1 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manas'seh,2 and said to them, "You have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you;3 you have not forsaken your brethren these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the LORD your God.4 And now the LORD your God has given rest to your brethren, as he promised them; therefore turn and go to your home in the land where your possession lies, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan.5 Take good care to observe the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul."6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went to their homes.7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manas'seh Moses had given a possession in Bashan; but to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brethren in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them,8 he said to them, "Go back to your homes with much wealth, and with very many cattle, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing; divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren."9 So the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manas'seh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the LORD through Moses.10 And when they came to the region about the Jordan, that lies in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manas'seh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of great size.11 And the people of Israel heard say, "Behold, the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manas'seh have built an altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel."12 And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh, to make war against them.13 Then the people of Israel sent to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manas'seh, in the land of Gilead, Phin'ehas the son of Elea'zar the priest,14 and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel.15 And they came to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manas'seh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them,16 "Thus says the whole congregation of the LORD, `What is this treachery which you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day from following the LORD, by building yourselves an altar this day in rebellion against the LORD?17 Have we not had enough of the sin at Pe'or from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the LORD,18 that you must turn away this day from following the LORD? And if you rebel against the LORD today he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel tomorrow.19 But now, if your land is unclean, pass over into the LORD's land where the LORD's tabernacle stands, and take for yourselves a possession among us; only do not rebel against the LORD, or make us as rebels by building yourselves an altar other than the altar of the LORD our God.20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the devoted things, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish alone for his iniquity.'"21 Then the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manas'seh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel,22 "The Mighty One, God, the LORD! The Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith toward the LORD, spare us not today23 for building an altar to turn away from following the LORD; or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or cereal offerings or peace offerings on it, may the LORD himself take vengeance.24 Nay, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, `What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?25 For the LORD has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you Reubenites and Gadites; you have no portion in the LORD.' So your children might make our children cease to worship the LORD.26 Therefore we said, `Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice,27 but to be a witness between us and you, and between the generations after us, that we do perform the service of the LORD in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings; lest your children say to our children in time to come, "You have no portion in the LORD."'28 And we thought, If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, `Behold the copy of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.'29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn away this day from following the LORD by building an altar for burnt offering, cereal offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the LORD our God that stands before his tabernacle!"30 When Phin'ehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the Reubenites and the Gadites and the Manas'sites spoke, it pleased them well.31 And Phin'ehas the son of Elea'zar the priest said to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the Manas'sites, "Today we know that the LORD is in the midst of us, because you have not committed this treachery against the LORD; now you have saved the people of Israel from the hand of the LORD."32 Then Phin'ehas the son of Elea'zar the priest, and the chiefs, returned from the Reubenites and the Gadites in the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back word to them.33 And the report pleased the people of Israel; and the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them, to destroy the land where the Reubenites and the Gadites were settled.34 The Reubenites and the Gadites called the altar Witness; "For," said they, "it is a witness between us that the LORD is God."

1 Então Josué reuniu o povo das tribos de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés do Leste 2 e disse:

— Vocês têm feito tudo o que Moisés, servo do Senhor, mandou e têm obedecido a todas as minhas ordens também. 3 Durante todo esse tempo, até hoje, vocês não abandonaram os seus irmãos israelitas. Vocês têm obedecido com cuidado aos mandamentos do Senhor. 4 Agora o Senhor, o Deus de vocês, deu aos seus irmãos israelitas a paz, como havia prometido. Voltem, pois, para a terra que vocês conquistaram do outro lado do rio Jordão, a terra que Moisés, servo do Senhor, lhes deu. 5 Obedeçam com muito cuidado ao mandamento e à lei que Moisés, servo do Senhor, lhes deu. Amem o Senhor, o Deus de vocês, façam a vontade dele, obedeçam aos seus mandamentos, fiquem ligados com ele e o sirvam com todo o coração e com toda a alma.

6 Aí Josué os abençoou e se despediu deles. E eles voltaram para casa.

7 Moisés tinha dado terras a leste do rio Jordão, em Basã, a uma das metades da tribo de Manassés. Mas para a outra metade Josué tinha dado terras a oeste do rio, junto com as outras tribos. Quando Josué se despediu deles, abençoou-os 8 e disse:

— Vocês estão voltando para casa muito ricos, com muito gado, prata, ouro, bronze, ferro e grande quantidade de roupas. Repartam com os seus irmãos israelitas aquilo que vocês tomaram dos inimigos.

9 Então o povo das tribos de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés do Leste voltou para casa. Eles deixaram os outros israelitas em Siló, na terra de Canaã, e foram para Gileade, a terra deles, que haviam conquistado conforme o Senhor tinha ordenado por meio de Moisés.

10 Quando chegaram a Gelilote, do lado oeste do rio Jordão, as duas tribos e meia construíram ali um altar grande, que podia ser visto de longe.

11 Os israelitas das outras tribos ouviram falar disso e comentavam:

— Escutem! O povo das tribos de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés do Leste construiu um altar em Gelilote, do nosso lado do rio Jordão!

