1 Guarda o teu pé quando fores à casa de Deus. Chegar-se para ouvir é melhor do que oferecer sacrifícios de tolos, porque não sabem que fazem mal.2 Não abras a boca precipitadamente, e não se apresse o teu coração a proferir palavra alguma diante de Deus; porque Deus está no céu, e tu sobre a terra. Portanto sejam poucas as tuas palavras.3 Pois da muita ocupação em negócios nascem os sonhos, e da multidão de palavras a voz do tolo.4 Quando fizeres um voto a Deus, não tardes em o cumprir; porque não se agrada de tolos. Cumpre o voto que fazes.5 Melhor é não fazeres voto, do que fazê-lo sem o cumprir.6 Não consintas que a tua boca faça pecar a tua carne, nem digas na presença do anjo que foi um erro; porque se iraria Deus contra a tua voz e destruiria a obra das tuas mãos?7 Pois este é o resultado da multidão de sonhos, vaidades e muitas palavras; tu, porém, teme a Deus.8 Se vires a opressão do pobre e a perversão violenta do direito e da justiça numa província, não te maravilhes do caso. Pois quem está altamente colocado tem superior que o vigia, e sobre ambos ainda há quem é mais elevado.9 Mas no entretanto o proveito da terra é para todos; o próprio rei serve-se do campo.10 Quem ama a prata, não será saciado pela prata; nem o que ama a riqueza, pelo ganho: também isto é vaidade.11 Quando se multiplicam o bens, multiplicam-se os que comem; e que vantagem tem o possuidor, senão a de vê-los com os seus olhos?12 Doce é o sono do trabalhador, quer coma ele pouco quer muito; mas a saciedade do rico não o deixará dormir.13 Há um grave mal que tenho visto debaixo do sol: as riquezas que o seu dono guarda para o próprio dano.14 Essas riquezas perecem numa empresa desastrosa, e ao filho que gerou, nada lhe fica na mão.15 Como nu saiu do ventre de sua mãe, assim nu há de voltar como veio, e do seu trabalho não receberá coisa alguma que possa levar na mão.16 Isto é um grave mal: justamente como veio, assim há de ir; e que proveito lhe advém de trabalhar para o vento?17 Em todos os seus dias ele come às escuras, e é muito vexado, e tem enfermidades e indignação.18 Eis o que vi: boa e bela coisa é comer alguém e beber e gozar o bem de todo o trabalho, com que se afadiga debaixo do sol, por todos os dias da vida que Deus lhe deu. Pois esta é a sua porção.19 Quanto a todo o homem, a quem Deus deu riquezas e fazendas, e lhe concedeu o poder de comer delas, de receber a sua porção e de se regozijar no seu trabalho: isto é para tal o dom de Deus.20 Pois não pensará muito nos dias da sua vida, porque Deus lhe enche de alegria o coração.

1 Speak not any thing rashly, and let not thy heart be hasty to utter a word before God. For God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.2 Dreams follow many cares: and in many words shall be found folly.3 If thou hast vowed any thing to God, defer not to pay it: for an unfaithful and foolish promise displeaseth him: but whatsoever thou hast vowed, pay it.4 And it is much better not to vow, than after a vow not to perform the things promised.5 Give not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin: and say not before the angel: There is no providence: lest God be angry at thy words, and destroy all the works of thy hands.6 Where there are many dreams, there are many vanities, and words without number: but do thou fear God.7 If thou shalt see the oppressions of the poor, and violent judgments, and justice perverted in the province, wonder not at this matter: for he that is high hath another higher, and there are others still higher than these:8 Moreover there is the king that reigneth over all the land subject to him.9 A covetous man shall not be satisfied with money: and he that loveth riches shall reap no fruit from them: so this also is vanity.10 Where there are great riches, there are also many to eat them. And what doth it profit the owner, but that he seeth the riches with his eyes?11 Sleep is sweet to a labouring man, whether he eat lttle or much: but the fulness of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.12 There is also another grievous evil, which I have seen under the sun: riches kept to the hurt of the owner.13 For they are lost with very great affliction: he hath begotten a son, who shall be in extremity of want.14 As he came forth naked from his mother's womb, so shall he return, and shall take nothing away with him of his labour.15 A most deplorable evil: as he came, so shall he return. What then doth it profit him that he hath laboured for the wind?16 All the days of his life he eateth in darkness, and in many cares, and in misery, and sorrow.17 This therefore hath seemed good to me, that a man should eat and drink, and enjoy the fruit of his labour, wherewith he hath laboured under the sun, all the days of his life, which God hath given him: and this is his portion.18 And every man to whom God hath given riches, and substance, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to enjoy his portion, and to rejoice of his labour: this is the gift of God.19 For he shall not much remember the days of his life, because God entertaineth his heart with delight,
