1 Ahas war zwanzig Jahre alt, als er König ward, und regierte sechzehn Jahre lang zu Jerusalem; aber er tat nicht, was recht war in den Augen des HERRN, wie sein Vater David,

2 sondern wandelte in den Wegen der Könige von Israel, und machte sogar gegossene Bilder für die Baale.

3 Und er räucherte im Tale des Sohnes Hinnoms und verbrannte seine Söhne mit Feuer, nach den Greueln der Heiden, welche der HERR vor den Kindern Israel vertrieben hatte.

4 Und er opferte und räucherte auf den Höhen und auf den Hügeln und unter allen grünen Bäumen.

5 Darum gab ihn der HERR, sein Gott, in die Hand des Königs der Syrer, die ihn schlugen und von den Seinigen eine große Menge hinwegführten und gen Damaskus brachten. Auch ward er in die Hand des Königs von Israel gegeben, der brachte ihm eine große Niederlage bei.

6 Denn Pekach, der Sohn Remaljas, machte in Juda an einem Tage 120000 Mann nieder, lauter tapfere Leute, weil sie den HERRN, den Gott ihrer Väter, verlassen hatten.

7 Zudem erschlug Sichri, ein ephraimitischer Held, Maaseja, den Sohn des Königs, und Asrikan, den Haushofmeister, und Elkana, den Nächsten nach dem König.

8 Und die Kinder Israel führten von ihren Brüdern 200000 Frauen, Söhne und Töchter gefangen hinweg und machten dazu große Beute und brachten die Beute nach Samaria.

9 Es war aber daselbst ein Prophet des HERRN, der hieß Oded; der ging hinaus, dem Heer entgegen, das gen Samaria kam, und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, weil der HERR, der Gott eurer Väter, über Juda zornig ist, hat er sie in eure Hand gegeben; und ihr habt sie mit einer Wut, die zum Himmel schreit, niedergemetzelt.

10 Und nun gedenket ihr die Kinder Judas und Jerusalems so niederzutreten, daß sie eure Knechte und Mägde werden sollen? Was habt ihr denn anders als Schulden bei dem HERRN, eurem Gott?

11 So gehorchet mir nun und schicket die Gefangenen wieder zurück, die ihr von euren Brüdern weggeführt habt; denn der grimmige Zorn des HERRN lastet auf euch!

12 Da standen einige Männer von den Häuptern der Kinder Ephraim auf, nämlich Asaja, der Sohn Johanans, Berechja, der Sohn Messilemots, Jehiskia, der Sohn Sallums, und Amasa, der Sohn Hadlais, denen entgegen, welche vom Feldzug zurückkehrten,

13 und sprachen zu ihnen: Ihr sollt die Gefangenen nicht hierher bringen, denn das würde uns zur Schuld vor dem HERRN gereichen! Ihr gedenket unsre Sünde und Schuld zu vermehren; und doch ist unsre Schuld schon groß genug und der grimmige Zorn über Israel!

14 Da ließen die Krieger die Gefangenen und die Beute vor den Obersten und der ganzen Gemeinde frei.

15 Die Männer aber, die mit Namen genannt sind, machten sich auf und nahmen sich der Gefangenen an und bekleideten alle, die unter ihnen nackt waren, mit Kleidern von der Beute, zogen ihnen Schuhe an und gaben ihnen zu essen und zu trinken und salbten sie und führten alle, die zu schwach waren, auf Eseln und brachten sie gen Jericho, zur Palmenstadt, in die Nähe ihrer Brüder, und kehrten dann wieder nach Samaria zurück.

16 Zu jener Zeit sandte der König Ahas Botschaft zu den Königen von Assyrien, daß sie ihm helfen sollten.

17 Auch die Edomiter waren wieder gekommen und hatten Juda geschlagen und Gefangene gemacht.

18 Dazu fielen die Philister in die Städte der Ebene und in den Süden von Juda ein und eroberten Beth-Semes, Ajalon, Gederot und Socho mit seinen Dörfern, Timna mit seinen Dörfern und Gimso mit seinen Dörfern und wohnten darin.

19 Denn der HERR demütigte Juda, um Ahas willen, des Königs von Israel, weil er keine Zucht übte in Juda und sich an dem HERRN schwer verging.

20 Es kam nun zwar Tiglat-Pilneser, der König von Assyrien, zu ihm; aber er bedrängte ihn und stärkte ihn nicht.

21 Denn Ahas beraubte das Haus des HERRN und das Haus des Königs und die Fürsten und gab alles dem König von Assyrien; aber es half ihm nichts.

22 Ja, zu der Zeit, als er bedrängt ward, versündigte er sich an dem HERRN, er, der König Ahas!

23 Er opferte nämlich den Göttern von Damaskus, die ihn geschlagen hatten, indem er sprach: Weil die Götter der Könige von Syrien ihnen helfen, so will ich ihnen opfern, damit sie mir auch helfen! Aber sie gereichten ihm und ganz Israel zum Fall.

