1 The word of the LORD came to me again:2 "What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, `The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'?3 As I live, says the Lord GOD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel.4 Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sins shall die.5 "If a man is righteous and does what is lawful and right--6 if he does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman in her time of impurity,7 does not oppress any one, but restores to the debtor his pledge, commits no robbery, gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment,8 does not lend at interest or take any increase, withholds his hand from iniquity, executes true justice between man and man,9 walks in my statutes, and is careful to observe my ordinances--he is righteous, he shall surely live, says the Lord GOD.10 "If he begets a son who is a robber, a shedder of blood,11 who does none of these duties, but eats upon the mountains, defiles his neighbor's wife,12 oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore the pledge, lifts up his eyes to the idols, commits abomination,13 lends at interest, and takes increase; shall he then live? He shall not live. He has done all these abominable things; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon himself.14 "But if this man begets a son who sees all the sins which his father has done, and fears, and does not do likewise,15 who does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor's wife,16 does not wrong any one, exacts no pledge, commits no robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment,17 withholds his hand from iniquity, takes no interest or increase, observes my ordinances, and walks in my statutes; he shall not die for his father's iniquity; he shall surely live.18 As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, behold, he shall die for his iniquity.19 "Yet you say, `Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?' When the son has done what is lawful and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live.20 The soul that sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.21 "But if a wicked man turns away from all his sins which he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die.22 None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness which he has done he shall live.23 Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord GOD, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?24 But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity and does the same abominable things that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds which he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, he shall die.25 "Yet you say, `The way of the Lord is not just.' Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?26 When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die for it; for the iniquity which he has committed he shall die.27 Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he shall save his life.28 Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions which he had committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.29 Yet the house of Israel says, `The way of the Lord is not just.' O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?30 "Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin.31 Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel?32 For I have no pleasure in the death of any one, says the Lord GOD; so turn, and live."

1 O Senhor me disse o seguinte:

2 — Por que será que na terra de Israel o povo vive repetindo o ditado que diz: "Os pais comeram uvas verdes, mas foram os dentes dos filhos que ficaram ásperos"?

3 — Juro pela minha vida — diz o Senhor Deus — que vocês nunca mais repetirão esse ditado em Israel. 4 Pois a vida de todas as pessoas pertence a mim. Tanto a vida do pai quanto a vida do filho são minhas. A pessoa que pecar é que morrerá.

5 — Imaginem que exista um homem verdadeiramente bom, correto e honesto. 6 Esse homem não adora os ídolos dos israelitas, nem come a carne dos sacrifícios oferecidos em templos proibidos. Ele não seduz mulheres casadas, nem tem relações com mulher durante as regras. 7 Não engana, nem rouba ninguém. Devolve aquilo que lhe foi dado como garantia de empréstimo. Dá comida a quem tem fome e roupa a quem está nu. 8 Quando empresta, não cobra juros altos. Recusa-se a fazer o mal, e em qualquer questão as suas decisões são justas. 9 Obedece aos meus mandamentos e guarda cuidadosamente as minhas leis. Esse homem é correto e viverá — diz o Senhor Deus.

10 — Imaginem também que esse homem tenha um filho que rouba, mata e faz coisas 11 que o pai nunca fez. Esse filho come a carne dos sacrifícios oferecidos em templos proibidos e seduz mulheres casadas. 12 Engana os pobres, rouba e fica com aquilo que lhe foi dado como garantia de empréstimo. Ele vai a templos pagãos, adora ídolos nojentos 13 e empresta dinheiro a juros altos. Será que ele vai viver? Não! Não vai! Ele fez todas essas coisas vergonhosas e morrerá por causa delas. Esse filho será culpado da sua própria morte.

14 — Agora, imaginem que, por sua vez, esse filho tenha um filho. Esse filho vê todos os pecados que o pai cometeu, mas não segue o seu exemplo. 15 Não adora os ídolos dos israelitas, nem come a carne dos sacrifícios oferecidos em templos proibidos. Não seduz mulheres casadas 16 e não explora, nem rouba ninguém. Ele devolve aquilo que lhe foi dado como garantia de empréstimo. Dá comida a quem tem fome e roupa a quem está nu. 17 Ele se recusa a fazer o mal e não empresta dinheiro a juros altos. Guarda as minhas leis e obedece aos meus mandamentos. Ele não morrerá por causa dos pecados do pai. É certo que viverá. 18 O pai dele enganou, e roubou, e só prejudicou os outros. Por isso, morreu por causa dos seus próprios pecados.

19 — Mas vocês perguntam: "Por que é que o filho não sofre por causa dos pecados do pai?" A resposta é esta: é porque o filho fez o que era correto e bom. Ele guardou as minhas leis, e as seguiu cuidadosamente, e por isso é certo que viverá. 20 Aquele que peca é que morre. O filho não sofrerá por causa dos pecados do pai, nem o pai, por causa dos pecados do filho. A pessoa boa será recompensada por fazer o bem, e a pessoa má sofrerá pelo mal que praticar.

21 — Se um homem mau parar de pecar, se guardar as minhas leis e se fizer o que é certo e bom, não morrerá; é certo que viverá. 22 Todos os seus pecados serão perdoados, e ele viverá porque fez o que é certo. 23 Vocês pensam que eu gosto de ver um homem mau morrer? — pergunta o Senhor Deus. — Não! Eu gostaria mais de vê-lo arrepender-se e viver.

24 — Mas, se um homem correto deixar de fazer o bem e começar a fazer todas as coisas más e vergonhosas que os homens maus fazem, será que ele vai continuar a viver? Não! Nenhuma das boas ações que ele praticou será lembrada. Ele morrerá por causa da sua infidelidade e dos seus pecados.

25 — Mas vocês dizem: "O que o Senhor faz não está certo." Escutem aqui, israelitas! Vocês pensam que o meu modo de fazer as coisas não está certo? Pois o modo de vocês é que não está. 26 Quando um homem direito para de fazer o bem, e começa a fazer o mal, e então morre, ele morre por causa do mal que praticou. 27 Quando um homem mau para de pecar e faz o que é certo e bom, ele salvou a sua vida. 28 Ele compreendeu o que estava fazendo e deixou de pecar; por isso, é certo que ele não vai morrer, mas continuará a viver. 29 E vocês, israelitas, dizem: "O que o Senhor faz não está certo." Vocês pensam que o meu modo de fazer as coisas não está certo, não é? Pois é o modo de vocês que não está.

30 — Agora, eu, o Senhor Deus, estou dizendo a vocês, israelitas, que vou julgar cada um pelo que tem feito. Arrependam-se de todo mal que estão praticando e não deixem que os seus pecados os destruam. 31 Abandonem todo mal que vêm fazendo e criem dentro de vocês mesmos um coração novo e uma mente nova. Israelitas, por que vocês querem morrer? 32 Eu não quero que ninguém morra! — diz o Senhor Deus. — Portanto, parem de pecar e vivam.
