1 Then the king sent, and all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem were gathered to him.2 And the king went up to the house of the LORD, and with him all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests and the prophets, all the people, both small and great; and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of the LORD.3 And the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book; and all the people joined in the covenant.4 And the king commanded Hilki'ah, the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the threshold, to bring out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels made for Ba'al, for Ashe'rah, and for all the host of heaven; he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron, and carried their ashes to Bethel.5 And he deposed the idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places at the cities of Judah and round about Jerusalem; those also who burned incense to Ba'al, to the sun, and the moon, and the constellations, and all the host of the heavens.6 And he brought out the Ashe'rah from the house of the LORD, outside Jerusalem, to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and beat it to dust and cast the dust of it upon the graves of the common people.7 And he broke down the houses of the male cult prostitutes which were in the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the Ashe'rah.8 And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beer-sheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates that were at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on one's left at the gate of the city.9 However, the priests of the high places did not come up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they ate unleavened bread among their brethren.10 And he defiled To'pheth, which is in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, that no one might burn his son or his daughter as an offering to Molech.11 And he removed the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun, at the entrance to the house of the LORD, by the chamber of Nathan-melech the chamberlain, which was in the precincts; and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire.12 And the altars on the roof of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manas'seh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD, he pulled down and broke in pieces, and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron.13 And the king defiled the high places that were east of Jerusalem, to the south of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ash'toreth the abomination of the Sido'nians, and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.14 And he broke in pieces the pillars, and cut down the Ashe'rim, and filled their places with the bones of men.15 Moreover the altar at Bethel, the high place erected by Jerobo'am the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, that altar with the high place he pulled down and he broke in pieces its stones, crushing them to dust; also he burned the Ashe'rah.16 And as Josi'ah turned, he saw the tombs there on the mount; and he sent and took the bones out of the tombs, and burned them upon the altar, and defiled it, according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who had predicted these things.17 Then he said, "What is yonder monument that I see?" And the men of the city told him, "It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and predicted these things which you have done against the altar at Bethel."18 And he said, "Let him be; let no man move his bones." So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet who came out of Sama'ria.19 And all the shrines also of the high places that were in the cities of Sama'ria, which kings of Israel had made, provoking the LORD to anger, Josi'ah removed; he did to them according to all that he had done at Bethel.20 And he slew all the priests of the high places who were there, upon the altars, and burned the bones of men upon them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.21 And the king commanded all the people, "Keep the passover to the LORD your God, as it is written in this book of the covenant."22 For no such passover had been kept since the days of the judges who judged Israel, or during all the days of the kings of Israel or of the kings of Judah;23 but in the eighteenth year of King Josi'ah this passover was kept to the LORD in Jerusalem.24 Moreover Josi'ah put away the mediums and the wizards and the teraphim and the idols and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might establish the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilki'ah the priest found in the house of the LORD.25 Before him there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; nor did any like him arise after him.26 Still the LORD did not turn from the fierceness of his great wrath, by which his anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manas'seh had provoked him.27 And the LORD said, "I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and I will cast off this city which I have chosen, Jerusalem, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there."28 Now the rest of the acts of Josi'ah, and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?29 In his days Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria to the river Euphra'tes. King Josi'ah went to meet him; and Pharaoh Neco slew him at Megid'do, when he saw him.30 And his servants carried him dead in a chariot from Megid'do, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jeho'ahaz the son of Josi'ah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father's stead.31 Jeho'ahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Hamu'tal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.32 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.33 And Pharaoh Neco put him in bonds at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem, and laid upon the land a tribute of a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.34 And Pharaoh Neco made Eli'akim the son of Josi'ah king in the place of Josi'ah his father, and changed his name to Jehoi'akim. But he took Jeho'ahaz away; and he came to Egypt, and died there.35 And Jehoi'akim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh, but he taxed the land to give the money according to the command of Pharaoh. He exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, from every one according to his assessment, to give it to Pharaoh Neco.36 Jehoi'akim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zebi'dah the daughter of Pedai'ah of Rumah.37 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.

