1 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him.2 And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."3 So he told them this parable:4 "What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it?5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, `Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.'7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.8 "Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?9 And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, `Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost.'10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents."11 And he said, "There was a man who had two sons;12 and the younger of them said to his father, `Father, give me the share of property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them.13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living.14 And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want.15 So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine.16 And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything.17 But when he came to himself he said, `How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger!18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you;19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants."'20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.21 And the son said to him, `Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'22 But the father said to his servants, `Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet;23 and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry;24 for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry.25 "Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.26 And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant.27 And he said to him, `Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.'28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,29 but he answered his father, `Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends.30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!'31 And he said to him, `Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.32 It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'"

1 Certa ocasião, muitos cobradores de impostos e outras pessoas de má fama chegaram perto de Jesus para o ouvir. 2 Os fariseus e os mestres da Lei criticavam Jesus, dizendo:

— Este homem se mistura com gente de má fama e toma refeições com eles.

3 Então Jesus contou esta parábola:

4 — Se algum de vocês tem cem ovelhas e perde uma, por acaso não vai procurá-la? Assim, deixa no campo as outras noventa e nove e vai procurar a ovelha perdida até achá-la. 5 Quando a encontra, fica muito contente e volta com ela nos ombros. 6 Chegando à sua casa, chama os amigos e vizinhos e diz: "Alegrem-se comigo porque achei a minha ovelha perdida."

7 — Pois eu lhes digo que assim também vai haver mais alegria no céu por um pecador que se arrepende dos seus pecados do que por noventa e nove pessoas boas que não precisam se arrepender.

8 Jesus continuou:

— Se uma mulher que tem dez moedas de prata perder uma, vai procurá-la, não é? Ela acende uma lamparina, varre a casa e procura com muito cuidado até achá-la. 9 E, quando a encontra, convida as amigas e vizinhas e diz: "Alegrem-se comigo porque achei a minha moeda perdida."

10 — Pois eu digo a vocês que assim também os anjos de Deus se alegrarão por causa de um pecador que se arrepende dos seus pecados.

11 E Jesus disse ainda:

— Um homem tinha dois filhos. 12 Certo dia o mais moço disse ao pai: "Pai, quero que o senhor me dê agora a minha parte da herança."

— E o pai repartiu os bens entre os dois. 13 Poucos dias depois, o filho mais moço ajuntou tudo o que era seu e partiu para um país que ficava muito longe. Ali viveu uma vida cheia de pecado e desperdiçou tudo o que tinha.

14 — O rapaz já havia gastado tudo, quando houve uma grande fome naquele país, e ele começou a passar necessidade. 15 Então procurou um dos moradores daquela terra e pediu ajuda. Este o mandou para a sua fazenda a fim de tratar dos porcos. 16 Ali, com fome, ele tinha vontade de comer o que os porcos comiam, mas ninguém lhe dava nada. 17 Caindo em si, ele pensou: "Quantos trabalhadores do meu pai têm comida de sobra, e eu estou aqui morrendo de fome! 18 Vou voltar para a casa do meu pai e dizer: ‘Pai, pequei contra Deus e contra o senhor 19 e não mereço mais ser chamado de seu filho. Me aceite como um dos seus trabalhadores.’ " 20 Então saiu dali e voltou para a casa do pai.

— Quando o rapaz ainda estava longe de casa, o pai o avistou. E, com muita pena do filho, correu, e o abraçou, e beijou. 21 E o filho disse: "Pai, pequei contra Deus e contra o senhor e não mereço mais ser chamado de seu filho!"

22 — Mas o pai ordenou aos empregados: "Depressa! Tragam a melhor roupa e vistam nele. Ponham um anel no dedo dele e sandálias nos seus pés. 23 Também tragam e matem o bezerro gordo. Vamos começar a festejar 24 porque este meu filho estava morto e viveu de novo; estava perdido e foi achado."

— E começaram a festa.

25 — Enquanto isso, o filho mais velho estava no campo. Quando ele voltou e chegou perto da casa, ouviu a música e o barulho da dança. 26 Então chamou um empregado e perguntou: "O que é que está acontecendo?"

27 — O empregado respondeu: "O seu irmão voltou para casa vivo e com saúde. Por isso o seu pai mandou matar o bezerro gordo."

28 — O filho mais velho ficou zangado e não quis entrar. Então o pai veio para fora e insistiu com ele para que entrasse. 29 Mas ele respondeu: "Faz tantos anos que trabalho como um escravo para o senhor e nunca desobedeci a uma ordem sua. Mesmo assim o senhor nunca me deu nem ao menos um cabrito para eu fazer uma festa com os meus amigos. 30 Porém esse seu filho desperdiçou tudo o que era do senhor, gastando dinheiro com prostitutas. E agora ele volta, e o senhor manda matar o bezerro gordo!"

31 — Então o pai respondeu: "Meu filho, você está sempre comigo, e tudo o que é meu é seu. 32 Mas era preciso fazer esta festa para mostrar a nossa alegria. Pois este seu irmão estava morto e viveu de novo; estava perdido e foi achado."
