1 Fünfundzwanzig Jahre alt war Amazia, als er König ward, und regierte neunundzwanzig Jahre lang zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Joaddan, von Jerusalem.

2 Und er tat, was recht war in den Augen des HERRN, doch nicht von ganzem Herzen.

3 Als ihm nun das Königreich gesichert war, tötete er seine Knechte, welche seinen königlichen Vater erschlagen hatten.

4 Aber ihre Söhne tötete er nicht, sondern tat, wie geschrieben steht im Gesetzbuche Moses, da der HERR gebietet und spricht: Die Väter sollen nicht für die Söhne und die Söhne nicht für die Väter sterben, sondern ein jeder soll um seiner eigenen Sünde willen sterben!

5 Und Amazia brachte Juda zusammen und stellte sie auf nach den Vaterhäusern, nach den Obersten über die Tausendschaften und über die Hundertschaften, von ganz Juda und Benjamin, und musterte sie, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, und fand ihrer 300000 Auserlesene, die in den Krieg ziehen und Speer und Schild handhaben konnten.

6 Dazu dingte er aus Israel 100000 starke Kriegsleute um hundert Talente Silber.

7 Aber ein Mann Gottes kam zu ihm und sprach: O König, laß das Heer Israels nicht mit dir kommen; denn der HERR ist nicht mit Israel, er ist nicht mit den Kindern Ephraim;

8 sondern gehe du hin und mache, daß du selbst stark genug bist zum Kampf! Gott möchte dich sonst zu Fall bringen vor dem Feind; denn bei Gott steht die Kraft, zu helfen und zu stürzen.

9 Amazia sprach zu dem Manne Gottes: Was wird dann aber aus den hundert Talenten, die ich den israelitischen Truppen gegeben habe? Der Mann Gottes sprach: Der HERR hat dir noch mehr zu geben als nur das!

10 Da sonderte Amazia seine Leute ab von den Truppen, die aus Ephraim zu ihm gekommen waren, und ließ sie an ihren Ort hingehen. Da ergrimmte ihr Zorn sehr wider Juda, und sie kehrten in glühendem Zorn wieder heim.

11 Amazia aber ermannte sich und führte sein Volk aus und zog in das Salztal und schlug von den Kindern Seir zehntausend Mann.

12 Und die Kinder Juda fingen ihrer zehntausend lebendig, führten sie auf eine Felsenspitze und stürzten sie von der Felsenspitze hinunter, daß sie alle zerschmettert wurden.

13 Aber die Kriegsleute, welche Amazia zurückgeschickt hatte, daß sie nicht mit ihm in den Krieg zögen, fielen in die Städte Judas ein, von Samaria bis gen Beth-Horon, erschlugen daselbst dreitausend Mann und machten große Beute.

14 Als aber Amazia von der Schlacht der Edomiter heimkehrte, brachte er die Götter der Kinder von Seir mit und stellte sie für sich als Götter auf und betete vor ihnen an und räucherte ihnen.

15 Da entbrannte der Zorn des HERRN über Amazia; und er sandte einen Propheten zu ihm, der sprach zu ihm: Warum suchst du die Götter des Volkes, die ihr Volk nicht von deiner Hand errettet haben?

16 Als dieser aber so zu ihm redete, sprach Amazia zu ihm: Hat man dich zum Ratgeber des Königs gemacht? Halt inne; warum willst du geschlagen sein? Da hielt der Prophet inne und sprach: Ich merke wohl, daß Gott beschlossen hat, dich zu verderben, weil du solches getan und meinem Rat nicht gehorcht hast!

17 Und Amazia, der König von Juda, beriet sich und sandte hin zu Joas, dem Sohn des Joahas, des Sohnes Jehus, dem König von Israel, und ließ ihm sagen: Wir wollen einander ins Angesicht sehen!

18 Aber Joas, der König von Israel, sandte zu Amazia, dem König von Juda, und ließ ihm sagen: Der Dornstrauch am Libanon sandte zur Zeder am Libanon und ließ ihr sagen: Gib deine Tochter meinem Sohn zum Weibe! Aber das Wild am Libanon lief über den Dornstrauch und zertrat ihn.

19 Du aber denkst, du habest die Edomiter geschlagen, und dein Herz verführt dich zum Stolz. Bleibe du jetzt daheim! Warum willst du das Schicksal herausfordern, daß du zu Fall kommst und Juda mit dir?

20 Aber Amazia gehorchte nicht; denn es war von Gott so gefügt, um sie in die Hand der Feinde zu geben, weil sie die Götter der Edomiter gesucht hatten.

21 Da zog Joas, der König von Israel, herauf, und sie sahen sich ins Angesicht, er und Amazia, der König von Juda, zu Beth-Semes, das zu Juda gehört.

22 Aber Juda ward vor Israel geschlagen, und sie flohen, ein jeder in seine Hütte.

23 Amazia aber, den König von Juda, den Sohn des Joas, des Sohnes des Joahas, fing Joas, der König von Israel, zu Beth-Semes und brachte ihn gen Jerusalem; und er riß die Mauer von Jerusalem ein, vom Tor Ephraim bis zum Ecktor, auf vierhundert Ellen Länge.

