1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.2 This was the first enrollment, when Quirin'i-us was governor of Syria.3 And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city.4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,5 to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.6 And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered.7 And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.8 And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.10 And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people;11 for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger."13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."16 And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child;18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.19 But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.22 And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord")24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.27 And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,29 "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word;30 for mine eyes have seen thy salvation31 which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples,32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel."33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him;34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed."36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phan'u-el, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity,37 and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.38 And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.39 And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom;43 and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it,44 but supposing him to be in the company they went a day's journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances;45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions;47 and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48 And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously."49 And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"50 And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them.51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man.

Todas as pessoas deviam se registrar a fim de ser feita uma contagem da população. 2 Quando foi feito esse primeiro recenseamento, Cirênio era governador da Síria. 3 Então todos foram se registrar, cada um na sua própria cidade.

4 Por isso José foi de Nazaré, na Galileia, para a região da Judeia, a uma cidade chamada Belém, onde tinha nascido o rei Davi. José foi registrar-se lá porque era descendente de Davi. 5 Levou consigo Maria, com quem tinha casamento contratado . Ela estava grávida, 6 e aconteceu que, enquanto se achavam em Belém, chegou o tempo de a criança nascer. 7 Então Maria deu à luz o seu primeiro filho. Enrolou o menino em panos e o deitou numa manjedoura, pois não havia lugar para eles na pensão.

8 Naquela região havia pastores que estavam passando a noite nos campos, tomando conta dos rebanhos de ovelhas. 9 Então um anjo do Senhor apareceu, e a luz gloriosa do Senhor brilhou por cima dos pastores. Eles ficaram com muito medo, 10 mas o anjo disse:

— Não tenham medo! Estou aqui a fim de trazer uma boa notícia para vocês, e ela será motivo de grande alegria também para todo o povo! 11 Hoje mesmo, na cidade de Davi, nasceu o Salvador de vocês — o Messias, o Senhor! 12 Esta será a prova: vocês encontrarão uma criancinha enrolada em panos e deitada numa manjedoura.

13 No mesmo instante apareceu junto com o anjo uma multidão de outros anjos, como se fosse um exército celestial. Eles cantavam hinos de louvor a Deus, dizendo:

14 — Glória a Deus nas maiores alturas do céu!

E paz na terra para as pessoas a quem ele quer bem!

15 Quando os anjos voltaram para o céu, os pastores disseram uns aos outros:

— Vamos até Belém para ver o que aconteceu; vamos ver aquilo que o Senhor nos contou.

16 Eles foram depressa, e encontraram Maria e José, e viram o menino deitado na manjedoura. 17 Então contaram o que os anjos tinham dito a respeito dele. 18 Todos os que ouviram o que os pastores disseram ficaram muito admirados. 19 Maria guardava todas essas coisas no seu coração e pensava muito nelas. 20 Então os pastores voltaram para os campos, cantando hinos de louvor a Deus pelo que tinham ouvido e visto.

E tudo tinha acontecido como o anjo havia falado.

21 Uma semana depois, quando chegou o dia de circuncidar o menino, puseram nele o nome de Jesus. Pois o anjo tinha dado esse nome ao menino antes de ele nascer.

22 Chegou o dia de Maria e José cumprirem a cerimônia da purificação, conforme manda a Lei de Moisés. Então eles levaram a criança para Jerusalém a fim de apresentá-la ao Senhor. 23 Pois está escrito na Lei do Senhor: "Todo primeiro filho será separado e dedicado ao Senhor." 24 Eles foram lá também para oferecer em sacrifício duas rolinhas ou dois pombinhos, como a Lei do Senhor manda.

25 Em Jerusalém morava um homem chamado Simeão. Ele era bom e piedoso e esperava a salvação do povo de Israel. O Espírito Santo estava com ele, 26 e o próprio Espírito lhe tinha prometido que, antes de morrer, ele iria ver o Messias enviado pelo Senhor. 27 Guiado pelo Espírito, Simeão foi ao Templo. Quando os pais levaram o menino Jesus ao Templo para fazer o que a Lei manda, 28 Simeão pegou o menino no colo e louvou a Deus. Ele disse:

29 — Agora, Senhor, cumpriste a promessa

que fizeste

e já podes deixar este teu servo

partir em paz.

30 Pois eu já vi com os meus próprios olhos

a tua salvação,

31 que preparaste na presença

de todos os povos:

32 uma luz para mostrar o teu caminho

a todos os que não são judeus

e para dar glória ao teu povo de Israel.

33 O pai e a mãe do menino ficaram admirados com o que Simeão disse a respeito dele. 34 Simeão os abençoou e disse a Maria, a mãe de Jesus:

— Este menino foi escolhido por Deus tanto para a destruição como para a salvação de muita gente em Israel. Ele vai ser um sinal de Deus; muitas pessoas falarão contra ele, 35 e assim os pensamentos secretos delas serão conhecidos. E a tristeza, como uma espada afiada, cortará o seu coração, Maria.

36 Havia ali também uma profetisa chamada Ana, que era viúva e muito idosa. Ela era filha de Fanuel, da tribo de Aser. Sete anos depois que ela havia casado, o seu marido morreu. 37 Agora ela estava com oitenta e quatro anos de idade. Nunca saía do pátio do Templo e adorava a Deus dia e noite, jejuando e fazendo orações. 38 Naquele momento ela chegou e começou a louvar a Deus e a falar a respeito do menino para todos os que esperavam a libertação de Jerusalém.

39 Quando terminaram de fazer tudo o que a Lei do Senhor manda, José e Maria voltaram para a Galileia, para a casa deles na cidade de Nazaré.

40 O menino crescia e ficava forte; tinha muita sabedoria e era abençoado por Deus.

41 Todos os anos os pais de Jesus iam a Jerusalém para a Festa da Páscoa. 42 Quando Jesus tinha doze anos, eles foram à Festa, conforme o seu costume. 43 Depois que a Festa acabou, eles começaram a viagem de volta para casa. Mas Jesus tinha ficado em Jerusalém, e os seus pais não sabiam disso. 44 Eles pensavam que ele estivesse no grupo de pessoas que vinha voltando e por isso viajaram o dia todo. Então começaram a procurá-lo entre os parentes e amigos. 45 Como não o encontraram, voltaram a Jerusalém para procurá-lo. 46 Três dias depois encontraram o menino num dos pátios do Templo, sentado no meio dos mestres da Lei, ouvindo-os e fazendo perguntas a eles. 47 Todos os que o ouviam estavam muito admirados com a sua inteligência e com as respostas que dava. 48 Quando os pais viram o menino, também ficaram admirados. E a sua mãe lhe disse:

— Meu filho, por que foi que você fez isso conosco? O seu pai e eu estávamos muito aflitos procurando você.

49 Jesus respondeu:

— Por que vocês estavam me procurando? Não sabiam que eu devia estar na casa do meu Pai?

50 Mas eles não entenderam o que ele disse.

51 Então Jesus voltou com os seus pais para Nazaré e continuava a ser obediente a eles. E a sua mãe guardava tudo isso no coração.

52 Conforme crescia, Jesus ia crescendo também em sabedoria, e tanto Deus como as pessoas gostavam cada vez mais dele.
