1 Rejoice not, O Israel! Exult not like the peoples; for you have played the harlot, forsaking your God. You have loved a harlot's hire upon all threshing floors.2 Threshing floor and winevat shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail them.3 They shall not remain in the land of the LORD; but E'phraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.4 They shall not pour libations of wine to the LORD; and they shall not please him with their sacrifices. Their bread shall be like mourners' bread; all who eat of it shall be defiled; for their bread shall be for their hunger only; it shall not come to the house of the LORD.5 What will you do on the day of appointed festival, and on the day of the feast of the LORD?6 For behold, they are going to Assyria; Egypt shall gather them, Memphis shall bury them. Nettles shall possess their precious things of silver; thorns shall be in their tents.7 The days of punishment have come, the days of recompense have come; Israel shall know it. The prophet is a fool, the man of the spirit is mad, because of your great iniquity and great hatred.8 The prophet is the watchman of E'phraim, the people of my God, yet a fowler's snare is on all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.9 They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gib'e-ah: he will remember their iniquity, he will punish their sins.10 Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree, in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they came to Ba'al-pe'or, and consecrated themselves to Ba'al, and became detestable like the thing they loved.11 E'phraim's glory shall fly away like a bird--no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!12 Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them till none is left. Woe to them when I depart from them!13 E'phraim's sons, as I have seen, are destined for a prey; E'phraim must lead forth his sons to slaughter.14 Give them, O LORD--what wilt thou give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.15 Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal; there I began to hate them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more; all their princes are rebels.16 E'phraim is stricken, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit. Even though they bring forth, I will slay their beloved children.17 My God will cast them off, because they have not hearkened to him; they shall be wanderers among the nations.

1 Povo de Israel, deixe de se alegrar, pare de fazer festas como os outros povos fazem. Vocês abandonaram a Deus e adoraram ídolos. Em todos os terreiros onde o trigo é malhado, vocês se venderam como prostitutas ao deus Baal e gostaram do pagamento que receberam dele. 2 Mas daqui a pouco não haverá trigo nem azeite, e faltará vinho. 3 O povo de Israel não ficará na terra de Deus, o Senhor, mas precisará voltar para o Egito e na Assíria comerá alimentos impuros . 4 Naqueles países, eles não poderão fazer ofertas de vinho ao Senhor, nem oferecer os sacrifícios de que ele gosta. A comida que comerem será como a que é servida num velório , e todos os que a comerem ficarão impuros. Não poderão apresentar ofertas de alimento no Templo do Senhor; só poderão comê-las. 5 E o que é que eles vão fazer quando chegarem os dias das festas realizadas em honra do Senhor? 6 Vão fugir para não serem destruídos, mas os egípcios os pegarão e os sepultarão na cidade de Mênfis. Os seus preciosos objetos de prata serão cobertos de espinheiros, e o mato tomará conta das suas casas. 7 Está chegando o dia do castigo, o dia em que Deus castigará o seu povo. E que o povo de Israel fique sabendo disso! Mas vocês dizem: "Esse profeta está maluco! Diz que é inspirado, mas é louco!" Vocês falam assim porque estão cheios de maldade e de ódio.

8 Deus me mandou como profeta para avisar o seu povo, mas em todos os lugares eles armam armadilhas para me pegar. Até no Templo de Deus eles me perseguem! 9 Eles se afundaram tanto no pecado quanto o povo que estava em Gibeá . Deus lembrará dos pecados deles e os castigará.

10 O Senhor Deus diz:

— Quando encontrei Israel pela primeira vez, fiquei alegre como quem acha uvas no deserto e, ao ver os antepassados de vocês, fiquei contente como quem vê os primeiros figos maduros. Mas, quando eles chegaram ao monte Peor, ali começaram a adorar o deus Baal e se tornaram tão nojentos como os ídolos que eles amaram. 11 A grandeza de Israel irá embora, voando como uma ave. Não nascerão mais crianças: as mulheres não ficarão grávidas e não darão à luz. 12 Ainda que criem filhos, eu os levarei embora; não deixarei nem um só. Ai desse povo quando eu me afastar dele! 13 Eu via Israel como se fosse a cidade de Tiro, plantada num lugar agradável; mas Israel levará os seus filhos para serem mortos.

14 Ó Senhor Deus, o que é que vais fazer com este povo? Faze com que as mulheres não possam ter filhos! E, se tiverem, seca o seu leite, para que não possam dar de mamar!

15 O Senhor Deus diz:

— Toda a maldade do povo de Israel começou na cidade de Gilgal, e foi ali que comecei a odiá-los. E, por causa dos seus pecados, eu os expulsarei da minha terra. Daqui em diante, não os amarei mais. Todos os seus chefes se revoltaram contra mim. 16 Israel está ferido; é como uma árvore que não dá frutas porque as suas raízes secaram. Mesmo que nasçam crianças, eu matarei esses filhos tão queridos.

17 O meu Deus rejeitará o seu povo porque eles não lhe obedecem. E eles andarão sem rumo entre as outras nações.
