1 It happened at that time that Judah went down from his brothers, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.2 There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; he married her and went in to her,3 and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.4 Again she conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.5 Yet again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah. She was in Chezib when she bore him.6 And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar.7 But Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother."9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother's wife he spilled the semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.10 And what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD, and he slew him also.11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house, till Shelah my son grows up"--for he feared that he would die, like his brothers. So Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.12 In course of time the wife of Judah, Shua's daughter, died; and when Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.13 And when Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,"14 she put off her widow's garments, and put on a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage.15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot, for she had covered her face.16 He went over to her at the road side, and said, "Come, let me come in to you," for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"17 He answered, "I will send you a kid from the flock." And she said, "Will you give me a pledge, till you send it?"18 He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" She replied, "Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." So he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.19 Then she arose and went away, and taking off her veil she put on the garments of her widowhood.20 When Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand, he could not find her.21 And he asked the men of the place, "Where is the harlot who was at Enaim by the wayside?" And they said, "No harlot has been here."22 So he returned to Judah, and said, "I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, `No harlot has been here.'"23 And Judah replied, "Let her keep the things as her own, lest we be laughed at; you see, I sent this kid, and you could not find her."24 About three months later Judah was told, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; and moreover she is with child by harlotry." And Judah said, "Bring her out, and let her be burned."25 As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, "By the man to whom these belong, I am with child." And she said, "Mark, I pray you, whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff."26 Then Judah acknowledged them and said, "She is more righteous than I, inasmuch as I did not give her to my son Shelah." And he did not lie with her again.27 When the time of her delivery came, there were twins in her womb.28 And when she was in labor, one put out a hand; and the midwife took and bound on his hand a scarlet thread, saying, "This came out first."29 But as he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out; and she said, "What a breach you have made for yourself!" Therefore his name was called Perez.30 Afterward his brother came out with the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zerah.

1 Por esse tempo Judá se separou dos seus irmãos e foi morar na casa de um homem chamado Hira, que era da cidade de Adulã. 2 Ali Judá ficou conhecendo a filha de um cananeu chamado Sua. Judá casou com ela, 3 e ela lhe deu um filho, a quem ele chamou de Er. 4 Ela ficou grávida outra vez e teve outro filho, a quem ela deu o nome de Onã. 5 Depois ela teve mais um filho, em quem ela pôs o nome de Selá. Judá estava em Quezibe quando esse menino nasceu.

6 Judá casou Er, o seu filho mais velho, com uma mulher chamada Tamar. 7 O Senhor Deus não gostava da vida perversa que Er levava e por isso o matou. 8 Então Judá disse a Onã:

— Vá e tenha relações com a viúva do seu irmão. Assim, você cumprirá o seu dever de cunhado para que o seu irmão tenha descendentes por meio de você .

9 Ora, Onã sabia que o filho que nascesse não seria considerado como seu. Por isso, cada vez que tinha relações com a viúva do seu irmão, ele deixava que o esperma caísse no chão para que o seu irmão não tivesse descendentes por meio dele. 10 O Senhor ficou desgostoso com o que Onã estava fazendo e o matou também. 11 Então Judá disse a Tamar, a sua nora:

— Volte para a casa do seu pai e continue viúva até que o meu filho Selá fique adulto.

Ele disse isso porque tinha medo que Selá fosse morto, como havia acontecido com os seus irmãos. Assim, Tamar foi morar na casa do pai dela.

12 Passado algum tempo, a mulher de Judá morreu. Quando acabou o luto, Judá foi até Timnate, onde estavam cortando a lã das suas ovelhas. E o seu amigo Hira, de Adulã, foi com ele. 13 Alguém contou a Tamar que o seu sogro ia a Timnate a fim de cortar a lã das suas ovelhas. 14 Então ela trocou de roupa, deixando de lado as suas roupas de viúva, cobriu o rosto com um véu e se disfarçou. Em seguida foi e se sentou perto da entrada da cidade de Enaim, que fica no caminho para Timnate. Ela fez isso porque sabia muito bem que Selá já era homem feito, mas Judá não havia mandado que ele casasse com ela.

15 Quando Judá a viu, pensou que era uma prostituta, pois ela estava com o rosto coberto. 16 Ele foi falar com ela na beira do caminho, sem saber que era a sua nora. Ele disse:

— Você quer ir para a cama comigo?

Ela perguntou:

— Quanto é que você me paga?

17 Ele respondeu:

— Eu lhe mando um cabrito do meu rebanho.

— Está bem — disse ela. — Mas deixe alguma coisa comigo como garantia de que você vai mandar o cabrito.

18 Judá perguntou:

— O que você quer que eu deixe?

Ela respondeu:

— O seu sinete com o cordão e também o bastão que você tem na mão.

Então Judá entregou os objetos. Ele teve relações com ela, e ela ficou grávida. 19 Tamar voltou para casa, tirou o véu e vestiu as suas roupas de viúva.

20 Mais tarde Judá mandou o seu amigo Hira levar o cabrito e trazer de volta os objetos que havia deixado com ela, mas Hira não a encontrou. 21 Ele perguntou aos homens de Enaim se sabiam onde estava a prostituta que costumava ficar na beira da estrada.

— Aqui não esteve nenhuma prostituta — foi a resposta deles.

22 Hira voltou e disse a Judá:

— Não encontrei a mulher. E os homens do lugar disseram que ali nunca havia estado nenhuma prostituta.

23 Então Judá disse:

— Pois ela que fique com as minhas coisas. Assim, ninguém vai zombar de nós. Eu mandei o cabrito, mas você não encontrou a mulher.

24 Passados uns três meses, foram dizer a Judá:

— A sua nora agiu como prostituta e agora está grávida.

Aí Judá disse:

— Tragam essa mulher para fora a fim de ser queimada!

25 Quando a estavam tirando da sua casa, ela mandou dizer ao seu sogro: "Quem me engravidou foi o dono destas coisas. Examine e veja de quem são o sinete com o cordão e o bastão." 26 Judá reconheceu as coisas e disse:

— Ela tem mais razão do que eu; pois prometi casá-la com o meu filho Selá, mas não cumpri a promessa.

E nunca mais teve relações com ela.

27 Na hora de Tamar dar à luz, descobriram que ia ter gêmeos. 28 Quando ela estava no trabalho de parto, um dos gêmeos pôs uma das mãos para fora. A parteira pegou uma fita vermelha e amarrou na mão dele. E disse:

— Este saiu primeiro.

29 Mas ele puxou a mão, e o irmão gêmeo nasceu primeiro. Então a parteira disse:

— Como você abriu caminho!

E puseram nele o nome de Peres .

30 Depois nasceu o outro, o que estava com a fita vermelha amarrada na mão, e ele recebeu o nome de Zera .
