1 Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar, to Abim'elech king of the Philistines.2 And the LORD appeared to him, and said, "Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you.3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will fulfil the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.4 I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give to your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves:5 because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."6 So Isaac dwelt in Gerar.7 When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, "She is my sister"; for he feared to say, "My wife," thinking, "lest the men of the place should kill me for the sake of Rebekah"; because she was fair to look upon.8 When he had been there a long time, Abim'elech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac fondling Rebekah his wife.9 So Abim'elech called Isaac, and said, "Behold, she is your wife; how then could you say, `She is my sister'?" Isaac said to him, "Because I thought, `Lest I die because of her.'"10 Abim'elech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us."11 So Abim'elech warned all the people, saying, "Whoever touches this man or his wife shall be put to death."12 And Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The LORD blessed him,13 and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.14 He had possessions of flocks and herds, and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him.15 (Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.)16 And Abim'elech said to Isaac, "Go away from us; for you are much mightier than we."17 So Isaac departed from there, and encamped in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there.18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water which had been dug in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham; and he gave them the names which his father had given them.19 But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of springing water,20 the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." So he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also; so he called its name Sitnah.22 And he moved from there and dug another well, and over that they did not quarrel; so he called its name Reho'both, saying, "For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land."23 From there he went up to Beer-sheba.24 And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father; fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your descendants for my servant Abraham's sake."25 So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac's servants dug a well.26 Then Abim'elech went to him from Gerar with Ahuz'zath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army.27 Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?"28 They said, "We see plainly that the LORD is with you; so we say, let there be an oath between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you,29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD."30 So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.31 In the morning they rose early and took oath with one another; and Isaac set them on their way, and they departed from him in peace.32 That same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water."33 He called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba to this day.34 When Esau was forty years old, he took to wife Judith the daughter of Be-e'ri the Hittite, and Bas'emath the daughter of Elon the Hittite;35 and they made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.

1 Naquela região houve uma época de falta de alimentos, como tinha acontecido antes, no tempo de Abraão. Por isso Isaque foi até a cidade de Gerar, onde vivia Abimeleque, o rei dos filisteus. 2 Ali o Senhor Deus apareceu a Isaque e disse:

— Não vá para o Egito. Fique na terra que eu vou lhe mostrar. 3 Por enquanto fique morando neste lugar, e eu estarei com você e o abençoarei. Darei aos seus descendentes todas estas terras e assim cumprirei o juramento que fiz a Abraão, o seu pai. 4 Farei com que os seus descendentes sejam tão numerosos quanto as estrelas do céu e lhes darei todas estas terras. Por meio dos seus descendentes eu abençoarei todas as nações do mundo, 5 pois Abraão me obedeceu e cumpriu as minhas ordens, os meus mandamentos, as minhas leis e os meus ensinamentos.

6 Assim, Isaque ficou morando em Gerar. 7 Quando os homens do lugar lhe fizeram perguntas sobre a sua mulher, ele disse que ela era sua irmã. Rebeca era muito bonita, e Isaque tinha medo de dizer que ela era a sua mulher, pois pensava que os homens do lugar o matariam para ficarem com ela.

8 Isaque ficou ali muito tempo. Um dia Abimeleque, o rei dos filisteus, olhou por uma janela e viu Isaque acariciando Rebeca, a sua mulher. 9 Então Abimeleque mandou chamar Isaque e perguntou:

— Ela é a sua mulher, não é verdade? Por que você disse que ela era sua irmã?

— É que eu pensei que me matariam se eu dissesse que ela era a minha mulher — respondeu Isaque.

10 Aí Abimeleque disse:

— Por que você nos fez isso? Um de nós poderia facilmente ter ido para a cama com ela, e você teria feito com que a culpa caísse sobre nós.

11 Então Abimeleque mandou a todo o seu povo o seguinte aviso: "Se alguém tratar mal este homem ou a sua mulher, será morto."

12 Naquele ano Isaque fez plantações ali e colheu cem vezes mais do que semeou, pois o Senhor Deus o abençoou. 13 Ele foi enriquecendo cada vez mais e se tornou muito rico e poderoso. 14 Isaque tinha tantas ovelhas e cabras, tanto gado e tantos empregados, que os filisteus acabaram ficando com inveja dele. 15 Por isso eles entupiram com terra todos os poços que os empregados de Abraão, o pai de Isaque, haviam cavado no tempo em que Abraão ainda estava vivo. 16 Até que um dia Abimeleque disse a Isaque:

— Vá embora da nossa terra. Você ficou muito mais poderoso do que nós.

17 Isaque saiu dali, armou as suas barracas no vale de Gerar e ficou morando ali por algum tempo. 18 Ele tornou a abrir os poços que haviam sido cavados no tempo de Abraão e que os filisteus haviam tapado depois da sua morte. E Isaque pôs nos poços os mesmos nomes que o seu pai havia posto.

19 Um dia os empregados de Isaque estavam no vale abrindo um poço e acharam uma mina de água. 20 Os pastores de Gerar discutiram com os pastores de Isaque, afirmando que a água era deles. Por isso Isaque deu a esse poço o nome de "Discussão".

21 Depois os empregados de Isaque abriram outro poço e por causa dele também houve discussão. Então Isaque pôs nele o nome de "Inimizade".

22 Isaque saiu dali e abriu outro poço. E, como não houve discussão por causa desse, ele o chamou de "Lugar Espaçoso". Ele disse:

— Agora o Senhor Deus nos deu um lugar espaçoso para viver nesta terra, e aqui vamos ficar à vontade.

23 Dali Isaque foi para Berseba. 24 Naquela noite o Senhor apareceu a ele e disse:

— Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, o seu pai. Não tenha medo, pois eu estou com você. Por causa do meu servo Abraão, eu abençoarei você e farei com que os seus descendentes sejam muitos.

25 Isaque construiu um altar ali e adorou a Deus, o Senhor. Ele armou as suas barracas naquele lugar, e ali os seus empregados cavaram outro poço.

26 Certo dia Abimeleque saiu de Gerar e foi conversar com Isaque. Com ele foram o seu amigo Auzate e Ficol, o comandante do seu exército. 27 Isaque perguntou:

— Por que é que vocês vieram falar comigo, se têm ódio de mim e até me expulsaram da sua terra?

28 Eles responderam:

— Agora nós sabemos que o Senhor Deus está com você e pensamos que deveríamos fazer um trato com você, selado com juramento. O trato é este: 29 Você não nos fará nenhum mal, assim como nós não fizemos nenhum mal a você. Nós fomos bondosos para você e deixamos que fosse embora em paz. Agora está claro que o Senhor o tem abençoado.

30 Então Isaque preparou um banquete, e todos eles comeram e beberam. 31 No dia seguinte eles se levantaram bem cedo e fizeram o trato, e cada um fez o seu juramento. Isaque se despediu deles, e eles foram embora como seus amigos.

32 Nesse mesmo dia os empregados de Isaque foram dar-lhe a notícia de que haviam encontrado água no poço que estavam cavando. 33 Isaque pôs nesse poço o nome de Seba, e por isso até hoje o nome daquela cidade é Berseba .

34 Quando tinha quarenta anos, Esaú casou com Judite, filha de Beeri, e com Basemate, filha de Elom, duas moças heteias. 35 Essas duas mulheres amarguraram a vida de Isaque e de Rebeca.
