1 In the first year of Belshaz'zar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream, and told the sum of the matter.2 Daniel said, "I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea.3 And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another.4 The first was like a lion and had eagles' wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand upon two feet like a man; and the mind of a man was given to it.5 And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side; it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, `Arise, devour much flesh.'6 After this I looked, and lo, another, like a leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back; and the beast had four heads; and dominion was given to it.7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrible and dreadful and exceedingly strong; and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.8 I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots; and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.9 As I looked, thrones were placed and one that was ancient of days took his seat; his raiment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, its wheels were burning fire.10 A stream of fire issued and came forth from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.11 I looked then because of the sound of the great words which the horn was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire.12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.13 I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.14 And to him was given dominion and glory and kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.15 "As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious and the visions of my head alarmed me.16 I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me, and made known to me the interpretation of the things.17 `These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth.18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, for ever and ever.'19 "Then I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrible, with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze; and which devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet;20 and concerning the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up and before which three of them fell, the horn which had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and which seemed greater than its fellows.21 As I looked, this horn made war with the saints, and prevailed over them,22 until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints received the kingdom.23 "Thus he said: `As for the fourth beast, there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be different from all the kingdoms, and it shall devour the whole earth, and trample it down, and break it to pieces.24 As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise, and another shall arise after them; he shall be different from the former ones, and shall put down three kings.25 He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand for a time, two times, and half a time.26 But the court shall sit in judgment, and his dominion shall be taken away, to be consumed and destroyed to the end.27 And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; their kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey them.'28 "Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly alarmed me, and my color changed; but I kept the matter in my mind."

1 Certa noite, durante o primeiro ano de Belsazar como rei da Babilônia, Daniel se deitou na sua cama e sonhou e no sonho teve visões. Quando acordou, ele escreveu aquilo que tinha sonhado. 2 Aqui está o que ele escreveu:

No sonho que tive naquela noite, eu vi os ventos soprando de todas as direções e agitando as águas do mar imenso . 3 De repente, saíram do mar quatro monstros enormes, diferentes uns dos outros. 4 O primeiro parecia um leão, mas tinha asas de águia. Enquanto eu olhava, as suas asas foram arrancadas, e ele foi posto de pé para que andasse como homem. E foi dada a ele uma mente humana.

5 O segundo monstro era parecido com um urso. Ele se levantou nas patas de trás e segurava três costelas na boca. E uma voz lhe dizia: "Vá e coma muita carne."

6 Depois, vi o terceiro monstro, e este era parecido com um leopardo. Ele tinha quatro cabeças e nas costas tinha quatro asas, como asas de ave. A este animal foi dada a autoridade para reinar.

7 O quarto monstro que vi naquela visão era terrível, espantoso e muito forte. Tinha enormes dentes de ferro e com eles despedaçava e devorava as suas vítimas; o que sobrava ele esmagava com as patas. Esse monstro era diferente dos outros três e tinha dez chifres. 8 Eu estava olhando os chifres com atenção e notei outro chifre, menor, que nasceu entre os outros. Três chifres foram arrancados para dar lugar a esse chifre menor, que tinha olhos, como os de gente, e uma boca que falava com muito orgulho.

9 Continuei olhando e vi que foram postos alguns tronos. Num deles, assentou-se aquele que sempre existiu. A sua roupa era branca como a neve, e os seus cabelos eram brancos como a lã. O trono e as suas rodas pareciam labaredas de fogo, 10 e de um lugar em frente do trono saía um rio de fogo. Havia ali milhares de pessoas que adoravam aquele que estava sentado no trono, e muitos milhões estavam de pé na presença dele. Começou o julgamento, e foram abertos os livros.

11 Continuei olhando, pois o chifre pequeno ainda estava dizendo palavras orgulhosas. E vi quando o quarto monstro foi morto; e o seu corpo foi despedaçado e jogado no fogo. 12 Quanto aos outros monstros, o poder que tinham foi tirado deles, mas não foram mortos; foi dado a eles mais um pouco de tempo para viverem.

13 Na mesma visão que tive naquela noite, vi um ser parecido com um homem, que vinha entre as nuvens do céu. Ele foi até o lugar onde estava aquele que sempre existiu e foi apresentado a ele. 14 Deram-lhe o poder, a honra e a autoridade de rei, a fim de que os povos de todas as nações, línguas e raças o servissem. O seu poder é eterno, e o seu reino não terá fim.

15 As visões me espantaram, e eu fiquei preocupado com o que tinha visto. 16 Cheguei perto de um dos que estavam ali e pedi que me explicasse o que eu tinha visto. Então ele explicou assim:

17 — Os quatro monstros enormes são quatro reis que vão dominar o mundo. 18 Mas o reino será dado ao povo do Deus Altíssimo, e esse povo reinará para sempre.

19 Eu quis saber também a explicação a respeito do quarto monstro, que era diferente dos outros três, que era terrível e tinha dentes de ferro e unhas de bronze, que despedaçava e devorava as suas vítimas e que esmagava com as patas aquilo que sobrava. 20 Pedi também que me explicasse os dez chifres que esse monstro tinha na cabeça e o outro chifre que havia crescido, derrubando três chifres; esse chifre, que parecia mais forte do que os outros, tinha olhos e uma boca que falava com muito orgulho. 21 Enquanto eu olhava, esse chifre começou a lutar contra o povo de Deus e estava vencendo, 22 até que chegou aquele que sempre existiu. Ele julgou a favor do povo do Deus Altíssimo, pois havia chegado o tempo de esse povo começar a reinar.

23 A explicação que recebi foi esta:

— O quarto monstro é um rei, e o reino dele será bem diferente dos outros. Ele conquistará o mundo inteiro, destruirá todas as nações e as deixará arrasadas. 24 Os dez chifres representam dez reis que governarão esse reino. Depois deles, aparecerá outro rei que será diferente dos primeiros; ele derrotará três reis. 25 Ele falará contra Deus e perseguirá o povo do Deus Altíssimo. Procurará mudar a Lei de Deus e os tempos das festas religiosas. O povo de Deus será dominado por ele durante três anos e meio. 26 Mas depois disso o tribunal o condenará, e assim ele perderá o seu reino, e o seu poder acabará para sempre. 27 Mas o reino, o poder e a glória serão dados ao povo do Deus Altíssimo, e eles governarão o mundo inteiro para sempre; todos os outros povos os servirão, todos lhes obedecerão.

28 Aqui termina a explicação. Eu continuei muito preocupado com os meus pensamentos, e o meu rosto ficou pálido. Mas eu não disse nada a ninguém.
