1 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, to be throughout the whole kingdom;2 and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss.3 Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other presidents and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.4 Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom; but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him.5 Then these men said, "We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God."6 Then these presidents and satraps came by agreement to the king and said to him, "O King Darius, live for ever!7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the counselors and the governors are agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an interdict, that whoever makes petition to any god or man for thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.8 Now, O king, establish the interdict and sign the document, so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked."9 Therefore King Darius signed the document and interdict.10 When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem; and he got down upon his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.11 Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and supplication before his God.12 Then they came near and said before the king, concerning the interdict, "O king! Did you not sign an interdict, that any man who makes petition to any god or man within thirty days except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?" The king answered, "The thing stands fast, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked."13 Then they answered before the king, "That Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no heed to you, O king, or the interdict you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day."14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was much distressed, and set his mind to deliver Daniel; and he labored till the sun went down to rescue him.15 Then these men came by agreement to the king, and said to the king, "Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no interdict or ordinance which the king establishes can be changed."16 Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king said to Daniel, "May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!"17 And a stone was brought and laid upon the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords, that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.18 Then the king went to his palace, and spent the night fasting; no diversions were brought to him, and sleep fled from him.19 Then, at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions.20 When he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish and said to Daniel, "O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?"21 Then Daniel said to the king, "O king, live for ever!22 My God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no wrong."23 Then the king was exceedingly glad, and commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of hurt was found upon him, because he had trusted in his God.24 And the king commanded, and those men who had accused Daniel were brought and cast into the den of lions--they, their children, and their wives; and before they reached the bottom of the den the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces.25 Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: "Peace be multiplied to you.26 I make a decree, that in all my royal dominion men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel, for he is the living God, enduring for ever; his kingdom shall never be destroyed, and his dominion shall be to the end.27 He delivers and rescues, he works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth, he who has saved Daniel from the power of the lions."28 So this Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

1 O rei Dario resolveu dividir o país em cento e vinte províncias e escolher cento e vinte homens para governá-las. 2 A fim de que tudo corresse bem, e não houvesse prejuízo, o rei nomeou três ministros para controlarem os cento e vinte governadores. Um desses ministros era Daniel, 3 e ele mostrou logo que era mais competente do que os outros ministros e governadores. Ele tinha tanta capacidade, que o rei pensou em colocá-lo como a mais alta autoridade do reino. 4 Aí os outros ministros e os governadores procuraram achar um motivo para acusar Daniel de ser mau administrador, mas não encontraram. Daniel era honesto e direito, e ninguém podia acusá-lo de ter feito qualquer coisa errada. 5 Então eles disseram uns aos outros:

— Nunca encontraremos motivo para acusar Daniel, a não ser que seja alguma coisa que tenha a ver com a religião dele.

6 Então foram todos juntos falar com o rei e disseram:

— Que o rei Dario viva para sempre! 7 Todos nós que ocupamos posições de autoridade no reino, isto é, os ministros, os governadores, os prefeitos e as outras autoridades, nos reunimos e concordamos em pedir ao senhor que dê uma ordem que não poderá ser desobedecida. Ordene que durante trinta dias todos façam os seus pedidos somente ao senhor. Se durante esse tempo alguém fizer um pedido a qualquer deus ou a qualquer outro homem, essa pessoa será jogada na cova dos leões. 8 Portanto, ó rei, dê a ordem e a assine, a fim de que não possa ser anulada. De acordo com a lei dos medos e dos persas, essa ordem não poderá ser anulada.

9 O rei concordou; assinou a ordem e mandou que fosse publicada.

10 Quando Daniel soube que o rei tinha assinado a ordem, voltou para casa. No andar de cima havia um quarto com janelas que davam para Jerusalém. Daniel abriu as janelas, ajoelhou-se e orou, dando graças ao seu Deus. Ele costumava fazer isso três vezes por dia.

11 Os inimigos de Daniel foram juntos até a casa dele e o encontraram orando ao seu Deus. 12 Então foram procurar o rei a fim de falar com ele a respeito da ordem. Eles disseram:

— Ó rei, o senhor assinou uma ordem que proíbe que durante trinta dias se façam pedidos a qualquer deus ou a qualquer outro homem, a não ser ao senhor. E a ordem diz também que quem desobedecer será jogado na cova dos leões. Não é verdade?

O rei respondeu:

— É verdade, e a ordem deve ser obedecida. De acordo com a lei dos medos e dos persas, ela não pode ser anulada.

13 Aí eles disseram ao rei:

— Mas Daniel, um dos prisioneiros que vieram da terra de Judá, não respeita o senhor, nem se importa com a ordem, pois ora ao Deus dele três vezes por dia.

14 Ao ouvir isso, o rei ficou muito triste e resolveu salvar Daniel. Até o pôr do sol daquele dia, ele fez tudo o que pôde para salvá-lo. 15 Os inimigos de Daniel foram falar de novo com o rei e disseram:

— O senhor sabe muito bem que, de acordo com a lei dos medos e dos persas, nenhuma ordem ou lei assinada pelo rei pode ser anulada.

16 Então o rei mandou que trouxessem Daniel e o jogassem na cova dos leões. E o rei disse a Daniel:

— Espero que o seu Deus, a quem você serve com tanta dedicação, o salve.

17 Trouxeram uma pedra e com ela taparam a boca da cova. O rei selou a pedra com o seu próprio anel e com o anel das altas autoridades do reino, para que, mesmo no caso de Daniel, a lei fosse cumprida ao pé da letra. 18 O rei voltou para o palácio, mas não comeu nada, nem se divertiu como de costume. E naquela noite não pôde dormir.

19 De manhã, cedinho, ele se levantou e foi depressa até a cova dos leões. 20 Ali, com voz muito triste, ele disse:

— Daniel, servo do Deus vivo! Será que o seu Deus, a quem você serve com tanta dedicação, conseguiu salvá-lo dos leões?

21 Daniel respondeu:

— Que o rei viva para sempre! 22 O meu Deus mandou o seu Anjo, e este fechou a boca dos leões para que não me ferissem. Pois Deus sabe que não fiz nada contra ele. E também não cometi nenhum crime contra o senhor.

23 O rei, muito alegre, mandou que tirassem Daniel da cova. Assim ele foi tirado, e viram que nenhum mal havia acontecido com ele, pois havia confiado em Deus. 24 Em seguida, o rei mandou que trouxessem os homens que tinham acusado Daniel. Todos eles, junto com as suas mulheres e os seus filhos, foram jogados na cova. E, antes mesmo de chegarem ao fundo, os leões os atacaram e os despedaçaram.

25 Então o rei Dario escreveu uma carta para os povos de todas as nações, raças e línguas do mundo. A carta dizia o seguinte:

"Felicidade e paz para todos! 26 Eu ordeno que todas as pessoas do meu reino respeitem e honrem o Deus que Daniel adora.

Pois ele é o Deus vivo,

que vive para sempre.

O seu reino nunca será destruído;

o seu poder nunca terá fim.

27 Ele socorre e salva;

no céu e na terra, ele faz milagres e maravilhas.

Foi ele quem salvou Daniel,

livrando-o das garras dos leões."

28 E Daniel continuou a ser uma alta autoridade no governo durante o reinado de Dario e depois durante o reinado de Ciro, da Pérsia .
