1 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the multitude had gathered together that they trod upon one another, he began to say to his disciples first, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.4 "I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear him!6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.8 "And I tell you, every one who acknowledges me before men, the Son of man also will acknowledge before the angels of God;9 but he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.10 And every one who speaks a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious how or what you are to answer or what you are to say;12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say."13 One of the multitude said to him, "Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me."14 But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or divider over you?"15 And he said to them, "Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."16 And he told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully;17 and he thought to himself, `What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?'18 And he said, `I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods.19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.'20 But God said to him, `Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?'21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."22 And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat, nor about your body, what you shall put on.23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!25 And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his span of life?26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?27 Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.28 But if God so clothes the grass which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O men of little faith!29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind.30 For all the nations of the world seek these things; and your Father knows that you need them.31 Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things shall be yours as well.32 "Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.33 Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.35 "Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning,36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the marriage feast, so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks.37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes; truly, I say to you, he will gird himself and have them sit at table, and he will come and serve them.38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants!39 But know this, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.40 You also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an unexpected hour."41 Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?"42 And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?43 Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing.44 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.45 But if that servant says to himself, `My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful.47 And that servant who knew his master's will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating.48 But he who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and of him to whom men commit much they will demand the more.49 "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!50 I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished!51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division;52 for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three;53 they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."54 He also said to the multitudes, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, `A shower is coming'; and so it happens.55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, `There will be scorching heat'; and it happens.56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?57 "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?58 As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison.59 I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper."

1 Milhares de pessoas se ajuntaram, de tal maneira que umas pisavam as outras. Então Jesus disse primeiro aos discípulos:

— Cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus, isto é, com a falsidade deles. 2 Tudo o que está coberto vai ser descoberto, e o que está escondido será conhecido. 3 Assim tudo o que vocês disserem na escuridão será ouvido na luz do dia. E tudo o que disserem em segredo, dentro de um quarto fechado, será anunciado abertamente.

4 Jesus continuou:

— Eu afirmo a vocês, meus amigos: não tenham medo daqueles que matam o corpo, mas depois não podem fazer mais nada. 5 Vou mostrar a vocês de quem devem ter medo: tenham medo de Deus, que, depois de matar o corpo, tem poder para jogar a pessoa no inferno. Sim, repito: tenham medo de Deus.

6 — Por acaso não é verdade que cinco passarinhos são vendidos por algumas moedinhas? No entanto Deus não esquece nenhum deles. 7 Até os fios dos cabelos de vocês estão todos contados. Não tenham medo, pois vocês valem mais do que muitos passarinhos!

8 Jesus disse ainda:

— Eu digo a vocês que, se alguém afirmar publicamente que é meu, então o Filho do Homem também afirmará, diante dos anjos de Deus, que essa pessoa é dele. 9 Mas aquele que disser publicamente que não é meu, o Filho do Homem também dirá diante dos anjos de Deus que essa pessoa não é dele.

10 — Quem falar contra o Filho do Homem será perdoado, porém quem blasfemar contra o Espírito Santo não será perdoado.

11 — Quando levarem vocês para serem julgados nas sinagogas ou diante dos governadores e autoridades, não fiquem preocupados, pensando como vão se defender ou o que vão dizer. 12 Pois naquela hora o Espírito Santo lhes ensinará o que devem dizer.

13 Um homem que estava no meio da multidão disse a Jesus:

— Mestre, mande o meu irmão repartir comigo a herança que o nosso pai nos deixou.

14 Jesus disse:

— Homem, quem me deu o direito de julgar ou de repartir propriedades entre vocês?

15 E continuou, dizendo a todos:

— Prestem atenção! Tenham cuidado com todo tipo de avareza porque a verdadeira vida de uma pessoa não depende das coisas que ela tem, mesmo que sejam muitas.

16 Então Jesus contou a seguinte parábola:

— As terras de um homem rico deram uma grande colheita. 17 Então ele começou a pensar: "Eu não tenho lugar para guardar toda esta colheita. O que é que vou fazer? 18 Ah! Já sei! — disse para si mesmo. — Vou derrubar os meus depósitos de cereais e construir outros maiores ainda. Neles guardarei todas as minhas colheitas junto com tudo o que tenho. 19 Então direi a mim mesmo: ‘Homem feliz! Você tem tudo de bom que precisa para muitos anos. Agora descanse, coma, beba e alegre-se.’ " 20 Mas Deus lhe disse: "Seu tolo! Esta noite você vai morrer; aí quem ficará com tudo o que você guardou?"

21 Jesus concluiu:

— Isso é o que acontece com aqueles que juntam riquezas para si mesmos, mas para Deus não são ricos.

