1 Then Jacob called his sons, and said, "Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in days to come.2 Assemble and hear, O sons of Jacob, and hearken to Israel your father.3 Reuben, you are my first-born, my might, and the first fruits of my strength, pre-eminent in pride and pre-eminent in power.4 Unstable as water, you shall not have pre-eminence because you went up to your father's bed; then you defiled it--you went up to my couch!5 Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords.6 O my soul, come not into their council; O my spirit, be not joined to their company; for in their anger they slay men, and in their wantonness they hamstring oxen.7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.8 Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down before you.9 Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a lioness; who dares rouse him up?10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.11 Binding his foal to the vine and his ass's colt to the choice vine, he washes his garments in wine and his vesture in the blood of grapes;12 his eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.13 Zeb'ulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea; he shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon.14 Is'sachar is a strong ass, crouching between the sheepfolds;15 he saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant; so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a slave at forced labor.16 Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel.17 Dan shall be a serpent in the way, a viper by the path, that bites the horse's heels so that his rider falls backward.18 I wait for thy salvation, O LORD.19 Raiders shall raid Gad, but he shall raid at their heels.20 Asher's food shall be rich, and he shall yield royal dainties.21 Naph'tali is a hind let loose, that bears comely fawns.22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a spring; his branches run over the wall.23 The archers fiercely attacked him, shot at him, and harassed him sorely;24 yet his bow remained unmoved, his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel),25 by the God of your father who will help you, by God Almighty who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that couches beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb.26 The blessings of your father are mighty beyond the blessings of the eternal mountains, the bounties of the everlasting hills; may they be on the head of Joseph, and on the brow of him who was separate from his brothers.27 Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, in the morning devouring the prey, and at even dividing the spoil."28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel; and this is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him.29 Then he charged them, and said to them, "I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,30 in the cave that is in the field at Mach-pe'lah, to the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place.31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah--32 the field and the cave that is in it were purchased from the Hittites."33 When Jacob finished charging his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed, and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

1 Jacó chamou os seus filhos e disse:

— Fiquem em volta de mim, e eu lhes direi o que vai acontecer com vocês no futuro.

2 "Fiquem reunidos em volta de mim

para ouvir, filhos de Jacó;

escutem o que diz Israel, o seu pai.

3 "Rúben, você é o meu filho mais velho.

Você é a minha força,

o primeiro fruto do meu vigor,

o mais orgulhoso e o mais forte

dos meus filhos.

4 Você é violento como a correnteza,

porém não será o mais importante,

pois dormiu com a minha concubina,

desonrando assim a cama do seu pai.

5 "Simeão e Levi são irmãos;

com as suas armas praticam violências.

6 Não estarei presente

quando fizerem planos,

não tomarei parte nas suas reuniões,

pois no seu furor mataram homens

e por brincadeira aleijaram touros.

7 Maldito seja o furor deles,

pois é violento!

Maldita seja a sua ira, pois é cruel!

Eu os dividirei na terra de Israel,

eu os espalharei no meio do seu povo.

8 "Judá, os seus irmãos o louvarão

e se curvarão na sua frente.

Você segurará os inimigos

pelo pescoço.

9 O meu filho Judá é como um leãozinho

quando mata a sua vítima;

ele se agacha e se deita como um leão

e como uma leoa.

Quem tem a coragem de mexer com ele?

10 Judá vai segurar o cetro de rei,

e os seus descendentes

sempre governarão.

As nações lhe trarão presentes,

os povos lhe obedecerão.

11 Ele amarra o seu jumentinho

numa parreira,

na melhor parreira que há.

Ele lava as suas roupas no vinho,

lava a sua capa no vinho cor de sangue.

12 Os seus olhos estão vermelhos

de beber vinho,

os seus dentes estão brancos

de beber leite.

13 "Zebulom morará no litoral,

onde haverá portos para navios.

A sua fronteira chegará até Sidom.

14 "Issacar é como um jumento forte,

deitado entre as suas cargas.

15 Quando viu que o país era bom

e agradável para descansar,

ele se abaixou para que colocassem

a carga nas suas costas

e, sem reclamar, trabalhou

como um escravo.

16 "Dã governará a sua própria gente;

será como as outras tribos de Israel.

17 Dã será como uma cobra

na beira da estrada,

como uma serpente venenosa no caminho,

que morde a pata do cavalo,

fazendo cair para trás

o seu cavaleiro.

18 "Ó Senhor, meu Deus, espero que me salves!

19 "Gade será atacado por um bando

de ladrões,

mas depois ele os perseguirá.

20 "A terra de Aser produzirá

bons alimentos,

dará alimentos que só reis merecem.

21 "Naftali é como uma corça solta

que tem lindos filhotes.

22 "José é como uma planta

perto de uma fonte;

ela dá muita fruta,

e os seus galhos sobem pelo muro.

23 Os inimigos o atacam com violência

e o perseguem com os seus arcos

e flechas.

24 Porém o seu arco ficou firme,

e os seus braços continuaram fortes

pela força do Poderoso de Jacó,

pelo nome do Pastor, a Rocha de Israel.

25 O Deus do seu pai ajudará José,

o Todo-Poderoso lhe dará bênçãos —

bênçãos do alto céu,

bênçãos de águas que ficam

debaixo da terra,

bênçãos de muitos animais

e muitos filhos,

26 bênçãos de cereais e de flores,

bênçãos de montanhas antigas,

coisas deliciosas dos montes eternos.

Que todas essas bênçãos estejam

sobre a cabeça de José,

sobre a testa daquele que foi escolhido

entre os seus irmãos.

27 "Benjamim é como um lobo feroz;

de manhã devorará a vítima

e de tarde repartirá as sobras."

28 São essas as doze tribos de Israel, e foram essas as palavras que o pai disse aos seus filhos quando os abençoou; a cada um deu uma bênção especial.

29 Então Jacó deu aos filhos a seguinte ordem:

— Eu estou para morrer e me reunir com o meu povo no mundo dos mortos. Sepultem-me onde estão sepultados os meus antepassados, na caverna que fica nas terras de Efrom, o heteu, 30 em Macpela, a leste de Manre, no país de Canaã. Abraão comprou de Efrom essa caverna e o terreno onde ela fica, para ser a sepultura da família. 31 Ali estão sepultados Abraão e Sara, a sua mulher; Isaque e a sua mulher Rebeca; e ali eu sepultei Leia. 32 O terreno e a caverna foram comprados dos heteus.

33 Quando acabou de dar essa ordem aos filhos, Jacó deitou-se de novo na cama e morreu, indo reunir-se assim com o seu povo no mundo dos mortos.