24 Und Ahas nahm die Geräte des Hauses Gottes weg und zerbrach die Geräte des Hauses Gottes und verschloß die Türen am Hause des HERRN und machte sich Altäre an allen Ecken zu Jerusalem.

25 Und in jeder einzelnen Stadt Judas machte er Höhen, um andern Göttern zu räuchern, und reizte den HERRN, den Gott seiner Väter, zum Zorn.

26 Seine übrigen Geschichten aber und alle seine Wege, die früheren und die späteren, die sind aufgezeichnet im Buch der Könige von Juda und Israel.

27 Und Ahas legte sich zu seinen Vätern, und man begrub ihn in der Stadt, zu Jerusalem; denn man bestattete ihn nicht in den Gräbern der Könige Israels. Und sein Sohn Hiskia ward König an seiner Statt.

1 A son of twenty years [is] Ahaz in his reigning, and sixteen years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and he hath not done that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah, as David his father,

2 and walketh in the ways of the kings of Israel, and also, molten images hath made for Baalim,

3 and himself hath made perfume in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burneth his sons with fire according to the abominations of the nations that Jehovah dispossessed from the presence of the sons of Israel,

4 and sacrificeth and maketh perfume in high places, and on the heights, and under every green tree.

5 And Jehovah his God giveth him into the hand of the king of Aram, and they smite him, and take captive from him a great captivity, and bring [them] in to Damascus, and also into the hand of the king of Israel he hath been given, and he smiteth him -- a great smiting.

6 And Pekah son of Remaliah slayeth in Judah a hundred and twenty thousand in one day (the whole [are] sons of valour), because of their forsaking Jehovah, God of their fathers.

7 And Zichri, a mighty one of Ephraim, slayeth Maaseiah son of the king, and Azrikam leader of the house, and Elkanah second to the king.

8 And the sons of Israel take captive of their brethren, two hundred thousand, wives, sons and daughters, and also much spoil they have seized from them, and they bring in the spoil to Samaria.

9 And there hath been there a prophet of Jehovah (Oded [is] his name), and he goeth out before the host that hath come in to Samaria, and saith to them, `Lo, in the fury of Jehovah God of your fathers against Judah, He hath given them into your hand, and ye slay among them in rage -- unto the heavens it hath come;

10 and now, sons of Judah and Jerusalem ye are saying to subdue for men-servants and for maid-servants to you; but are there not with you causes of guilt before Jehovah your God?

11 and now, hear me, and send back the captives whom ye have taken captive of your brethren, for the heat of the anger of Jehovah [is] upon you.`

12 And certain of the heads of the sons of Ephraim (Azariah son of Johanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai), rise up against those coming in from the host,

13 and say to them, `Ye do not bring in the captives hither, for, to guilt against Jehovah on us, ye are saying to add unto our sin and unto our guilt? for abundant [is] the guilt we have, and the fierceness of anger on Israel.`

14 And the armed men leave the captives and the prey before the heads and all the assembly;

15 and the men who have been expressed by name rise and take hold on the captives, and all their naked ones they have clothed from the spoil, yea, they clothe them, and shoe them, and cause them to eat and drink, and anoint them, and lead them on asses, even every feeble one, and bring them in to Jericho, the city of palms, near their brethren, and turn back to Samaria.

16 At that time hath king Ahaz sent unto the king of Asshur to give help to him;

17 and again the Edomites have come, and smite in Judah, and take captive a captivity.

18 And the Philistines have rushed against the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and capture Beth-Shemesh, and Aijalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho and its villages, and Timnah and its villages, and Gimzo and its villages, and dwell there,

19 for Jehovah hath humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he made free with Judah, even to commit a trespass against Jehovah.

20 And Tilgath-Pilneser king of Asshur cometh in unto him, and doth distress him, and hath not strengthened him,

21 though Ahaz hath taken a portion [out] of the house of Jehovah, and [out] of the house of the king, and of the princes, and giveth to the king of Asshur, yet it is no help to him.

22 And in the time of his distress -- he addeth to trespass against Jehovah, (this king Ahaz),

23 and he sacrificeth to the gods of Damascus -- those smiting him, and saith, `Because the gods of the kings of Aram are helping them, to them I sacrifice, and they help me,` and they have been to him to cause him to stumble, and to all Israel.

24 And Ahaz gathereth the vessels of the house of God, and cutteth in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shutteth the doors of the house of Jehovah, and maketh to himself altars in every corner in Jerusalem.

25 And in every city and city of Judah he hath made high places to make perfume to other gods, and provoketh Jehovah, God of his fathers.

26 And the rest of his matters, and all his ways, the first and the last, lo, they are written on the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

27 And Ahaz lieth with his fathers, and they bury him in the city, in Jerusalem, but have not brought him in to the graves of the kings of Israel, and reign doth Hezekiah his son in his stead.