22 Então Jesus disse aos seus discípulos:

— É por isso que eu digo a vocês: não se preocupem com a comida que precisam para viver nem com a roupa que precisam para se vestir. 23 Pois a vida é mais importante do que a comida, e o corpo é mais importante do que as roupas. 24 Vejam os corvos: não semeiam, não colhem, não têm despensas nem depósitos, mas Deus dá de comer a eles. Será que vocês não valem muito mais do que os pássaros? 25 Qual de vocês pode encompridar a sua vida, por mais que se preocupe com isso? 26 Portanto, se vocês não podem conseguir uma coisa assim tão pequena, por que se preocupam com as outras? 27 Vejam como crescem as flores do campo: elas não trabalham, nem fazem roupas para si mesmas. Mas eu afirmo a vocês que nem mesmo Salomão, sendo tão rico, usava roupas tão bonitas como uma dessas flores. 28 É Deus quem veste a erva do campo, que hoje está aqui e amanhã desaparece, queimada no forno. Então é claro que ele vestirá também vocês, que têm uma fé tão pequena! 29 Portanto, não fiquem aflitos, procurando sempre o que comer ou o que beber. 30 Pois os pagãos deste mundo é que estão sempre procurando todas essas coisas. O Pai de vocês sabe que vocês precisam de tudo isso. 31 Portanto, ponham em primeiro lugar na sua vida o Reino de Deus, e Deus lhes dará todas essas coisas.

32 Jesus continuou:

— Meu pequeno rebanho, não tenha medo! Pois o Pai tem prazer em dar o Reino a vocês. 33 Vendam tudo o que vocês têm e deem o dinheiro aos pobres. Arranjem bolsas que não se estragam e guardem as suas riquezas no céu, onde elas nunca se acabarão; porque lá os ladrões não podem roubá-las, e as traças não podem destruí-las. 34 Pois onde estiverem as suas riquezas, aí estará o coração de vocês.

35 E Jesus disse ainda:

— Fiquem preparados para tudo: estejam com a roupa bem presa com o cinto e conservem as lamparinas acesas. 36 Sejam como os empregados que esperam pelo patrão, que vai voltar da festa de casamento. Logo que ele bate na porta, os empregados vão abrir. 37 Felizes aqueles empregados que o patrão encontra acordados e preparados! Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: o próprio patrão se preparará para servi-los, mandará que se sentem à mesa e ele mesmo os servirá. 38 Eles serão felizes se o patrão os encontrar alertas, mesmo que chegue à meia-noite ou até mais tarde. 39 Lembrem disto: se o dono da casa soubesse a que hora o ladrão viria, não o deixaria arrombar a sua casa. 40 Vocês, também, fiquem alertas, porque o Filho do Homem vai chegar quando não estiverem esperando.

41 Então Pedro perguntou:

— Senhor, essa parábola é só para nós ou é para todos?

42 O Senhor respondeu:

— Quem é, então, o empregado fiel e inteligente? É aquele que o patrão encarrega de tomar conta da casa e de dar comida na hora certa aos outros empregados. 43 Feliz aquele empregado que estiver fazendo isso quando o patrão chegar! 44 Eu afirmo a vocês que, de fato, o patrão vai colocá-lo como encarregado de toda a sua propriedade. 45 Mas imaginem o que acontecerá se aquele empregado pensar que o seu patrão está demorando muito para voltar. E imaginem que esse empregado comece a bater nos outros empregados e empregadas e a comer e a beber até ficar bêbado. 46 Então o patrão voltará no dia em que o empregado menos espera e na hora que ele não sabe. Aí o patrão mandará cortar o empregado em pedaços e o condenará a ir para o lugar aonde os desobedientes vão.

47 — O empregado que sabe qual é a vontade do patrão, mas não se prepara e não faz o que ele quer, será castigado com muitas chicotadas. 48 Mas o empregado que não sabe o que o patrão quer e faz alguma coisa que merece castigo, esse empregado será castigado com poucas chicotadas. Assim será pedido muito de quem recebe muito; e, daquele a quem muito é dado, muito mais será pedido.

49 Jesus continuou:

— Eu vim para pôr fogo na terra e como eu gostaria que ele já estivesse aceso! 50 Tenho de receber um batismo e como estou aflito até que isso aconteça! 51 Vocês pensam que eu vim trazer paz ao mundo? Pois eu afirmo a vocês que não vim trazer paz, mas divisão. 52 Porque daqui em diante uma família de cinco pessoas ficará dividida: três contra duas e duas contra três. 53 Os pais vão ficar contra os filhos, e os filhos, contra os pais. As mães vão ficar contra as filhas, e as filhas, contra as mães. As sogras vão ficar contra as noras, e as noras, contra as sogras.

54 Jesus disse também ao povo:

— Quando vocês veem uma nuvem subindo no oeste, dizem logo: "Vai chover." E, de fato, chove. 55 E, quando sentem o vento sul soprando, dizem: "Vai fazer calor." E faz mesmo. 56 Hipócritas! Vocês sabem explicar os sinais da terra e do céu. Então por que não sabem explicar o que querem dizer os sinais desta época?

57 E Jesus terminou, dizendo:

— Por que é que vocês mesmos não decidem qual é a maneira certa de agir? 58 Se alguém fizer uma acusação contra você e levá-lo ao tribunal, faça o possível para resolver a questão enquanto ainda está no caminho com essa pessoa. Isso para que ela não o leve ao juiz, o juiz o entregue ao guarda, e o guarda ponha você na cadeia. 59 Eu lhe afirmo que você não sairá dali enquanto não pagar a multa toda.
