1 Veio a mim a palavra de Jeová, dizendo:2 Vai, e clama aos ouvidos de Jerusalém: Assim diz Jeová: A favor de ti lembro-me da beneficência da tua mocidade, do amor dos teus desposórios: de como me seguiste no deserto, numa terra que não estava semeada.3 Israel era santidade para Jeová, primícias da sua novidade; todos os que o devoram, serão tidos por culpados; sobre eles virá o mal, diz Jeová.4 Ouvi a palavra de Jeová, ó casa de Jacó, e todas as famílias da casa de Israel;5 assim diz Jeová: Que injustiça acharam em mim vossos pais, visto que se alongaram de mim e foram após a vaidade e se tornaram vãos?6 Eles não disseram: Onde está Jeová, que nos fez subir da terra do Egito, e que nos conduziu pelo deserto, por uma terra de ermos e de covas, por uma terra de fome e de escuridão, por uma terra pela qual ninguém passava?7 Eu vos introduzi numa terra de jardins, para que comesseis os seus frutos e o seu bem; mas quando entrastes, profanastes a minha terra, e fizestes a minha herança uma abominação.8 Os sacerdotes não disseram: Onde está Jeová? e os que tratavam da lei, não me conheceram; também os regentes prevaricaram contra mim, e os profetas profetizaram em nome de Baal, e andaram após o que de nada aproveita.9 Pelo que ainda contenderei convosco, diz Jeová, e contenderei com os filhos de vossos filhos.10 Pois passai às ilhas de Quitim, e vede; mandai a Quedar, e considerai bem; vede se jamais sucedeu coisa semelhante.11 Acaso trocou alguma nação os seus deuses, que contudo não são deuses? mas o meu povo trocou a sua glória por aquilo que de nada aproveita.12 Pasmai, céus, sobre isto, e espantai-vos, e sede sobremaneira desolados, diz Jeová.13 Pois dois males fez o meu povo: deixaram-me a mim, fonte de águas vivas, e cavaram para si cisternas, cisternas rotas, que não retêm as águas.14 Acaso é Israel um servo? acaso é ele um escravo nascido em casa? porque logo veio a ser presa?15 Sobre ele rugiram os leões novos, e levantaram a sua voz; e fizeram a terra dele uma desolação: as suas cidades estão queimadas, sem que haja quem nelas habite.16 Também os filhos de Nofe e de Tafnes se apascentam sobre o alto da tua cabeça.17 Porventura não te aconteceu isto, por teres deixado a Jeová teu Deus, quando ele te guiava pelo caminho?18 Agora que tens tu com o caminho do Egito, para beberes as águas de Sior? ou que tens tu com o caminho da Assíria, para beberes as águas do Rio?19 A tua malícia te castigará, e as tuas apostasias te repreenderão. Sabe e vê que má e amarga coisa é o teres deixado a Jeová teu Deus, e o não haver em ti temor de mim, diz o Senhor, Jeová dos exércitos.20 Há muito que quebraste o teu jugo e rompeste as tuas ataduras, e disseste: Não servirei. Pois sobre todo o outeiro alto e debaixo de toda a árvore frondosa te deitaste, fazendo-te prostituta.21 Todavia eu te plantei como uma vide escolhida, toda semente da verdade; como, pois, te tornaste para mim numa planta degenerada de vida estranha?22 Embora te laves com salitre, e uses muito sabão, contudo a tua iniqüidade fica registrada diante de mim, diz o Senhor Jeová.23 Como podes dizer: Não estou manchada, não tenho andado após os baalins? vê o teu caminho no vale, conhece o que tens feito: és como dromedária ligeira que anda torcendo os seus caminhos;24 como asna silvestre, acostumada ao deserto, que sorve o vento na sua paixão; quem a pode impedir de satisfazer o seu desejo? Todos os que a buscarem, não se fatigarão; no mês dela, achá-la-ão.25 Guarda o teu pé da nudez, e a tua garganta da sede. Mas tu disseste: Não há esperança, não; porque amei os estranhos, e após eles andarei.26 Como o ladrão fica envergonhado quando o apanham, assim ficam envergonhados os da casa de Israel, eles, os seus reis, os seus príncipes, os seus sacerdotes e os seus profetas.27 Eles dizem a um pau: Tu és meu pai; e a uma pedra: Tu me deste à luz. Pois me voltaram as costas, e não o rosto; porém no tempo da sua tribulação dirão: Levanta-te e salva-nos.28 Mas onde estão os teus deuses que fizeste para ti? levantem-se eles, se te podem salvar no tempo da tua tribulação; pois os teus deuses, ó Judá, são tantos em número como as tuas cidades.29 Por que quereis contender comigo? todos vós transgredistes contra mim, diz Jeová.30 Em vão castiguei vossos filhos; eles não receberam a correção: a vossa espada devorou os vossos profetas, como um leão destruidor.31 Ó geração, vede vós a palavra de Jeová. Porventura tenho eu sido para Israel um deserto? ou uma terra de escuridão? porque, pois, diz o meu povo: Andamos à vontade, não tornaremos mais para ti?32 Pode, porventura, a donzela esquecer-se dos seus adornos, ou a noiva do seu cinto? mas o meu povo esqueceu-se de mim por dias que não têm número.33 Como diriges bem o teu caminho, para buscares o amor! pois até às mulheres perdidas lhes ensinaste os teus caminhos.34 Também nas orlas dos teus vestidos se achou o sangue das almas dos inocentes pobres; não no lugar do arrombamento o achei, mas sobre todos estes vestidos.35 Contudo disseste: Eu sou inocente; certamente a sua ira já se desviou de mim. Eis que eu entrarei em juízo contigo, porque dizes: Não tenho pecado.36 Por que te apressas tanto a mudar o teu caminho? também do Egito serás envergonhada, como já foste envergonhada da Assíria.37 Também dele sairás com as mãos sobre a cabeça, porque Jeová rejeitou as tuas confianças, e não serás bem sucedido nelas.