24 Und er nahm alles Gold und Silber und alle Geräte, die im Hause Gottes bei Obed-Edom vorhanden waren, auch die Schätze im Hause des Königs, dazu Geiseln; dann kehrte er nach Samaria zurück.

25 Aber Amazia, der Sohn des Joas, der König von Juda, lebte nach dem Tode Joas', des Sohnes Joahas', des Königs von Israel, noch fünfzehn Jahre lang.

26 Die übrigen Geschichten Amazias aber, die früheren und die späteren, siehe, sind die nicht aufgezeichnet im Buch der Könige von Juda und Israel?

27 Und seit der Zeit, da Amazia von dem HERRN abwich, bestand zu Jerusalem eine Verschwörung gegen ihn. Er aber floh nach Lachis; da sandten sie ihm nach gen Lachis und töteten ihn daselbst.

28 Man brachte ihn aber auf Pferden und begrub ihn bei seinen Vätern in der Hauptstadt Judas.

1 A son of twenty and five years hath Amaziah reigned, and twenty and nine years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother [is] Jehoaddan of Jerusalem,

2 and he doth that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah -- only, not with a perfect heart.

3 And it cometh to pass, when the kingdom hath been strong upon him, that he slayeth his servants, those smiting the king his father,

4 and their sons he hath not put to death, but [did] as is written in the law, in the book of Moses, whom Jehovah commanded, saying, `Fathers do not die for sons, and sons die not for fathers, but each for his own sin they die.`

5 And Amaziah gathereth Judah, and appointeth them, according to the house of the fathers, for heads of the thousands, and for heads of the hundreds, for all Judah and Benjamin; and he inspecteth them from a son of twenty years and upward, and findeth them three hundred thousand chosen ones, going forth to the host, holding spear and target.

6 And he hireth out of Israel a hundred thousand mighty ones of valour, with a hundred talents of silver;

7 and a man of God hath come in unto him, saying, `O king, the host of Israel doth not go with thee; for Jehovah is not with Israel -- all the sons of Ephraim;

8 but if thou art going -- do [it], be strong for battle, God doth cause thee to stumble before an enemy, for there is power in God to help, and to cause to stumble.`

9 And Amaziah saith to the man of God, `And what -- to do for the hundred talents that I have given to the troop of Israel?` And the man of God saith, `Jehovah hath more to give to thee than this.`

10 And Amaziah separateth them -- for the troop that hath come in unto him from Ephraim to go to their own place, and their anger doth burn mightily against Judah, and they turn back to their place in the heat of anger.

11 And Amaziah hath strengthened himself, and leadeth his people, and goeth to the Valley of Salt, and smiteth the sons of Seir -- ten thousand.

12 And ten thousand alive have the sons of Judah taken captive, and they bring them to the top of the rock, and cast them from the top of the rock, and all of them have been broken.

13 And the sons of the troop that Amaziah hath sent back from going with him to battle -- they rush against cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-Horon, and smite of them three thousand, and seize much prey.

14 And it cometh to pass, after the coming in of Amaziah from smiting the Edomites, that he bringeth in the gods of the sons of Seir, and establisheth them to him for gods, and before them doth bow himself, and to them he maketh perfume.

15 And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Amaziah, and He sendeth unto him a prophet, and he saith unto him, `Why hast thou sought the gods of the people that have not delivered their people out of thy hand?`

16 And it cometh to pass, in his speaking unto him, that he saith to him, `For a counsellor to the king have we appointed thee? cease for thee; why do they smite thee?` And the prophet ceaseth, and saith, `I have known that God hath counselled to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened to my counsel.`

17 And Amaziah king of Judah taketh counsel, and sendeth unto Joash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying,

18 `Come, we look one another in the face.` And Joash king of Israel sendeth unto Amaziah king of Judah, saying, `The thorn that [is] in Lebanon hath sent unto the cedar that [is] in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son for a wife; and pass by doth a beast of the field that [is] in Lebanon, and treadeth down the thorn.

19 Thou hast said, Lo, I have smitten Edom; and thy heart hath lifted thee up to boast; now, abide in thy house, why dost thou stir thyself up in evil, that thou hast fallen, thou, and Judah with thee?`

20 And Amaziah hath not hearkened, for from God it [is] in order to give them into hand, because they have sought the gods of Edom;

21 and go up doth Joash king of Israel, and they look one another in the face, he and Amaziah king of Judah, in Beth-Shemesh, that [is] Judah`s,

22 and Judah is smitten before Israel, and they flee -- each to his tents.

23 And Amaziah king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, hath Joash king of Israel caught in Beth-Shemesh, and bringeth him in to Jerusalem, and breaketh down in the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the gate of the corner, four hundred cubits,

24 and [taketh] all the gold, and the silver, and all the vessels that are found in the house of God with Obed-Edom, and the treasures of the house of the king, and the sons of the pledges, and turneth back to Samaria.

25 And Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, liveth after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years;

26 and the rest of the matters of Amaziah, the first and the last, lo, are they not written on the books of the kings of Judah and Israel?

27 And from the time that Amaziah hath turned aside from after Jehovah -- they make a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fleeth to Lachish, and they send after him to Lachish, and put him to death there,

28 and lift him up on the horses, and bury him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
