1 King Belshaz'zar made a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and drank wine in front of the thousand.2 Belshaz'zar, when he tasted the wine, commanded that the vessels of gold and of silver which Nebuchadnez'zar his father had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them.3 Then they brought in the golden and silver vessels which had been taken out of the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them.4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.5 Immediately the fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace, opposite the lampstand; and the king saw the hand as it wrote.6 Then the king's color changed, and his thoughts alarmed him; his limbs gave way, and his knees knocked together.7 The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chalde'ans, and the astrologers. The king said to the wise men of Babylon, "Whoever reads this writing, and shows me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom."8 Then all the king's wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or make known to the king the interpretation.9 Then King Belshaz'zar was greatly alarmed, and his color changed; and his lords were perplexed.10 The queen, because of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banqueting hall; and the queen said, "O king, live for ever! Let not your thoughts alarm you or your color change.11 There is in your kingdom a man in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him, and King Nebuchadnez'zar, your father, made him chief of the magicians, enchanters, Chalde'ans, and astrologers,12 because an excellent spirit, knowledge, and understanding to interpret dreams, explain riddles, and solve problems were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshaz'zar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation."13 Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king said to Daniel, "You are that Daniel, one of the exiles of Judah, whom the king my father brought from Judah.14 I have heard of you that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you.15 Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me to read this writing and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the matter.16 But I have heard that you can give interpretations and solve problems. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.17 Then Daniel answered before the king, "Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing to the king and make known to him the interpretation.18 O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnez'zar your father kingship and greatness and glory and majesty;19 and because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him; whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down.20 But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him;21 he was driven from among men, and his mind was made like that of a beast, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; he was fed grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until he knew that the Most High God rules the kingdom of men, and sets over it whom he will.22 And you his son, Belshaz'zar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,23 but you have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and the vessels of his house have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know, but the God in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your ways, you have not honored.24 "Then from his presence the hand was sent, and this writing was inscribed.25 And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN.26 This is the interpretation of the matter: MENE, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end;27 TEKEL, you have been weighed in the balances and found wanting;28 PERES, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians."29 Then Belshaz'zar commanded, and Daniel was clothed with purple, a chain of gold was put about his neck, and proclamation was made concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.30 That very night Belshaz'zar the Chalde'an king was slain.31 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

1 Certa noite, o rei Belsazar, da Babilônia, deu um banquete, convidou mil autoridades do país e começou a beber vinho com os convidados. 2 Depois de beber bastante, mandou que trouxessem os copos de ouro e de prata que Nabucodonosor, o seu pai, havia tirado do Templo de Jerusalém. Belsazar queria os copos para que ele, os seus convidados de honra, as suas mulheres e as suas concubinas os usassem para beber vinho. 3 Trouxeram os copos de ouro e todos começaram a beber vinho neles 4 e a louvar os deuses de ouro, de prata, de bronze, de ferro, de madeira e de pedra.

5 De repente, apareceu a mão de um homem e ela começou a escrever na parede branca do salão do banquete, num lugar iluminado pela luz do candelabro. Ao ver a mão, o rei 6 não sabia o que pensar; ficou pálido de medo e começou a tremer da cabeça aos pés. 7 Depois, gritando, ordenou que chamassem os adivinhos, os sábios e os astrólogos. Logo que eles chegaram, Belsazar disse:

— Aquele que ler o que está escrito na parede e me explicar o que quer dizer será vestido com roupas de púrpura, receberá uma corrente de ouro para pôr no pescoço e será a terceira autoridade mais importante no meu reino.

8 Todos os sábios entraram no salão, mas nenhum deles pôde ler o que estava escrito na parede, nem explicar ao rei o que aquilo queria dizer. 9 O rei se assustou ainda mais, e o seu rosto ficou mais pálido ainda. E nenhuma das altas autoridades sabia o que fazer.

