1 Then the whole company of them arose, and brought him before Pilate.2 And they began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ a king."3 And Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And he answered him, "You have said so."4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no crime in this man."5 But they were urgent, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place."6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.7 And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.9 So he questioned him at some length; but he made no answer.10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.11 And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then, arraying him in gorgeous apparel, he sent him back to Pilate.12 And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,14 and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him;15 neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Behold, nothing deserving death has been done by him;16 I will therefore chastise him and release him."17 But they all cried out together, "Away with this man, and release to us Barab'bas"--18 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city, and for murder.19 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus;20 but they shouted out, "Crucify, crucify him!"21 A third time he said to them, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no crime deserving death; I will therefore chastise him and release him."22 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.23 So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be granted.24 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, whom they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.25 And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyre'ne, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.26 And there followed him a great multitude of the people, and of women who bewailed and lamented him.27 But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.28 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, `Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck!'29 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, `Fall on us'; and to the hills, `Cover us.'30 For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"31 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.32 And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.33 And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments.34 And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!"35 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar,36 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"37 There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews."38 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!"39 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?40 And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."41 And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."42 And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."43 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,44 while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.45 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he breathed his last.46 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, and said, "Certainly this man was innocent!"47 And all the multitudes who assembled to see the sight, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.48 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance and saw these things.49 Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathe'a. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,50 who had not consented to their purpose and deed, and he was looking for the kingdom of God.51 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.52 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud, and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid.53 It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was beginning.54 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid;55 then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

1 Em seguida o grupo todo se levantou e levou Jesus para Pilatos. 2 Lá, começaram a acusá-lo, dizendo:

— Pegamos este homem tentando fazer o nosso povo se revoltar, dizendo a eles que não pagassem impostos ao Imperador e afirmando que ele é o Messias, um rei.

3 Aí Pilatos perguntou a Jesus:

— Você é o rei dos judeus?

Jesus respondeu:

— Quem está dizendo isso é o senhor.

4 Então Pilatos disse aos chefes dos sacerdotes e à multidão:

— Não encontro nenhum motivo para condenar este homem.

5 Mas eles insistiram:

— Ele está causando desordem entre o povo em toda a Judeia. Ele começou na Galileia e agora chegou aqui.

6 Ouvindo isso, Pilatos perguntou:

— Este homem é da Galileia?

7 Quando soube que Jesus era da região governada por Herodes, Pilatos o mandou para ele, pois Herodes também estava em Jerusalém naquela ocasião. 8 Herodes ficou muito contente quando viu Jesus, pois tinha ouvido falar a respeito dele e fazia muito tempo que queria vê-lo. Ele desejava ver Jesus fazer algum milagre. 9 Então fez muitas perguntas a Jesus, mas ele não respondeu nada. 10 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e os mestres da Lei se apresentaram e fizeram acusações muito fortes contra Jesus. 11 Herodes e os seus soldados zombaram de Jesus e o trataram com desprezo. Puseram nele uma capa luxuosa e o mandaram de volta para Pilatos. 12 Naquele dia Herodes e Pilatos, que antes eram inimigos, se tornaram amigos.

13 Pilatos reuniu os chefes dos sacerdotes, os líderes judeus e o povo 14 e disse:

— Vocês me trouxeram este homem e disseram que ele estava atiçando o povo para fazer uma revolta. Pois eu já lhe fiz várias perguntas diante de todos vocês, mas não encontrei nele nenhuma culpa dessas coisas de que vocês o acusam. 15 Herodes também não encontrou nada contra ele e por isso o mandou de volta para nós. Assim, é claro que este homem não fez nada que mereça a pena de morte. 16 Eu vou mandar que ele seja chicoteado e depois o soltarei.

17 [Na Festa da Páscoa, Pilatos tinha o costume de soltar algum preso, a pedido do povo.] 18 Aí toda a multidão começou a gritar:

— Mata esse homem! Solta Barrabás para nós!

19 Barrabás tinha sido preso por causa de uma revolta na cidade e por assassinato.

20 Então Pilatos, querendo soltar Jesus, falou outra vez com a multidão. 21 Mas eles gritavam mais ainda:

— Crucifica! Crucifica!

22 E Pilatos disse pela terceira vez:

— Mas qual foi o crime dele? Não vejo neste homem nada que faça com que ele mereça a pena de morte. Vou mandar que ele seja chicoteado e depois o soltarei.

