

— Meus irmãos, tenho vivido até hoje com a consciência limpa diante de Deus.

2 Mas Ananias, o Grande Sacerdote, mandou que os homens que estavam perto de Paulo dessem um tapa na boca dele. 3 Aí Paulo disse a Ananias:

— Hipócrita, Deus o castigará por isso! Você está sentado aí para me julgar de acordo com a Lei, não é? Então como é que mandou bater em mim? Isso é contra a Lei!

4 Os homens que estavam perto de Paulo perguntaram:

— Você está insultando o Grande Sacerdote, o servo de Deus?

5 Paulo respondeu:

— Meus irmãos, eu não sabia que ele é o Grande Sacerdote. Pois as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: "Não fale mal de nenhuma das autoridades do seu povo."

6 Quando Paulo percebeu que alguns do Conselho eram do partido dos saduceus e outros do partido dos fariseus, disse bem alto:

— Meus irmãos, eu sou fariseu e filho de fariseus. Estou aqui sendo julgado porque creio que os mortos vão ressuscitar.

7 Assim que ele disse isso, os fariseus e os saduceus começaram a discutir, e o Conselho se dividiu. 8 É que os saduceus não creem que os mortos vão ressuscitar, nem que existem anjos ou espíritos; mas os fariseus creem nessas coisas. 9 E assim a gritaria aumentou ainda mais. Então alguns mestres da Lei que pertenciam ao partido dos fariseus se levantaram e protestaram. Eles disseram:

— Não vemos nenhum mal neste homem. Pode ser mesmo que um anjo ou um espírito tenha falado com ele.

10 A briga chegou a tal ponto, que o comandante ficou com medo de que Paulo fosse despedaçado por eles. Por isso mandou os guardas descerem para tirar Paulo do meio deles e o levar de volta para a fortaleza.

11 Na noite seguinte o Senhor Jesus apareceu a Paulo e disse:

— Tenha coragem, Paulo! Você falou a meu respeito aqui em Jerusalém e vai falar também em Roma.

12 Na manhã seguinte alguns judeus se ajuntaram e juraram que não iam comer nem beber nada enquanto não matassem Paulo. 13 Os homens que combinaram fazer isso eram mais de quarenta. 14 Eles foram falar com os chefes dos sacerdotes e com os líderes do povo e disseram:

— Nós fizemos o seguinte juramento: "Que Deus nos amaldiçoe se comermos ou bebermos qualquer coisa enquanto não matarmos Paulo." 15 Agora vocês e o Conselho Superior, mandem pedir ao comandante que traga Paulo aqui. Digam que estão querendo examinar melhor o caso dele. Então, antes que ele chegue, nós estaremos prontos para matá-lo.

16 Mas o filho da irmã de Paulo ficou sabendo do plano; ele entrou na fortaleza e contou tudo a Paulo. 17 Então Paulo chamou um dos oficiais e disse:

— Leve este moço ao comandante. Ele tem uma coisa para contar a ele.

18 O oficial levou o moço ao comandante e disse:

— Aquele preso que se chama Paulo mandou me chamar e pediu que eu trouxesse este moço porque ele tem uma informação para o senhor.

19 O comandante pegou o moço pela mão, levou-o para um lado e perguntou:

— O que é que você tem para me contar?

20 Ele respondeu:

— Alguns judeus combinaram pedir ao senhor que leve Paulo amanhã ao Conselho Superior, com a desculpa de quererem examinar melhor o caso dele. 21 Mas não acredite nisso, pois mais de quarenta deles vão ficar escondidos esperando Paulo para o matar. Todos eles fizeram este juramento: "Que Deus nos amaldiçoe se comermos ou bebermos qualquer coisa antes de termos matado Paulo." Eles estão prontos para cumprir o juramento e esperam apenas saber o que o senhor vai resolver.

22 Então o comandante respondeu:

— Não diga a ninguém que você me contou isso.

E mandou que o moço fosse embora.

23 Então o comandante chamou dois oficiais e disse:

— Arranjem duzentos soldados, e mais setenta cavaleiros, e duzentos lanceiros para ir até a cidade de Cesareia. Estejam prontos para sair daqui às nove horas da noite. 24 Preparem também cavalos para Paulo montar e o levem com toda a segurança para o governador Félix.

25 Depois o comandante escreveu uma carta que dizia o seguinte:

26 "Excelentíssimo Governador Félix,

"Saudações.

27 "Alguns judeus agarraram este homem e quase o mataram. Quando soube que ele era cidadão romano, eu fui com os meus soldados e não deixei que ele fosse morto. 28 Eu queria saber por que o estavam acusando e por isso resolvi levá-lo diante do Conselho Superior dos judeus. 29 Então descobri que ele não tinha feito nada para merecer a prisão ou a morte. A acusação contra ele era a respeito da própria lei deles. 30 Quando fui informado de que havia um plano para matá-lo, resolvi mandá-lo ao senhor. E disse para aqueles judeus que fizessem as acusações na sua presença.

"Saúde.

"Cláudio Lísias."

31 Então os soldados cumpriram as ordens. Pegaram Paulo e o levaram durante a noite até a cidade de Antipátride. 32 No dia seguinte os soldados voltaram para a fortaleza, deixando que os cavaleiros continuassem a viagem com Paulo. 33 Eles o levaram para a cidade de Cesareia, deram a carta ao Governador e lhe entregaram Paulo. 34 O Governador leu a carta e perguntou a Paulo de onde ele era. Quando soube que era da região da Cilícia, 35 disse:

— Quando os seus acusadores chegarem, eu ouvirei o que você tem para dizer.

Em seguida mandou que ele ficasse preso no palácio do Governador .
