1 But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things; for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things; and the anger of the LORD burned against the people of Israel.2 Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-a'ven, east of Bethel, and said to them, "Go up and spy out the land." And the men went up and spied out Ai.3 And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, "Let not all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai; do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are but few."4 So about three thousand went up there from the people; and they fled before the men of Ai,5 and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six men of them, and chased them before the gate as far as Sheb'arim, and slew them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.6 Then Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads.7 And Joshua said, "Alas, O Lord GOD, why hast thou brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan!8 O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth; and what wilt thou do for thy great name?"10 The LORD said to Joshua, "Arise, why have you thus fallen upon your face?11 Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant which I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, and lied, and put them among their own stuff.12 Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become a thing for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, `Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the LORD, God of Israel, "There are devoted things in the midst of you, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies, until you take away the devoted things from among you."14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes; and the tribe which the LORD takes shall come near by families; and the family which the LORD takes shall come near by households; and the household which the LORD takes shall come near man by man.15 And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has done a shameful thing in Israel.'"16 So Joshua rose early in the morning, and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken;17 and he brought near the families of Judah, and the family of the Zer'ahites was taken; and he brought near the family of the Zer'ahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken;18 and he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.19 Then Joshua said to Achan, "My son, give glory to the LORD God of Israel, and render praise to him; and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me."20 And Achan answered Joshua, "Of a truth I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I did:21 when I saw among the spoil a beautiful mantle from Shinar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them, and took them; and behold, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath."22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath.23 And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and all the people of Israel; and they laid them down before the LORD.24 And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the mantle and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters, and his oxen and asses and sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the Valley of Achor.25 And Joshua said, "Why did you bring trouble on us? The LORD brings trouble on you today." And all Israel stoned him with stones; they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day; then the LORD turned from his burning anger. Therefore to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.

1 Deus havia ordenado ao povo de Israel que ninguém guardasse nada do que era para ser destruído, mas a ordem foi desobedecida. Acã escondeu algumas coisas, e por isso o Senhor ficou muito irado com os israelitas. Acã era filho de Carmi, descendente de Zabdi e descendente de Zera, da tribo de Judá.

2 Josué enviou alguns homens da cidade de Jericó até Ai, cidade que fica a leste de Betel, perto de Bete-Avém. Ele mandou que fossem ver a terra. Eles foram e examinaram bem a cidade. 3 Então voltaram e deram a Josué o seguinte relatório:

— Não é preciso que todo mundo vá. Mande só dois ou três mil homens atacarem Ai porque existe pouca gente lá.

4 Assim foram mais ou menos três mil. Porém os homens de Ai fizeram os israelitas recuarem 5 e mataram uns trinta e seis. E eles perseguiram os israelitas desde o portão da cidade até as pedreiras, matando-os na descida. Então o povo ficou completamente desanimado e perdeu toda a coragem.

6 Em sinal de tristeza, Josué rasgou a sua roupa e se jogou no chão, com o rosto em terra, na frente da arca da aliança de Deus, o Senhor. Os líderes de Israel fizeram a mesma coisa e ficaram ali com Josué até de tarde. E fizeram como ele: também jogaram terra na cabeça para mostrar que estavam tristes. 7 E Josué disse:

— Ó Senhor, meu Deus! Afinal de contas, por que fizeste este povo atravessar o rio Jordão? Foi para nos entregares aos amorreus, e eles nos matarem? Por que não ficamos do outro lado do Jordão? 8 Senhor, peço desculpas, mas já que Israel fugiu do inimigo, o que posso dizer? 9 Os cananeus e todos os outros moradores desta terra vão saber disso. Eles nos cercarão e nos matarão a todos. E neste caso o que farás em favor do teu grande nome?

10 O Senhor Deus respondeu a Josué:

— Levante-se! Por que é que você está aí desse jeito, com a cara no chão? 11 O povo de Israel pecou. Eles quebraram a aliança que haviam feito comigo, a aliança que eu mandei que guardassem. Ficaram com algumas coisas que eu mandei que fossem destruídas. Eles roubaram essas coisas, mentiram por causa delas e as colocaram no meio da bagagem deles. 12 É por isso que os israelitas não podem enfrentar o inimigo. Fogem dele porque agora eles mesmos estão condenados à destruição. Se vocês não destruírem o que roubaram, eu não continuarei com vocês. 13 Levante-se e vá santificar o povo. Diga que se purifiquem para amanhã porque eu, o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, digo isto: "Israelitas, vocês estão guardando algumas coisas que eu mandei destruir. Enquanto não se livrarem delas, vocês não poderão enfrentar os inimigos. 14 Amanhã vocês se apresentarão, tribo por tribo, e haverá sorteio. A tribo que eu indicar virá à frente, grupo de famílias por grupo de famílias. Aí o grupo de famílias que eu indicar virá à frente, família por família. Finalmente a família que eu indicar virá à frente, homem por homem. 15 Então aquele que o sorteio indicar que ficou com essas coisas será queimado: ele, a sua família e tudo o que possui. O que esse homem fez foi terrível: ele quebrou a aliança que o meu povo fez comigo."

16 Então Josué se levantou de madrugada e fez o povo de Israel se apresentar, tribo por tribo. O sorteio indicou a tribo de Judá. 17 Em seguida mandou que se apresentassem os grupos de famílias da tribo de Judá, e o grupo de Zera foi indicado. Aí chamou o grupo de Zera, família por família; e a família de Zabdi foi indicada. 18 Finalmente chamou a família de Zabdi, homem por homem, e Acã foi indicado. Acã era filho de Carmi, descendente de Zabdi, descendente de Zera, da tribo de Judá.

19 E Josué disse a Acã:

— Agora, meu filho, confesse a verdade diante do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Conte-me o que você fez; não procure esconder nada.

20 Acã respondeu:

— Sim, eu pequei contra o Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Vou contar o que fiz. 21 Entre as coisas que pegamos, vi uma bela capa da Babilônia; vi também duzentas barras de prata e uma barra de ouro que pesava mais ou menos meio quilo. Fiquei com tanta vontade de ter aquelas coisas, que guardei para mim. Estão escondidas, enterradas na minha barraca, e a prata está por baixo.

22 Então Josué mandou que alguns homens fossem depressa até a barraca; e eles, de fato, acharam as coisas enterradas e a prata por baixo. 23 Tiraram as coisas da barraca, e levaram a Josué e a todos os israelitas, e puseram tudo na presença de Deus, o Senhor. 24 Aí Josué e todo o povo de Israel pegaram Acã, a prata, a capa, a barra de ouro, os seus filhos e filhas, os seus bois, jumentos, ovelhas, a sua barraca e tudo o que ele tinha e os levaram para o vale da Desgraça. 25 E Josué disse:

— Por que é que você fez essa desgraça cair sobre nós? Agora o Senhor Deus vai fazer a desgraça cair sobre você!

Em seguida o povo todo matou Acã a pedradas. Eles apedrejaram e queimaram a sua família e tudo o que ele tinha. 26 E puseram em cima dele um montão de pedras, que está naquele lugar até agora . É por isso que até hoje o nome daquele lugar é vale da Desgraça.

Então a ira do Senhor passou.