23 Porém eles continuaram a gritar bem alto, pedindo que Jesus fosse crucificado; e a gritaria deles venceu. 24 Pilatos condenou Jesus à morte, como pediam. 25 E soltou o homem que eles queriam — aquele que havia sido preso por causa de revolta e de assassinato. E entregou Jesus para fazerem com ele o que quisessem.

26 Então os soldados levaram Jesus. No caminho, eles encontraram um homem chamado Simão, da cidade de Cirene, que vinha do campo. Agarraram Simão e o obrigaram a carregar a cruz, seguindo atrás de Jesus.

27 Uma grande multidão o seguia. Nela havia algumas mulheres que choravam e se lamentavam por causa dele. 28 Jesus virou-se para elas e disse:

— Mulheres de Jerusalém, não chorem por mim, mas por vocês e pelos seus filhos! 29 Porque chegarão os dias em que todos vão dizer: "Felizes as mulheres que nunca tiveram filhos, que nunca deram à luz e que nunca amamentaram!" 30 Chegará o tempo em que todos vão dizer às montanhas: "Caiam em cima de nós!" E dirão também aos montes: "Nos cubram!" 31 Porque, se isso tudo é feito quando a lenha está verde, o que acontecerá, então, quando ela estiver seca?

32 Levaram também dois criminosos para serem mortos com Jesus. 33 Quando chegaram ao lugar chamado "A Caveira", ali crucificaram Jesus e junto com ele os dois criminosos, um à sua direita e o outro à sua esquerda.

34 [Então Jesus disse:

— Pai, perdoa esta gente! Eles não sabem o que estão fazendo.]

Em seguida, tirando a sorte com dados, os soldados repartiram entre si as roupas de Jesus. 35 O povo ficou ali olhando, e os líderes judeus zombavam de Jesus, dizendo:

— Ele salvou os outros. Que salve a si mesmo, se é, de fato, o Messias que Deus escolheu!

36 Os soldados também zombavam de Jesus. Chegavam perto dele e lhe ofereciam vinho comum 37 e diziam:

— Se você é o rei dos judeus, salve a você mesmo!

38 Na cruz, acima da sua cabeça, estavam escritas as seguintes palavras: "Este é o Rei dos Judeus".

39 Um dos criminosos que estavam crucificados ali insultava Jesus, dizendo:

— Você não é o Messias? Então salve a você mesmo e a nós também!

40 Porém o outro o repreendeu, dizendo:

— Você não teme a Deus? Você está debaixo da mesma condenação que ele recebeu. 41 A nossa condenação é justa, e por isso estamos recebendo o castigo que nós merecemos por causa das coisas que fizemos; mas ele não fez nada de mau.

42 Então disse:

— Jesus, lembre de mim quando o senhor vier como Rei!

43 Jesus respondeu:

— Eu afirmo a você que isto é verdade: hoje você estará comigo no paraíso.

44 Mais ou menos ao meio-dia o sol parou de brilhar, e uma escuridão cobriu toda a terra até as três horas da tarde. 45 E a cortina do Templo se rasgou pelo meio. 46 Aí Jesus gritou bem alto:

— Pai, nas tuas mãos entrego o meu espírito!

Depois de dizer isso, ele morreu. 47 Quando o oficial do exército romano viu o que havia acontecido, deu glória a Deus, dizendo:

— De fato, este homem era inocente!

48 Todos os que estavam reunidos ali para assistir àquele espetáculo viram o que havia acontecido e voltaram para casa, batendo no peito em sinal de tristeza. 49 Todos os amigos de Jesus e as mulheres que o tinham seguido desde a Galileia ficaram de longe, olhando tudo aquilo.

50,51 Havia um homem chamado José, da cidade de Arimateia, na região da Judeia. Ele era bom e correto e esperava a vinda do Reino de Deus. Fazia parte do Conselho Superior, mas não tinha concordado com o que o Conselho havia resolvido e feito. 52 José foi e pediu a Pilatos o corpo de Jesus. 53 Então tirou o corpo da cruz e o enrolou num lençol de linho. Depois o colocou num túmulo cavado na rocha, que nunca havia sido usado. 54 Isso foi na sexta-feira, e já estava para começar o sábado.

55 As mulheres que haviam seguido Jesus desde a Galileia foram com José e viram o túmulo e como Jesus tinha sido colocado ali. 56 Depois voltaram para casa e prepararam perfumes e óleos para passar no corpo dele.

E no sábado elas descansaram, conforme a Lei manda.