10 Então a rainha-mãe, que tinha ouvido os gritos do rei e dos seus convidados de honra, entrou no salão e disse ao rei:

— Que o rei viva para sempre! Não se assuste, nem fique pálido assim, 11 pois aqui no seu reino há um homem que tem o espírito dos santos deuses. Quando Nabucodonosor, o seu pai, era rei, esse homem provou que era ajuizado, inteligente e sábio, tão sábio como os deuses. E o rei Nabucodonosor pôs esse homem como chefe dos sábios, adivinhos, feiticeiros e astrólogos. 12 Pois Daniel, esse homem a quem o rei deu o nome de Beltessazar, pensa com muita clareza; ele é sábio e inteligente e pode interpretar sonhos, explicar coisas misteriosas e resolver assuntos difíceis. Portanto, chame Daniel, e ele explicará o que está escrito na parede.

13 Levaram Daniel até a presença do rei, e este perguntou:

— Você é mesmo aquele Daniel, um dos judeus que o meu pai, o rei Nabucodonosor, trouxe de Judá como prisioneiros? 14 Já me disseram que o espírito dos deuses está em você e que você pensa com muita clareza e é muito inteligente e sábio. 15 Há pouco, estiveram aqui os sábios e os astrólogos, que eu mandei chamar para que lessem as palavras que estão escritas na parede e me explicassem o que elas querem dizer. Porém eles não puderam dar nenhuma explicação. 16 Mas alguém me disse que você pode explicar mistérios e resolver assuntos difíceis. Portanto, se você puder ler o que está escrito e me explicar o que quer dizer, você será vestido com roupas de púrpura, receberá uma corrente de ouro para pôr no pescoço e será a terceira autoridade mais importante do meu reino.

17 Daniel respondeu:

— O senhor pode ficar com os seus presentes ou então dá-los a outra pessoa. Mesmo assim, eu vou ler as palavras que estão escritas na parede e vou explicar ao senhor o que elas querem dizer. 18 Ó rei, o Deus Altíssimo deu o reino ao seu pai, o rei Nabucodonosor, e lhe deu também poder, glória e majestade. 19 O poder que Deus lhe deu era tão grande, que todos os povos do mundo tremiam de medo na presença dele. Se ele queria, matava uma pessoa; ou, se queria, deixava que vivesse. Elevava uns e rebaixava outros. 20 Mas ele ficou tão vaidoso, tão teimoso e tão cheio de si, que foi derrubado do poder e perdeu toda a sua glória. 21 Foi expulso do meio dos seres humanos, perdeu o juízo e agia como um animal. Morava com jumentos selvagens, comia capim como os bois e dormia ao ar livre, ficando molhado pelo sereno. Isso durou até que ele reconheceu que o Deus Altíssimo domina todos os reinos do mundo e coloca como rei quem ele quer.

22 — E o senhor, ó rei Belsazar, filho de Nabucodonosor, sabia de tudo isso, mas mesmo assim não tem sido humilde. 23 Pelo contrário, o senhor desafiou o Rei do céu e mandou trazer os copos que foram tirados do Templo dele, a fim de que o senhor, os seus convidados de honra, as suas mulheres e as suas concubinas bebessem vinho neles. Além disso, o senhor deu louvores a deuses de prata, de ouro, de bronze, de ferro, de madeira e de pedra, que não veem, não ouvem e não sabem nada. Mas o senhor não deu glória a Deus, aquele que tem o poder de matar ou de deixar viver e que decide tudo o que acontece com o senhor. 24 É por isso que ele mandou essa mão escrever na parede estas palavras: 25 "Mene, Mene, Tequel e Parsim".

26 — E agora a explicação. Mene quer dizer que Deus contou o número dos dias do reinado do senhor e resolveu terminá-lo. 27 Tequel quer dizer que o senhor foi pesado na balança e pesou muito pouco. 28 Peres quer dizer que o seu reino será dividido e entregue aos medos e aos persas .

29 Aí o rei Belsazar mandou que vestissem Daniel com roupas de púrpura, pusessem uma corrente de ouro no seu pescoço e anunciassem que dali em diante ele seria a terceira autoridade mais importante do Reino da Babilônia.

30 Naquela mesma noite, Belsazar, o rei da Babilônia, foi morto, 31 e Dario, o rei do país da Média, que tinha sessenta e dois anos de idade, começou a reinar no seu lugar.