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:2 Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying: Thus saith the Lord: I have remembered thee, pitying thy soul, pitying thy youth, and the love of thy espousals, when thou followedst me in the desert, in a land that is not sown.3 Israel is holy to the Lord, the first fruits of his increase: all they that devour him offend: evils shall come upon them, saith the Lord.4 Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all ye families of the house of Israel.5 Thus saith the Lord: What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?6 And they have not said: Where is the Lord, that made us come up out of the land of Egypt? that led us through the desert, through a land uninhabited and unpassable, through a land of drought, and the image of death, through a land wherein no man walked, nor any man dwelt?7 And I brought you into the land of Carmel, to eat the fruit thereof, and the best things thereof: ad when ye entered in, you defiled my land, and made my inheritance an abomination.8 The priests did not say: Where is the Lord? and they that held the law knew me not, and the pastors transgressed against me: and the prophets prophesied in Baal, and followed idols.9 Therefore will I yet contend in judgement with you, saith the Lord, and I will plead with your children.10 Pass over to the isles of Cethim, and see: and send into Cedar, and consider diligently: and see if there hath been done any thing like this.11 If a nation hath changed their gods, and indeed they are not gods,: but my people have changed their glory into an idol.12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and ye gates thereof, be very desolate, saith the Lord.13 For my people have done two evils. They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have digged to themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.14 Is Israel a bondman, or a homeborn slave? why then is he become prey?15 The lions have roared upon him, and have made a noise, they have made his land a wilderness: his cities are burnt down and there is none to dwell in them.16 The children also of Memphis, and of Taphnes have deflowered thee, even to the crown of the head.17 Hath not this been done to thee, because thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God at that time, when he led thee by the way?18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the troubled water? And what hast thou to do with the way of the Assyrians, to drink the water of the river?19 Thy own wickedness shall reprove thee, and thy apostasy shall rebuke thee. Know thou, and see that it is an evil and a bitter thing for thee, to have left the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not with thee, saith the Lord the God of hosts.20 Of old time thou hast broken my yoke, thou hast burst my bands, and thou saidst: I will not serve. For on every high hill, and under every green tree thou didst prostitute thyself.21 Yet I planted thee a chosen vineyard, all true seed: how then art thou turned unto me into that which is good for nothing, O strange vineyard?22 Though thou wash thyself with nitre, and multiply to thyself the herb borith, thou art stained in thy iniquity before me, saith the Lord God.23 How canst thou say: I am not polluted, and I have not walked after Baalim? see thy ways in the valley, know what thou hast done: as a swift runner pursuing his course.24 A wild ass accustomed to the wilderness in the desire of his heart, snuffed up the wind of his love: none shall turn her away: all that seek her shall not fail: in her monthly filth they shall find her.25 Keep thy foot from being bare, and thy throat from thirst. But thou saidst: I have lost all hope, I will not do it: for I have loved strangers, and I will walk after them.26 As the thief is confounded when he is taken, so is the house of Israel confounded, they and their kings, their princes and their priests, and their prophets.27 Saying to a stock: Thou art my father: and to a stone: thou hast begotten me: they have turned their back to me, and not their face: and in the time of their affliction they will say: Arise, and deliver us.28 Where are the gods, whom thou hast made thee? let them arise and deliver thee in the time of thy affliction: for according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Juda.29 Why will you contend with me in judgement? you have all forsaken me, saith the Lord.30 In vain have I struck your children, they have not received correction: your sword hath devoured your prophets, your generation is like a ravaging lion.31 See ye the word of the Lord: Am I become a wilderness to Israel, or a lateward springing land? why then have my people said: We are revolted, we will come to thee no more.32 Will a virgin forget her ornament, or a bride her stomacher? but my people hath forgotten me days without number.33 Why dost thou endeavor to shew thy way good to seek my love, thou who has also taught thy malices to be thy ways,34 And in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor and innocent? not in ditches have I found them, but in all places, which I mentioned before.35 And thou hast said: I am without sin and am innocent: and therefore let thy anger be turned away from me. Behold, I will contend with thee in judgement, because thou hast said: I have not sinned.36 How exceeding base art thou become, going the same ways over again! and thou shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.37 For from thence thou shalt go, and thy hand shall be upon thy head: for the Lord hath destroyed thy trust, and thou shalt have nothing prosperous therein.
