1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, `You shall not eat of any tree of the garden'?"2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden;3 but God said, `You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'"4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die.5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate.7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.9 But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?"10 And he said, "I heard the sound of thee in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself."11 He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?"12 The man said, "The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate."13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent beguiled me, and I ate."14 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you."17 And to Adam he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, `You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life;18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return."20 The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them.22 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever"--23 therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken.24 He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

1 A cobra era o animal mais esperto que o Senhor Deus havia feito. Ela perguntou à mulher:

— É verdade que Deus mandou que vocês não comessem as frutas de nenhuma árvore do jardim?

2 A mulher respondeu:

— Podemos comer as frutas de qualquer árvore, 3 menos a fruta da árvore que fica no meio do jardim. Deus nos disse que não devemos comer dessa fruta, nem tocar nela. Se fizermos isso, morreremos.

4 Mas a cobra afirmou:

— Vocês não morrerão coisa nenhuma! 5 Deus disse isso porque sabe que, quando vocês comerem a fruta dessa árvore, os seus olhos se abrirão, e vocês serão como Deus, conhecendo o bem e o mal.

6 A mulher viu que a árvore era bonita e que as suas frutas eram boas de se comer. E ela pensou como seria bom ter entendimento. Aí apanhou uma fruta e comeu; e deu ao seu marido, e ele também comeu. 7 Nesse momento os olhos dos dois se abriram, e eles perceberam que estavam nus. Então costuraram umas folhas de figueira para usar como tangas.

8 Naquele dia, quando soprava o vento suave da tarde, o homem e a sua mulher ouviram a voz do Senhor Deus, que estava passeando pelo jardim. Então se esconderam dele, no meio das árvores. 9 Mas o Senhor Deus chamou o homem e perguntou:

— Onde é que você está?

10 O homem respondeu:

— Eu ouvi a tua voz, quando estavas passeando pelo jardim, e fiquei com medo porque estava nu. Por isso me escondi.

11 Aí Deus perguntou:

— E quem foi que lhe disse que você estava nu? Por acaso você comeu a fruta da árvore que eu o proibi de comer?

12 O homem disse:

— A mulher que me deste para ser a minha companheira me deu a fruta, e eu comi.

13 Então o Senhor Deus perguntou à mulher:

— Por que você fez isso?

A mulher respondeu:

— A cobra me enganou, e eu comi.

14 Então o Senhor Deus disse à cobra:

— Por causa do que você fez você será castigada. Entre todos os animais só você receberá esta maldição: de hoje em diante você vai andar se arrastando pelo chão e vai comer o pó da terra. 15 Eu farei com que você e a mulher sejam inimigas uma da outra, e assim também serão inimigas a sua descendência e a descendência dela. Esta esmagará a sua cabeça, e você picará o calcanhar da descendência dela.

16 Para a mulher Deus disse:

— Vou aumentar o seu sofrimento na gravidez, e com muita dor você dará à luz filhos. Apesar disso, você terá desejo de estar com o seu marido, e ele a dominará.

17 E para Adão Deus disse o seguinte:

— Você fez o que a sua mulher disse e comeu a fruta da árvore que eu o proibi de comer. Por causa do que você fez, a terra será maldita. Você terá de trabalhar duramente a vida inteira a fim de que a terra produza alimento suficiente para você. 18 Ela lhe dará mato e espinhos, e você terá de comer ervas do campo. 19 Terá de trabalhar no pesado e suar para fazer com que a terra produza algum alimento; isso até que você volte para a terra, pois dela você foi formado. Você foi feito de terra e vai virar terra outra vez.

20 O homem pôs na sua mulher o nome de Eva por ser ela a mãe de todos os seres humanos. 21 E o Senhor Deus fez roupas de peles de animais para Adão e a sua mulher se vestirem.

22 Então o Senhor Deus disse o seguinte:

— Agora o homem se tornou como um de nós, pois conhece o bem e o mal. Ele não deve comer a fruta da árvore da vida e viver para sempre.

23 Por isso o Senhor Deus expulsou o homem do jardim do Éden e fez com que ele cultivasse a terra da qual havia sido formado. 24 Deus expulsou o homem e no lado leste do jardim pôs os querubins e uma espada de fogo que dava voltas em todas as direções. Deus fez isso para que ninguém chegasse perto da árvore da vida.
