1 Pois a tudo isto apliquei o meu coração, fiz de tudo isto o objeto do meu exame e vi que os justos e os sábios, e as suas obras, estão nas mãos de Deus; se é amor ou se é ódio, não o sabe o homem. Tudo lhe pode sobrevir.2 Todas as coisas sucedem igualmente a todos: o mesmo sucede ao justo e ao perverso, ao bom e ao puro e ao impuro; ao que oferece sacrifícios e ao que não os oferece. Como é o bom, assim é o pecador; e aquele que jura como aquele que teme o juramento.3 Este é um mal em tudo o que se faz debaixo do sol; a todos sucede o mesmo. Também o coração dos filhos é cheio de maldade, e a loucura acha-se no seu coração durante a sua vida, e depois vão ter com os mortos.4 Para aquele que está na companhia dos vivos, há esperança; porque mais vale um cão vivo do que um leão morto.5 Pois os vivos sabem que hão de morrer; mas os mortos não sabem coisa alguma, nem tão pouco têm daí em diante recompensa, porque a sua memória fica entregue ao esquecimento.6 Tanto o seu amor como o seu ódio, e a sua inveja, pereceram; nem têm eles daí em diante parte para sempre em coisa alguma que se faz debaixo do sol.7 Vai, come o teu pão com alegria, e bebe o teu vinho com coração contente; pois há muito que Deus se agrada das tuas obras.8 Sejam sempre brancos os teus vestidos, e não falte óleo sobre a tua cabeça.9 Goza a vida com a mulher que amas, todos os dias da tua vida vã que ele te deu debaixo do sol, por todos os dias da tua vaidade. Pois essa é a tua porção na vida e no teu trabalho com que te afadigas debaixo do sol.10 Tudo o que alcançar a tua mão para fazer, faze-o com tuas forças, porque na sepultura para onde vais, não há obra, nem engenho, nem conhecimento, nem sabedoria.11 Eu vi ainda debaixo do sol que a corrida não é para os ligeiros, nem a batalha para os fortes, nem o pão para os sábios, nem as riquezas para os inteligentes, nem o favor para os homens de destreza; mas tudo depende do tempo e do acaso.12 Pois o homem não sabe a sua hora. Como os peixes que são apanhados numa rede cruel, e como os pássaros que são presos no laço, assim os filhos dos homens são enlaçados no tempo mau, quando este dá sobre eles de improviso.13 Vi também este sinal de sabedoria debaixo do sol, que me pareceu grande.14 Houve uma pequena cidade, e nela se achavam poucos homens; veio contra ela um grande rei, cercou-a e levantou contra ela grandes baluartes.15 Ora achou-se nela um homem pobre e sábio, que pela sua sabedoria livrou a cidade, contudo ninguém se lembrou mais daquele homem pobre.16 Então disse eu: A sabedoria é melhor do que a força; todavia a sabedoria do pobre é desprezada, e as suas palavras não são ouvidas.17 As palavras dos sábios, proferidas no meio de silêncio, são mais ouvidas do que o clamor de quem governa entre os tolos.18 A sabedoria é melhor do que as armas de guerra, porém um só pecador faz muito dano ao bem.

1 All these things have I considered in my heart, that I might carefully understand them: there are just men and wise men, and their works are in the hand of God: and yet man knoweth not whether he be worthy of love, or hatred:2 But all things are kept uncertain for the time to come, because all things equally happen to the just and to the wicked, to the good and to the evil, to the clean and to the unclean, to him that offereth victims, and to him that despiseth sacrifices. As the good is, so also is the sinner: as the perjured, so he also that sweareth truth.3 This is a very great evil among all things that are done under the sun, that the same things happen to all men: whereby also the hearts of the children of men are filled with evil, and with contempt while they live, and afterwards they shall be brought down to hell.4 There is no man that liveth always, or that hopeth for this: a living dog is better than a dead lion.5 For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know nothing more, neither have they a reward any more: for the memory of them is forgotten.6 Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy are all perished, neither have they any part in this world, and in the work that is done under the sun.7 Go then, and eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with gladness: because thy works please God.8 At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oil depart from thy head.9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest, all the days of thy unsteady life, which are given to thee under the sun, all the time of thy vanity: for this is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherewith thou labourest under the sun.10 Whatsoever thy hand is able to do, do it earnestly: for neither work, nor reason, nor wisdom, nor knowledge shall be in hell, whither thou art hastening.11 I turned me to another thing, and I saw that under the sun, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the learned, nor favour to the skilful: but time and chance in all.12 Man knoweth not his own end: but as fishes are taken with the hook, and as birds are caught with the snare, so men are taken in the evil time, when it shall suddenly come upon them.13 This wisdom also I have seen under the sun, and it seemed to me to be very great:14 A little city, and few men in it: there came against it a great king, and invested it, and built bulwarks round about it, and the siege was perfect.15 Now there was found in it a man poor and wise, and he delivered the city by his wisdom, and no man afterward remembered that poor man.16 And I said that wisdom is better than strength: how then is the wisdom of the poor man slighted, and his words not heard?17 The words of the wise are heard in silence, more than the cry of a prince among fools.18 Better is wisdom, than weapons of war: and he that shall offend in one, shall lose many good things.
