1 In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechari'ah in the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Chislev.2 Now the people of Bethel had sent Share'zer and Reg'em-mel'ech and their men, to entreat the favor of the LORD,3 and to ask the priests of the house of the LORD of hosts and the prophets, "Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?"4 Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me;5 "Say to all the people of the land and the priests, When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted?6 And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves?7 When Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, with her cities round about her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited, were not these the words which the LORD proclaimed by the former prophets?"8 And the word of the LORD came to Zechari'ah, saying,9 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy each to his brother,10 do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart."11 But they refused to hearken, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears that they might not hear.12 They made their hearts like adamant lest they should hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts.13 "As I called, and they would not hear, so they called, and I would not hear," says the LORD of hosts,14 "and I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land they left was desolate, so that no one went to and fro, and the pleasant land was made desolate."

1 No dia quatro do mês nove, chamado quisleu, do quarto ano do reinado de Dario, o Senhor Deus me deu uma mensagem. 2 Isso aconteceu quando o povo de Betel enviou Sarezer e Regém-Meleque, com os seus companheiros, ao Templo do Senhor Todo-Poderoso para pedirem a ajuda dele. 3 E deviam também fazer aos sacerdotes do Templo e aos profetas a seguinte pergunta:

— Faz muitos anos que nós choramos e jejuamos no quinto mês, o mês em que o Templo foi destruído. Devemos continuar fazendo isso?

4 Então o Senhor Todo-Poderoso falou comigo 5 e mandou que eu dissesse o seguinte ao povo e aos sacerdotes:

— Já faz setenta anos que vocês choram e jejuam no quinto mês e também no sétimo. Mas não é em minha honra que vocês fazem isso. 6 E, quando comem e bebem, é só para satisfazer os seus próprios desejos.

7 Essa mensagem foi a mesma que o Senhor Deus tinha dado antes por meio dos profetas antigos, quando Jerusalém estava em paz e tinha muitos moradores. E o mesmo acontecia nas cidades ao redor e nas cidades da região sul e nas planícies de Judá.

8 O Senhor Deus falou com Zacarias e disse:

9 — Eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, tinha ordenado isto ao povo: "Sejam honestos e corretos e tratem uns aos outros com bondade e compaixão. 10 Não explorem as viúvas, nem os órfãos, nem os estrangeiros que moram com vocês, nem os pobres. E não façam planos para prejudicar os seus patrícios." 11 Porém eles se revoltaram e não quiseram obedecer. Viraram as costas para mim e taparam os ouvidos para não ouvir as minhas ordens. 12 Tornaram os corações deles duros como o diamante a fim de não obedecer à Lei e às mensagens que eu, por meio do meu Espírito, dei aos profetas antigos. Por isso, eu fiquei muito irado com eles. 13 E assim como eles não quiseram ouvir quando eu falei, assim também eu não vou escutar quando eles orarem a mim. Sou eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, quem está falando. 14 Como um furacão, eu os espalhei por todos os países estrangeiros, e a terra de onde saíram ficou tão arrasada, que ninguém podia viver lá. Uma terra tão boa e tão rica virou um deserto!
