1 So Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, "My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; they are now in the land of Goshen."2 And from among his brothers he took five men and presented them to Pharaoh.3 Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What is your occupation?" And they said to Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds, as our fathers were."4 They said to Pharaoh, "We have come to sojourn in the land; for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan; and now, we pray you, let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen."5 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Your father and your brothers have come to you.6 The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land; let them dwell in the land of Goshen; and if you know any able men among them, put them in charge of my cattle."7 Then Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many are the days of the years of your life?"9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my sojourning are a hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojourning."10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh.11 Then Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Ram'eses, as Pharaoh had commanded.12 And Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with food, according to the number of their dependents.13 Now there was no food in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished by reason of the famine.14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.15 And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, "Give us food; why should we die before your eyes? For our money is gone."16 And Joseph answered, "Give your cattle, and I will give you food in exchange for your cattle, if your money is gone."17 So they brought their cattle to Joseph; and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the herds, and the asses: and he supplied them with food in exchange for all their cattle that year.18 And when that year was ended, they came to him the following year, and said to him, "We will not hide from my lord that our money is all spent; and the herds of cattle are my lord's; there is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands.19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we with our land will be slaves to Pharaoh; and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land may not be desolate."20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for all the Egyptians sold their fields, because the famine was severe upon them. The land became Pharaoh's;21 and as for the people, he made slaves of them from one end of Egypt to the other.22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy; for the priests had a fixed allowance from Pharaoh, and lived on the allowance which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.23 Then Joseph said to the people, "Behold, I have this day bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Now here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.24 And at the harvests you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and as food for yourselves and your households, and as food for your little ones."25 And they said, "You have saved our lives; may it please my lord, we will be slaves to Pharaoh."26 So Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt, and it stands to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh's.27 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they gained possessions in it, and were fruitful and multiplied exceedingly.28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred and forty-seven years.29 And when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, "If now I have found favor in your sight, put your hand under my thigh, and promise to deal loyally and truly with me. Do not bury me in Egypt,30 but let me lie with my fathers; carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burying place." He answered, "I will do as you have said."31 And he said, "Swear to me"; and he swore to him. Then Israel bowed himself upon the head of his bed.

1 Então José foi dar a notícia ao rei. Ele disse:

— O meu pai e os meus irmãos vieram da terra de Canaã e estão na região de Gosém com as suas ovelhas e cabras, o seu gado e tudo o que têm.

2 Depois levou cinco dos seus irmãos e os apresentou ao rei. 3 O rei perguntou:

— Qual é o trabalho de vocês?

Eles responderam:

— Senhor, nós somos criadores de ovelhas, como foram os nossos antepassados. 4 Viemos morar neste país porque na terra de Canaã não há pastos para os animais, e a fome lá está terrível. Por favor, deixe que a gente fique morando na região de Gosém.

5 O rei disse a José:

— Agora que o seu pai e os seus irmãos vieram ficar com você, 6 a terra do Egito está às ordens deles. Dê a eles a região de Gosém, que é a melhor do país, para que fiquem morando lá. E, se na sua opinião houver entre eles homens capazes, ponha-os como chefes dos que cuidam do meu gado.

7 Depois José levou Jacó, o seu pai, e o apresentou ao rei. Jacó deu a sua bênção ao rei, 8 e este perguntou:

— Qual é a sua idade?

9 Jacó respondeu:

— Já estou com cento e trinta anos de idade e sempre tenho andado de um lado para outro. A minha vida tem passado rapidamente, e muitos anos foram difíceis. E eu não tenho conseguido viver tanto quanto os meus antepassados, que tiveram uma vida tão dura como a que eu tive.

10 Jacó deu a sua bênção ao rei e foi embora. 11 E José deu ao pai e aos irmãos terras na melhor região do Egito, perto da cidade de Ramessés, como o rei havia ordenado. Essas terras se tornaram propriedade deles, e eles ficaram morando ali. 12 José dava mantimentos ao pai, aos irmãos e aos parentes, conforme as necessidades de cada família.

13 Não havia alimento em lugar nenhum, e a fome aumentava cada vez mais. Os moradores do Egito e de Canaã ficaram fracos de tanto passar fome. 14 O povo comprava mantimentos, e José ajuntava todo o dinheiro e o levava para o palácio. 15 Quando acabou todo o dinheiro do Egito e de Canaã, os egípcios foram falar com José. Eles disseram:

— Por favor, nos dê comida! Não nos deixe morrer só porque o nosso dinheiro acabou!

16 José respondeu:

— Se vocês não têm mais dinheiro, tragam o seu gado, que eu trocarei por mantimento.

17 Os egípcios levaram a José cavalos, ovelhas, cabras, bois e jumentos, e em troca ele lhes deu mantimento durante todo aquele ano. 18 O ano passou, e no ano seguinte foram dizer a José:

19 — Senhor, não podemos esconder o fato de que o nosso dinheiro acabou e que os nossos animais agora são seus. Não temos mais nada para entregar a não ser os nossos corpos e as nossas terras. Não deixe a gente morrer. Compre a nós e as nossas terras em troca de alimentos. Seremos escravos do rei, e ele será dono das nossas terras. Dê-nos mantimento para que possamos viver e também sementes para plantarmos, e assim a terra não se tornará um deserto.

20 Então José comprou todas as terras do Egito para o rei. Todos os egípcios tiveram de vender as suas terras, pois a fome era terrível. Assim, a terra ficou sendo do rei, 21 e José fez dos egípcios escravos no país inteiro. 22 José só não comprou as terras dos sacerdotes. Eles não tiveram de vendê-las, pois o rei lhes dava certa quantidade de alimentos; e assim eles tinham o que comer.

23 Então José disse ao povo:

— Agora vocês e as suas terras são do rei, pois eu os comprei para ele. Peguem aqui sementes para semearem nos campos. 24 Do que colherem, deem a quinta parte ao rei; usem as outras quatro partes para semear e para alimentar vocês, os seus filhos e as pessoas que moram com vocês.

25 Eles responderam:

— O senhor salvou a nossa vida e tem sido bom para nós. Seremos escravos do rei.

26 Assim, José fez uma lei que existe até hoje. A lei é a seguinte: em todo o Egito a quinta parte das colheitas pertence ao rei. Só as terras dos sacerdotes não ficaram para o rei.

27 Os israelitas ficaram vivendo no Egito, na região de Gosém, onde compraram terras e tiveram muitos filhos. 28 Jacó viveu dezessete anos no Egito, chegando à idade de cento e quarenta e sete anos. 29 Quando sentiu que ia morrer, Jacó mandou chamar o seu filho José e disse:

— Se lhe posso pedir um favor, ponha a mão por baixo da minha coxa e jure que será fiel e honesto comigo nisto que vou pedir: não me sepulte no Egito. 30 Quando eu morrer, tire o meu corpo do Egito e me coloque na sepultura dos meus antepassados, a fim de que eu descanse com eles.

José respondeu:

— Eu farei o que o senhor está pedindo.

31 — Então jure — disse Jacó.

José jurou, e aí Jacó se inclinou sobre a cabeceira da cama e orou.
