1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah Hoshe'a the son of Elah began to reign in Sama'ria over Israel, and he reigned nine years.2 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, yet not as the kings of Israel who were before him.3 Against him came up Shalmane'ser king of Assyria; and Hoshe'a became his vassal, and paid him tribute.4 But the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshe'a; for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year; therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.5 Then the king of Assyria invaded all the land and came to Sama'ria, and for three years he besieged it.6 In the ninth year of Hoshe'a the king of Assyria captured Sama'ria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria, and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.7 And this was so, because the people of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods8 and walked in the customs of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel, and in the customs which the kings of Israel had introduced.9 And the people of Israel did secretly against the LORD their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places at all their towns, from watchtower to fortified city;10 they set up for themselves pillars and Ashe'rim on every high hill and under every green tree;11 and there they burned incense on all the high places, as the nations did whom the LORD carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the LORD to anger,12 and they served idols, of which the LORD had said to them, "You shall not do this."13 Yet the LORD warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer, saying, "Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets."14 But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the LORD their God.15 They despised his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and the warnings which he gave them. They went after false idols, and became false, and they followed the nations that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had commanded them that they should not do like them.16 And they forsook all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made for themselves molten images of two calves; and they made an Ashe'rah, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Ba'al.17 And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings, and used divination and sorcery, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger.18 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight; none was left but the tribe of Judah only.19 Judah also did not keep the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the customs which Israel had introduced.20 And the LORD rejected all the descendants of Israel, and afflicted them, and gave them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.21 When he had torn Israel from the house of David they made Jerobo'am the son of Nebat king. And Jerobo'am drove Israel from following the LORD and made them commit great sin.22 The people of Israel walked in all the sins which Jerobo'am did; they did not depart from them,23 until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had spoken by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was exiled from their own land to Assyria until this day.24 And the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sephar-va'im, and placed them in the cities of Sama'ria instead of the people of Israel; and they took possession of Sama'ria, and dwelt in its cities.25 And at the beginning of their dwelling there, they did not fear the LORD; therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which killed some of them.26 So the king of Assyria was told, "The nations which you have carried away and placed in the cities of Sama'ria do not know the law of the god of the land; therefore he has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them, because they do not know the law of the god of the land."27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, "Send there one of the priests whom you carried away thence; and let him go and dwell there, and teach them the law of the god of the land."28 So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Sama'ria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.29 But every nation still made gods of its own, and put them in the shrines of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities in which they dwelt;30 the men of Babylon made Suc'coth-be'noth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashi'ma,31 and the Av'vites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sephar'vites burned their children in the fire to Adram'melech and Anam'melech, the gods of Sephar-va'im.32 They also feared the LORD, and appointed from among themselves all sorts of people as priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places.33 So they feared the LORD but also served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away.34 To this day they do according to the former manner. They do not fear the LORD, and they do not follow the statutes or the ordinances or the law or the commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel.35 The LORD made a covenant with them, and commanded them, "You shall not fear other gods or bow yourselves to them or serve them or sacrifice to them;36 but you shall fear the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm; you shall bow yourselves to him, and to him you shall sacrifice.37 And the statutes and the ordinances and the law and the commandment which he wrote for you, you shall always be careful to do. You shall not fear other gods,38 and you shall not forget the covenant that I have made with you. You shall not fear other gods,39 but you shall fear the LORD your God, and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies."40 However they would not listen, but they did according to their former manner.41 So these nations feared the LORD, and also served their graven images; their children likewise, and their children's children--as their fathers did, so they do to this day.

1 No ano doze do reinado de Acaz, de Judá, Oseias, filho de Elá, se tornou rei de Israel e governou nove anos em Samaria. 2 Ele fez coisas erradas, que não agradam a Deus, o Senhor, porém não tanto quanto os reis que governaram Israel antes dele. 3 O rei Salmaneser, da Assíria, fez guerra contra ele; Oseias foi dominado por Salmaneser e lhe pagava um imposto todos os anos. 4 Mas certo ano Oseias mandou alguns mensageiros a Sô, rei do Egito, pedindo a sua ajuda, e parou de pagar o imposto anual à Assíria. Quando Salmaneser soube dessa revolta, mandou prender Oseias e colocá-lo na prisão.

5 Então Salmaneser invadiu Israel e cercou a cidade de Samaria. No terceiro ano do cerco, 6 que era o nono ano do reinado de Oseias, o rei da Assíria conquistou a cidade de Samaria e levou os israelitas para a Assíria como prisioneiros. Ele mandou que alguns fossem morar na cidade de Hala, outros, perto do rio Habor, que fica no distrito de Gozã, e ainda outros, nas cidades da Média.

7 A cidade de Samaria foi conquistada porque os israelitas pecaram contra o Senhor, seu Deus, que os havia livrado de Faraó, rei do Egito, e os havia tirado para fora daquele país. Eles adoraram outros deuses, 8 seguiram os costumes dos povos que o Senhor havia expulsado conforme eles avançavam e seguiram também os costumes adotados pelos reis de Israel. 9 Os israelitas fizeram coisas que o Senhor, seu Deus, não aprova. Eles construíram lugares pagãos de adoração em todas as suas cidades, desde o menor povoado até a maior cidade. 10 Em todos os morros e debaixo de todas as árvores que dão sombra, eles levantaram colunas do deus Baal e postes da deusa Aserá. 11 E também queimaram incenso em todos os altares pagãos, seguindo o costume dos povos que o Senhor havia expulsado da Terra Prometida. Eles provocaram a ira de Deus, o Senhor, com todas as coisas más que fizeram; 12 e adoraram ídolos, coisa que o Senhor havia proibido.