12 Quando o povo de Israel ouviu isso, todos se reuniram em Siló para fazer guerra contra eles.

13 Então o povo de Israel enviou Fineias, filho do sacerdote Eleazar, à terra de Gileade, para falar com o povo das tribos de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés do Leste. 14 Junto com Fineias foram dez líderes, um de cada uma das tribos de Israel. 15 Eles foram até a terra de Gileade para falar com o povo de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés do Leste. Eles disseram:

16 — Todo o povo de Deus reunido mandou dizer isto: "Por que vocês fizeram essa traição contra o Deus de Israel? Por que se revoltaram contra o Senhor, construindo vocês mesmos esse altar? Será que não estão mais seguindo o Senhor? 17 Vocês não lembram do pecado cometido em Peor, quando o Senhor castigou o seu povo? Nós ainda estamos sofrendo por causa disso. Será que aquele pecado não bastava? 18 Será que agora vão deixar de seguir o Senhor? Se hoje vocês se revoltarem contra o Senhor, amanhã ele ficará irado com todo o povo de Israel. 19 Agora, se acham que a terra de vocês é impura, então passem para cá, para a terra de Deus, o Senhor, onde está a Tenda Sagrada em que ele mora. Peçam um pedaço de terra aqui do nosso lado. Porém não se revoltem contra o Senhor nem contra nós, construindo vocês mesmos outro altar além do altar do Senhor, nosso Deus. 20 Lembrem que Acã, filho de Zera, não quis obedecer ao mandamento a respeito das coisas que deviam ser destruídas, e todo o povo de Israel foi castigado por causa disso. E Acã não foi o único que morreu por causa do seu pecado."

21 Então o povo das tribos de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés do Leste respondeu aos chefes das famílias de Israel:

22 — Deus é o Poderoso! Ele é o Senhor! Deus é o Poderoso! Ele é o Senhor! Ele sabe por que fizemos isso, e fiquem sabendo vocês também. Se nós nos revoltamos e se não fomos fiéis ao Senhor, não nos deixem continuar a viver. 23 Nós não construímos o nosso altar para oferecer sacrifícios a serem completamente queimados, nem para colocar sobre ele ofertas de cereais ou ofertas de paz. Que o Senhor mesmo nos castigue se construímos este altar para desobedecer a ele! 24 Pelo contrário, fizemos isso porque ficamos com medo de que um dia os descendentes de vocês venham a dizer aos nossos: "Que ligação vocês têm com o Senhor, o Deus de Israel? 25 O Senhor pôs o rio Jordão como divisa entre nós e vocês, tribos de Rúben e de Gade. Vocês não têm nada a ver com Deus, o Senhor." E assim os descendentes de vocês poderiam fazer com que os nossos descendentes deixassem de adorar o Senhor. 26 Por isso o altar que construímos não foi para apresentar ofertas a serem completamente queimadas, nem para oferecer sacrifícios. 27 Pelo contrário, queríamos que fosse um sinal para nós, e para vocês, e para os nossos descendentes depois de nós. Seria um sinal para adorarmos o Senhor com as nossas ofertas a serem completamente queimadas, com sacrifícios de animais e com ofertas de paz. Isso foi feito para evitar que um dia os seus descendentes venham a dizer aos nossos: "Vocês não têm nenhuma ligação com o Senhor." 28 Nós pensamos que, se um dia isso acontecer, os nossos descendentes poderão dizer: "Vejam! Os nossos antepassados fizeram um altar igual ao altar de Deus, o Senhor. Ele não foi construído a fim de apresentarmos ofertas a serem completamente queimadas nem sacrifícios de animais, mas a fim de ser um sinal para nós e para vocês." 29 Nunca tivemos a intenção de nos revoltar contra o Senhor, nem pensamos em deixar de segui-lo. Nós não iríamos construir um altar para apresentar ofertas a serem completamente queimadas ou ofertas de cereais, nem para oferecer sacrifícios de animais. Nunca faríamos outro altar além do altar do Senhor, nosso Deus, que fica em frente da Tenda onde ele mora.

30 O sacerdote Fineias, os líderes do povo e os chefes das famílias de Israel que estavam com ele ouviram o que disse o povo das tribos de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés do Leste e ficaram satisfeitos. 31 E Fineias, filho do sacerdote Eleazar, disse ao povo de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés:

— Agora sabemos que o Senhor está entre nós, pois vocês não se revoltaram contra ele. Vocês salvaram o povo de Israel do castigo do Senhor.

32 Então Fineias e os líderes deixaram a gente de Rúben e de Gade na região de Gileade, voltaram para a terra de Canaã e contaram tudo ao povo de Israel. 33 O que disseram agradou aos israelitas. Então eles louvaram a Deus e não pensaram mais em fazer guerra, nem em destruir a terra onde a gente de Rúben e de Gade estava morando. 34 E a gente das tribos de Rúben e de Gade chamou o altar de "Testemunha" porque disseram: "É uma testemunha entre nós de que o Senhor é Deus."
