1 On that night the king could not sleep; and he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king.2 And it was found written how Mor'decai had told about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, and who had sought to lay hands upon King Ahasu-e'rus.3 And the king said, "What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mor'decai for this?" The king's servants who attended him said, "Nothing has been done for him."4 And the king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king's palace to speak to the king about having Mor'decai hanged on the gallows that he had prepared for him.5 So the king's servants told him, "Haman is there, standing in the court." And the king said, "Let him come in."6 So Haman came in, and the king said to him, "What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?" And Haman said to himself, "Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?"7 and Haman said to the king, "For the man whom the king delights to honor,8 let royal robes be brought, which the king has worn, and the horse which the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown is set;9 and let the robes and the horse be handed over to one of the king's most noble princes; let him array the man whom the king delights to honor, and let him conduct the man on horseback through the open square of the city, proclaiming before him: `Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.'"10 Then the king said to Haman, "Make haste, take the robes and the horse, as you have said, and do so to Mor'decai the Jew who sits at the king's gate. Leave out nothing that you have mentioned."11 So Haman took the robes and the horse, and he arrayed Mor'decai and made him ride through the open square of the city, proclaiming, "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor."12 Then Mor'decai returned to the king's gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered.13 And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had befallen him. Then his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mor'decai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of the Jewish people, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him."14 While they were yet talking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and brought Haman in haste to the banquet that Esther had prepared.

1 Naquela mesma noite, o rei não conseguiu pegar no sono; então mandou buscar o livro em que se escrevia o que acontecia no reino e ordenou que os seus funcionários lessem para ele. 2 A parte que leram contava como Mordecai tinha descoberto o plano para matar o rei, plano este preparado por Bigtã e Teres, os dois eunucos que eram guardas do palácio. 3 Aí o rei perguntou:

— Que homenagens foram prestadas e que prêmios foram dados a Mordecai por ter feito isso?

— Nada se fez a esse respeito! — responderam os funcionários.

4 Justamente nesse instante, Hamã entrou no pátio que ficava ao lado dos quartos do rei para lhe pedir que mandasse enforcar Mordecai na forca que ele, Hamã, havia mandado construir. O rei perguntou:

— Quem está no pátio?

5 — É Hamã! — responderam os servidores.

— Mandem que entre! — ordenou o rei.

6 Hamã entrou, e o rei lhe disse:

— Eu quero ter o prazer de prestar homenagens a um certo homem. Diga-me o que devo fazer por ele.

Hamã pensou assim: "Quem será esse homem a quem o rei tanto quer honrar? É claro que sou eu!" 7 E Hamã disse ao rei:

8 — Mande trazer as roupas que o senhor usa e também o cavalo que o senhor monta e mande colocar uma coroa real na cabeça do cavalo. 9 Então entregue as roupas e o cavalo a um dos mais altos funcionários do reino e ordene que ele vista as roupas no homem que o senhor deseja honrar. Depois, que ele leve o homem, montado a cavalo, pela praça principal da cidade e que diga em voz alta o seguinte: "É isto o que o rei faz pelo homem a quem ele quer honrar!"

10 Então o rei disse a Hamã:

— Vá depressa, e pegue as roupas e o cavalo, e faça com o judeu Mordecai tudo o que você acaba de dizer. Ele costuma ficar sentado na entrada do palácio. Não deixe de fazer nenhuma das coisas que você disse.

11 Hamã foi, pegou as roupas e o cavalo e vestiu as roupas em Mordecai. Depois levou Mordecai, montado a cavalo, pela praça principal da cidade e disse em voz alta: "É isto o que o rei faz pelo homem a quem ele quer honrar!"

12 Depois disso, Mordecai voltou para a entrada do palácio, enquanto que Hamã, envergonhado e triste, correu para casa, escondendo o rosto. 13 Contou à esposa e aos amigos tudo o que tinha acontecido com ele. Então ela e os seus amigos, que eram tão sabidos, disseram:

— Você já começou a perder a luta com Mordecai. Ele é judeu, e você não vai ganhar de jeito nenhum. Você vai perder na certa.

14 Eles ainda estavam falando quando os eunucos que estavam ao serviço do rei chegaram e levaram Hamã imediatamente ao banquete que Ester tinha preparado.
