1 The word of the LORD came to me:2 "Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman;3 and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people;4 then if any one who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life.6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes, and takes any one of them; that man is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.7 "So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.8 If I say to the wicked, O wicked man, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.9 But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way; he shall die in his iniquity, but you will have saved your life.10 "And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: `Our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live?'11 Say to them, As I live, says the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel?12 And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness; and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins.13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in the iniquity that he has committed he shall die.14 Again, though I say to the wicked, `You shall surely die,' yet if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right,15 if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.16 None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done what is lawful and right, he shall surely live.17 "Yet your people say, `The way of the Lord is not just'; when it is their own way that is not just.18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall die for it.19 And when the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does what is lawful and right, he shall live by it.20 Yet you say, `The way of the Lord is not just.' O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways."21 In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, a man who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, "The city has fallen."22 Now the hand of the LORD had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning; so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer dumb.23 The word of the LORD came to me:24 "Son of man, the inhabitants of these waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, `Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but we are many; the land is surely given us to possess.'25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: You eat flesh with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood; shall you then possess the land?26 You resort to the sword, you commit abominations and each of you defiles his neighbor's wife; shall you then possess the land?27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword; and him that is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured; and those who are in strongholds and in caves shall die by pestilence.28 And I will make the land a desolation and a waste; and her proud might shall come to an end; and the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that none will pass through.29 Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations which they have committed.30 "As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, `Come, and hear what the word is that comes forth from the LORD.'31 And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with their lips they show much love, but their heart is set on their gain.32 And, lo, you are to them like one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it.33 When this comes--and come it will!--then they will know that a prophet has been among them."

1 O Senhor me disse o seguinte:

2 — Homem mortal, diga ao seu povo o que acontece quando eu faço vir a guerra a um lugar. O povo desse lugar escolhe alguém para ser vigia. 3 Quando vê o inimigo chegando, o vigia dá o alarme para avisar toda a gente. 4 Se alguém ouve o aviso, porém não se importa, e o inimigo vem e o mata, esse alguém é responsável pela sua própria morte. 5 Ele é culpado da sua própria morte porque não se importou com o alarme. Se tivesse se importado, poderia ter escapado. 6 Mas, se o vigia vê o inimigo se aproximando e não dá o alarme, o inimigo vem e mata aqueles pecadores. Nesse caso, eu considerarei o vigia como responsável pela morte deles.

7 — Agora, homem mortal, eu estou pondo você como vigia de toda a nação de Israel. Você dará a eles os avisos que eu lhe der. 8 Se eu disser que um homem mau vai morrer, mas você não o avisar para que mude o seu modo de agir e assim salve a sua vida, aí ele morrerá, sendo ainda pecador. Nesse caso, eu considerarei você como responsável pela morte dele. 9 Porém, se você avisar o homem mau, e ele não parar de pecar, ele morrerá como pecador, mas você viverá.

10 O Senhor me disse o seguinte:

— Homem mortal, repita aos israelitas o que eles andam dizendo: "Os nossos pecados e maldades são um peso para nós. Estamos nos acabando. Como podemos viver?" 11 Diga-lhes que juro pela minha vida que eu, o Senhor Deus, não me alegro com a morte de um pecador. Eu gostaria que ele parasse de fazer o mal e vivesse. Povo de Israel, pare de fazer o mal. Por que é que vocês estão querendo morrer?

12 — Agora, homem mortal, diga aos israelitas que, quando um homem correto pecar, o bem que ele fez não o salvará. Se um homem mau parar de fazer o mal, ele não será castigado; e, se um homem correto começar a pecar, ele não continuará vivendo. 13 Se eu prometer dar a vida a um homem correto, e se ele começar a pecar porque pensa que a sua bondade passada o salvará, aí eu não lembrarei de nenhuma das boas ações que praticou. Ele morrerá por causa dos seus pecados. 14 Se eu avisar um homem mau, dizendo que vai morrer, e se ele parar de pecar e fizer o que é bom e correto — 15 por exemplo, se devolver o objeto que lhe deram como garantia de pagamento de uma dívida ou se devolver o que roubou — se ele parar de pecar e seguir as leis que dão vida, ele não morrerá, mas viverá. 16 Eu perdoarei os pecados que cometeu. Ele viverá porque fez o que é bom e correto.

17 — No entanto, o seu povo diz que o que eu, o Senhor, faço não está certo! São eles que não estão certos! 18 Quando um homem correto para de fazer o bem e começa a fazer o mal, ele morrerá por causa disso. 19 Quando um homem mau para de pecar e faz o que é bom e correto, ele salvou a sua vida. 20 Mas você, povo de Israel, diz que o que eu faço não está certo. Eu os julgarei por aquilo que fazem.

21 No ano décimo segundo do nosso cativeiro, no dia cinco do décimo segundo mês , um homem que havia escapado de Jerusalém veio e me contou que a cidade tinha sido tomada. 22 Na noite antes da chegada dele, eu tinha sentido a presença poderosa de Deus, o Senhor. E na manhã seguinte, quando o homem chegou, o Senhor me deu de novo a fala .

23 O Senhor me disse o seguinte:

24 — Homem mortal, os moradores das cidades arrasadas na terra de Israel estão dizendo o seguinte: "Abraão era um homem só, e toda esta terra foi dada a ele. Nós somos muitos, e por isso agora a terra é nossa."

25 — Diga a essa gente o que eu, o Senhor Deus, estou dizendo: "Vocês comem carne com sangue , adoram ídolos e cometem crimes de morte. Por que é que estão pensando que a terra é de vocês? 26 Vocês confiam nas suas espadas. O seu modo de agir é nojento. Todos cometem adultério. Por que estão pensando que a terra é de vocês?"

27 — Diga a essa gente que eu, o Senhor Deus, estou avisando: Juro que os moradores das cidades arrasadas serão mortos. Os que vivem no campo serão comidos por animais selvagens. Os que estão escondidos nas montanhas e cavernas ficarão doentes e morrerão. 28 Farei com que o país vire um deserto abandonado. O poder de que se orgulhavam acabará. As montanhas de Israel ficarão tão desertas, que ninguém passará por elas. 29 Quando eu castigar o povo pelos seus pecados e fizer com que o país vire um deserto, aí eles ficarão sabendo que eu sou o Senhor.

30 O Senhor disse:

— Homem mortal, quando os seus irmãos israelitas conversam perto das muralhas da cidade ou na porta das suas casas, eles falam de você. Eles dizem: "Vamos saber o que o Senhor tem para nos dizer agora." 31 Assim o meu povo se ajunta em grande número para ouvir o que você tem para dizer, mas eles não querem pôr em prática o que você diz. "Ele fala bonito" — eles dizem, mas o que querem é ganhar dinheiro. 32 Para eles você não passa de um cantor de canções de amor ou tocador de harpa. Eles ouvem o que você diz, porém não fazem nada daquilo que você manda. 33 Porém, quando acontecer tudo o que você diz — e vai acontecer mesmo —, aí eles ficarão sabendo que um profeta esteve no meio deles.