13 O Senhor Deus havia mandado mensageiros e profetas darem o seguinte aviso a Israel e a Judá: "Abandonem os seus maus caminhos e obedeçam aos meus mandamentos, que estão na Lei que eu dei aos seus antepassados e que entreguei a vocês por meio dos meus servos, os profetas." 14 Mas os israelitas do Reino do Norte não quiseram obedecer; foram teimosos como os seus antepassados, que não confiaram no Senhor, o Deus deles. 15 Eles não quiseram obedecer aos seus ensinamentos e não guardaram a aliança que ele tinha feito com os seus antepassados e desprezaram os avisos dele. Adoraram ídolos sem valor e desse modo eles mesmos ficaram sem valor. Seguiram os costumes das nações vizinhas, desobedecendo à ordem que o Senhor tinha dado para que não as imitassem. 16 Eles desobedeceram a todas as leis do Senhor, seu Deus, e fizeram dois touros de metal para adorar. Também fizeram um poste da deusa Aserá, adoraram as estrelas e serviram o deus Baal. 17 Queimaram os seus filhos e filhas como sacrifício a deuses pagãos, consultaram médiuns e adivinhos e só fizeram coisas erradas, que o Senhor não aprova, e por isso ele ficou irado com eles. 18 O Senhor ficou tão irado, que os expulsou da sua presença, deixando somente o Reino de Judá.

19 Mas mesmo o povo de Judá não obedeceu às leis do Senhor, seu Deus; eles imitaram os costumes adotados pelo povo de Israel. 20 Por isso, o Senhor rejeitou todos os descendentes de Israel; ele os castigou, entregando-os a inimigos cruéis, e no fim os expulsou da sua presença.

21 Depois que o Senhor Deus separou Israel de Judá, os israelitas colocaram Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, como seu rei. Jeroboão os fez abandonar o Senhor e os levou a cometer um terrível pecado. 22 Os israelitas seguiram Jeroboão e continuaram a praticar todos os pecados que ele havia cometido, 23 até que finalmente o Senhor os expulsou da sua presença, como havia avisado por meio dos seus servos, os profetas. E assim o povo de Israel foi levado para o cativeiro na Assíria, onde eles moram até hoje.

24 O rei da Assíria trouxe gente das cidades de Babilônia, Cutá, Iva, Hamate e Sefarvaim e os fez morar nas cidades de Samaria , em lugar dos israelitas que haviam sido levados como prisioneiros. Esses assírios tomaram posse daquelas cidades e ficaram morando ali. 25 Quando foram morar lá, eles não adoravam a Deus, o Senhor, e por isso ele mandou leões, que mataram alguns deles. 26 O rei da Assíria ficou sabendo que as pessoas que ele havia mandado morar nas cidades de Samaria não conheciam a lei do deus daquela terra, e por isso esse deus havia mandado leões, que estavam matando aquelas pessoas. 27 Então o rei deu a seguinte ordem: "Mandem de volta um dos sacerdotes que nós trouxemos como prisioneiros. Façam com que ele volte e fique morando lá, para ensinar ao povo a lei do deus daquela terra."

28 Então um sacerdote israelita que havia sido levado da cidade de Samaria foi e ficou morando em Betel, onde ensinava ao povo como adorar a Deus, o Senhor.

29 Mas o povo que ficou morando no território de Samaria continuou a fazer os seus próprios ídolos e os colocou nos santuários que os samaritanos haviam construído. Cada povo, nas cidades onde estava morando, fez os seus próprios ídolos: 30 isto é, o povo de Babilônia fez imagens do deus Sucote-Benote; o povo de Cutá, imagens de Nergal; o povo de Hamate, imagens de Asima; 31 o povo de Iva, imagens de Nibaz e Tartaque; e o povo de Sefarvaim queimava os seus filhos em sacrifício aos seus deuses Adrameleque e Anameleque. 32 Esses povos também adoravam a Deus, o Senhor, mas ao mesmo tempo escolhiam no meio deles todos os tipos de pessoas para servirem como sacerdotes nos lugares pagãos de adoração e para oferecerem sacrifícios por eles naqueles lugares. 33 E assim eles adoravam o Senhor, mas também adoravam os seus próprios deuses, de acordo com os costumes dos países de onde tinham vindo.

34 Até hoje eles continuam com os seus antigos costumes. Eles não adoram a Deus, o Senhor, nem obedecem às leis e aos mandamentos que ele deu aos descendentes de Jacó, a quem tinha dado o nome de Israel.

35 O Senhor havia feito uma aliança com eles e havia ordenado o seguinte: "Não adorem outros deuses; não se ajoelhem diante deles, não os sirvam, nem ofereçam sacrifícios a eles. 36 Obedeçam a mim, o Senhor, que tirei vocês do Egito com grande poder e força; ajoelhem-se diante de mim e ofereçam sacrifícios a mim. 37 Obedeçam sempre às leis e aos mandamentos que escrevi para vocês. Não adorem outros deuses, 38 nem esqueçam a aliança que fiz com vocês. 39 Adorem a mim, o Senhor, o Deus de vocês, e eu os livrarei de todos os seus inimigos."

40 Mas esses povos não atenderam e continuaram a seguir os seus velhos costumes. 41 E assim eles adoravam a Deus, o Senhor, mas também adoravam os seus ídolos; e até hoje os seus descendentes continuam a fazer a mesma coisa.