1 O rei Josias ordenou que todos os líderes de Judá e de Jerusalém se reunissem com ele, 2 e eles foram todos juntos até o Templo, acompanhados pelos sacerdotes, pelos profetas e por todo o resto do povo, tanto os mais importantes como os mais humildes. Então o rei leu diante deles todo o Livro da Aliança que havia sido achado no Templo. 3 Ele ficou perto da coluna real, em pé, e fez com Deus, o Senhor, uma aliança pela qual eles lhe obedeceriam e guardariam as suas leis e mandamentos com todo o coração e com toda a alma. E também cumpririam tudo o que a aliança mandava fazer, como estava escrito no livro. E todo o povo prometeu cumprir a aliança.

4 Então Josias ordenou a Hilquias, o Grande Sacerdote, aos sacerdotes-ajudantes e aos guardas que estavam de serviço na entrada do Templo que tirassem para fora do Templo todos os objetos usados na adoração do deus Baal, da deusa Aserá e das estrelas. O rei queimou todos esses objetos fora da cidade, perto do vale do Cedrom, e mandou que levassem as cinzas para Betel. 5 Retirou do serviço os sacerdotes pagãos que os reis de Judá haviam nomeado para oferecer sacrifícios sobre os altares dedicados aos ídolos, nas cidades de Judá e nos lugares de perto de Jerusalém. Também retirou todos os sacerdotes que ofereciam sacrifícios ao deus Baal, ao sol, à lua, aos planetas e às estrelas. 6 Ele retirou do Templo o poste da deusa Aserá e o levou para fora da cidade, para o vale do Cedrom. Ali ele o queimou e fez virar cinza, que espalhou no cemitério público. 7 Ele destruiu os quartos do Templo onde ficavam os prostitutos . Era nesse lugar que as mulheres teciam as roupas usadas na adoração da deusa Aserá. 8 O rei Josias levou para Jerusalém os sacerdotes que estavam nas cidades de Judá e, por todo o país, desde Geba até Berseba, ele profanou os altares onde esses sacerdotes haviam oferecido sacrifícios. O rei também derrubou os altares dedicados aos demônios do deserto. Esses altares ficavam perto do portão construído por Josué, o governador da cidade. O portão ficava à esquerda de quem entrava na cidade pelo portão principal. 9 Esses sacerdotes estavam proibidos de oferecer sacrifícios no Templo de Deus, o Senhor, mas podiam comer os pães sem fermento junto com os outros sacerdotes.

10 O rei Josias também profanou Tofete, o lugar pagão de adoração que ficava no vale do Hinom, para que ninguém queimasse o seu filho ou filha como sacrifício ao deus Moloque. 11 Ele também retirou os cavalos que os reis de Judá haviam dedicado à adoração do sol e queimou os carros usados nessa adoração. Esses carros ficavam guardados no pátio do Templo, perto do portão e perto do quarto de Natã-Meleque, um alto funcionário. 12 O rei Josias derrubou os altares que os reis de Judá haviam construído no terraço do palácio, sobre a sala do rei Acaz, e também destruiu os altares construídos pelo rei Manassés nos dois pátios do Templo. Ele os fez em pedaços e jogou no vale do Cedrom. 13 Josias profanou também os altares que o rei Salomão havia construído a leste de Jerusalém, ao sul do monte das Oliveiras , para a adoração de Astarote, a nojenta deusa dos sidônios, para a adoração de Quemos, o nojento deus dos moabitas, e para a adoração de Moloque, o nojento deus dos amonitas. 14 O rei Josias fez em pedaços as colunas do deus Baal, derrubou os postes da deusa Aserá e cobriu de ossos de gente o lugar onde eles haviam estado.

15 Josias também derrubou o lugar de adoração que ficava em Betel e que havia sido construído pelo rei Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, que tinha feito o povo de Israel pecar. Josias derrubou o altar, quebrou as suas pedras em pedaços e as esmigalhou até virarem pó. Ele também queimou o poste da deusa Aserá. 16 Então Josias olhou em redor e viu algumas sepulturas ali no morro; mandou que tirassem delas os ossos e os queimou sobre o altar. Dessa maneira ele profanou o altar, fazendo aquilo que o profeta tinha dito que ia acontecer, isso há muito tempo, quando o rei Jeroboão estava perto do altar, durante uma festa. O rei Josias olhou em redor e viu a sepultura do profeta que havia feito aquela profecia. 17 Então perguntou:

— Que sepultura é esta?

