1 After this Joseph was told, "Behold, your father is ill"; so he took with him his two sons, Manas'seh and E'phraim.2 And it was told to Jacob, "Your son Joseph has come to you"; then Israel summoned his strength, and sat up in bed.3 And Jacob said to Joseph, "God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,4 and said to me, `Behold, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.'5 And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; E'phraim and Manas'seh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are.6 And the offspring born to you after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.7 For when I came from Paddan, Rachel to my sorrow died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)."8 When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, "Who are these?"9 Joseph said to his father, "They are my sons, whom God has given me here." And he said, "Bring them to me, I pray you, that I may bless them."10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him; and he kissed them and embraced them.11 And Israel said to Joseph, "I had not thought to see your face; and lo, God has let me see your children also."12 Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.13 And Joseph took them both, E'phraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manas'seh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near him.14 And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it upon the head of E'phraim, who was the younger, and his left hand upon the head of Manas'seh, crossing his hands, for Manas'seh was the first-born.15 And he blessed Joseph, and said, "The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has led me all my life long to this day,16 the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and in them let my name be perpetuated, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."17 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of E'phraim, it displeased him; and he took his father's hand, to remove it from E'phraim's head to Manas'seh's head.18 And Joseph said to his father, "Not so, my father; for this one is the first-born; put your right hand upon his head."19 But his father refused, and said, "I know, my son, I know; he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; nevertheless his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations."20 So he blessed them that day, saying, "By you Israel will pronounce blessings, saying, `God make you as E'phraim and as Manas'seh'"; and thus he put E'phraim before Manas'seh.21 Then Israel said to Joseph, "Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you, and will bring you again to the land of your fathers.22 Moreover I have given to you rather than to your brothers one mountain slope which I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow."

1 Algum tempo depois disseram a José que o seu pai estava doente. Então José foi visitá-lo, levando consigo os seus dois filhos, Efraim e Manassés. 2 Alguém foi dizer a Jacó:

— O seu filho José veio visitá-lo.

Jacó fez um esforço e se sentou na cama. 3 Aí disse a José:

— O Deus Todo-Poderoso me apareceu na cidade de Luz , lá na terra de Canaã, e me abençoou. 4 Ele me disse: "Eu farei com que você tenha muitos filhos, e os seus descendentes formarão muitas nações. Eu darei esta terra aos seus descendentes para ser propriedade deles para sempre."

5 E Jacó continuou dizendo a José:

— Agora, os seus filhos Efraim e Manassés, que nasceram aqui no Egito antes de eu vir para cá, esses dois me pertencem. Efraim e Manassés são meus tanto como Rúben e Simeão. 6 Se você tiver outros filhos, eles serão seus e, por serem irmãos de Efraim e de Manassés, terão parte na herança deles. 7 Estou fazendo isso por causa de Raquel, a sua mãe. Nós estávamos voltando da Mesopotâmia, quando, para minha infelicidade, ela morreu no país de Canaã, pouco antes de chegarmos a Efrata. Eu a sepultei ali, na beira do caminho (Efrata é agora conhecida como Belém.).

8 Quando Jacó viu os filhos de José, perguntou:

— E esses, quem são?

9 — São os filhos que Deus me deu aqui no Egito — respondeu José.

Jacó disse:

— Ponha-os perto de mim para que eu lhes dê a minha bênção.

10 Por causa da velhice a vista de Jacó estava fraca, e ele não podia ver bem. José levou os rapazes para perto dele, e ele os abraçou e beijou. 11 Jacó disse a José:

— Eu pensei que nunca mais ia ver você, e agora Deus me deixou ver até os seus filhos.

12 Então José tirou os dois do colo do seu pai, ajoelhou-se e encostou o rosto no chão. 13 Em seguida pegou Efraim com a mão direita e Manassés com a mão esquerda e fez com que ficassem perto de Jacó. Dessa maneira Efraim ficou do lado esquerdo de Jacó, e Manassés, do seu lado direito. 14 Jacó estendeu os braços e cruzou-os, pondo a mão direita sobre a cabeça de Efraim, embora fosse o mais moço, e a mão esquerda sobre a cabeça de Manassés, que era o mais velho. 15 Em seguida deu a sua bênção a José, dizendo assim:

"Ó Deus, a quem os meus pais

Abraão e Isaque serviram,

abençoa estes rapazes.

Abençoa-os, ó Deus,

tu que me tens guiado como um pastor

durante toda a minha vida até hoje.

16 Que os abençoe o Anjo

que me tem livrado de todo mal!

Que o meu nome seja lembrado

por meio deles

e também o nome dos meus pais

Abraão e Isaque!

Que eles tenham muitos filhos

e muitos descendentes neste mundo!"

17 José não gostou quando viu o seu pai colocar a mão direita sobre a cabeça de Efraim; por isso pegou a mão dele para tirá-la da cabeça de Efraim e colocá-la sobre a de Manassés. 18 E explicou:

— Não, pai; assim não. Este aqui é o filho mais velho; ponha a mão direita sobre a cabeça dele.

19 Mas Jacó não quis e disse:

— Eu sei, filho, eu sei. Os descendentes de Manassés também serão um grande povo. Mas o irmão mais moço será mais importante do que ele, e os seus descendentes formarão muitas nações.

20 Desse modo Jacó os abençoou naquele dia, dizendo:

— Os israelitas usarão os nomes de vocês para dar a bênção. Eles vão dizer assim: "Que Deus faça com você como fez com Efraim e com Manassés."

Dessa maneira Jacó pôs Efraim antes de Manassés. 21 Aí disse a José:

— Como você está vendo, eu vou morrer. Mas Deus estará com vocês e os levará de volta para a terra dos seus antepassados. 22 Eu dou Siquém a você e não aos seus irmãos. Siquém é aquela região que tomei dos amorreus, lutando com a minha espada e o meu arco.