O povo de Betel respondeu:

— É a sepultura do profeta que veio de Judá e profetizou as coisas que o senhor acabou de fazer com este altar.

18 — Deixem a sepultura como está! — ordenou Josias. — Não mexam nos ossos dele.

E assim os ossos daquele profeta ficaram junto com os ossos do profeta que tinha vindo de Samaria.

19 Em todas as cidades de Israel, Josias derrubou todos os lugares pagãos de adoração que haviam sido construídos pelos reis de Israel e que haviam provocado a ira do Senhor. Com todos esses altares ele fez aquilo que havia feito em Betel. 20 E também matou todos os sacerdotes pagãos sobre os altares onde eles haviam oferecido sacrifícios e queimou ossos de gente em todos os altares. Depois voltou para Jerusalém.

21 O rei Josias ordenou que todo o povo comemorasse a Festa da Páscoa em honra do Senhor, o Deus deles, conforme estava escrito no Livro da Aliança. 22 Desde a época em que os juízes governavam o país, nunca havia sido feita uma Festa da Páscoa como essa, por nenhum dos reis de Israel ou de Judá. 23 Foi no ano dezoito do reinado de Josias que essa Páscoa foi festejada em Jerusalém, em honra de Deus, o Senhor.

24 A fim de cumprir as leis escritas no livro que Hilquias, o Grande Sacerdote, havia achado no Templo, o rei Josias retirou de Jerusalém e do resto de Judá todos os médiuns e adivinhos e todos os deuses do lar, os ídolos e todos os outros objetos de adoração pagã. 25 Não houve antes nenhum rei como ele, que servisse a Deus, o Senhor, com todo o seu coração, mente e força, obedecendo a toda a Lei de Moisés; e depois nunca houve outro rei igual a ele.

26 Mas a ira terrível do Senhor havia sido provocada contra Judá por causa das coisas que o rei Manassés havia feito e essa ira ainda não havia passado. 27 O Senhor disse:

— Eu farei com Judá o mesmo que fiz com Israel: expulsarei da minha presença o povo de Judá e rejeitarei Jerusalém, a cidade que escolhi, e o Templo, o lugar onde eu disse que seria adorado.

28 Todas as outras coisas que o rei Josias fez estão escritas na História dos Reis de Judá. 29 Durante o reinado de Josias, Faraó Neco, rei do Egito, levou o seu exército até o rio Eufrates para ajudar o rei da Assíria. O rei Josias saiu para lutar contra o rei Neco, em Megido, e foi morto em batalha. 30 Os seus oficiais puseram o corpo dele num carro de guerra e o levaram de volta para Jerusalém, onde foi sepultado no seu túmulo.

O povo de Judá escolheu Joacaz, filho de Josias, e o ungiu como rei em lugar do seu pai.

31 Joacaz tinha vinte e três anos de idade quando se tornou rei de Judá. Ele governou três meses em Jerusalém. A mãe dele se chamava Hamutal e era filha de Jeremias, da cidade de Libna. 32 Seguindo o exemplo dos seus antepassados, Joacaz fez coisas erradas, que não agradam a Deus, o Senhor. 33 O seu reinado acabou quando o rei Neco mandou prendê-lo em Ribla, na terra de Hamate, e obrigou o povo de Judá a entregar três mil e quatrocentos quilos de prata e trinta e quatro quilos de ouro. 34 Faraó Neco pôs Eliaquim, filho de Josias, como rei de Judá, no lugar de Josias, o seu pai, e mudou o nome dele para Jeoaquim. Joacaz foi levado pelo rei Neco para o Egito e morreu ali.

35 O rei Jeoaquim cobrou do povo um imposto de acordo com as posses deles, a fim de juntar a prata e o ouro necessários para pagar o que o rei do Egito havia exigido.

36 Jeoaquim tinha vinte e cinco anos de idade quando se tornou rei de Judá. Ele governou onze anos em Jerusalém. A mãe dele se chamava Zebida e era filha de Pedaías, da cidade de Ruma. 37 Seguindo o exemplo dos seus antepassados, Jeoaquim fez coisas erradas, que não agradam a Deus, o Senhor.
