1 A palavra de Jeová que veio a Jeremias, o profeta, acerca das nações.2 A respeito do Egito; acerca do exército de Faraó-Neco, rei do Egito, que estava junto ao rio Eufrates em Carquemis, ao qual Nabucodonozor, rei de Babilônia, derrotou no quarto ano de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá.3 Preparai o escudo e o pavês, e chegai-vos para pelejar.4 Aparelhai os cavalos, montai nos ginetes, e apresentai-vos com elmos; açacalai lanças, vesti-vos de couraças.5 Por que tenho esta visão? eles se espantam e voltam para trás; os seus valentes são derrotados e fogem precipitados: terror há por todos os lados, diz Jeová.6 Não fuja o ligeiro, nem escape o valente; à banda do norte junto ao rio Eufrates tropeçaram e caíram.7 Quem é este que sobe como o Nilo, cujas águas se agitam como os rios?8 O Egito sobe como o Nilo, e as suas águas agitam-se como os rios; e diz: Subirei, cobrirei a terra; destruirei a cidade e os que nela habitam.9 Subi, cavalos, estrondeai, carros; e saiam os valentes: Cus e Pute, que manejam o escudo e os ludins que manejam e entesam o arco.10 Aquele dia, porém, é dia do Senhor, Jeová dos exércitos, dia de vingança em que se vingará dos seus adversários; a espada devorará e se fartará e se embriagará com o sangue deles. Pois o Senhor, Jeová dos exércitos, tem um sacrifício na terra do norte junto ao rio Eufrates.11 Sobe a Gileade, e toma bálsamo, ó virgem filha do Egito; em vão multiplicas os remédios, não há cura para ti.12 As nações já ouviram a tua vergonha, e a terra está cheia do teu clamor; porque o valente tropeçou no valente, ambos juntos caíram.13 A palavra que Jeová falou ao profeta Jeremias sobre o haver de vir Nabucodonozor, rei de Babilônia, e haver de ferir a terra do Egito.14 Anunciai-o no Egito e fazei ouvir isto em Migdol; fazei também ouvir isto em Mênfis e em Tafnes; dizei: Apresenta-te, e prepara-te; pois a espada já devorou ao redor de ti.15 Por que está derrubado o teu valente? ele não ficou de pé, porque Jeová o empurrou.16 Jeová fez que muitos caíssem; eles caíram uns sobre os outros, e disseram: Levanta-te, e voltemos para o nosso povo e para a terra onde nascemos, para fugirmos da espada opressora.17 Clamaram ali: Estrondo é o nome de Faraó, rei do Egito; deixou passar o tempo apontado.18 Pela minha vida, diz o Rei, cujo nome é Jeová dos exércitos, certamente assim virá o rei do Egito como o Tabor entre os montes e como o Carmelo junto ao mar.19 Ó filha que habitas no Egito, prepara-te para ires ao cativeiro; pois Mênfis se tornará em desolação, e ficará deserta e despovoada.20 O Egito é uma novilha mui formosa; mas do norte é vindo um tavão sobre ela.21 Também os seus soldados mercenários no meio dela são como bezerros cevados; eles igualmente voltaram para trás, fugiram juntos, não ficaram firmes; pois é vindo sobre eles o dia da sua calamidade, o tempo da sua visitação.22 O seu ruído é como o da serpente que foge; à frente dum exército marcharão e virão contra ela com machados como os que cortam lenha.23 O bosque, diz Jeová, que de outro modo ninguém o poderá examinar, eles o cortarão; porquanto são mais numerosos do que os gafanhotos, são inumeráveis.24 Envergonhada será a filha do Egito, entregue nas mãos do povo do norte.25 Jeová dos exércitos, Deus de Israel, diz: Eis que castigarei a Amom de Nô e a Faraó e ao Egito, juntamente com os seus deuses e com os seus reis, a saber, a Faraó e aos que nele confiam.26 Entregá-los-ei nas mãos dos que procuram tirar-lhes a vida, e nas mãos de Nabucodonozor, rei de Babilônia, e nas mãos dos seus servos: e depois será habitada, como nos dias antigos, diz Jeová.27 Mas tu não tenhas medo, servo meu Jacó, nem te espantes, Israel; porque eu te livrarei de terras remotas e da terra do seu cativeiro a tua linhagem; voltará Jacó, e ficará tranqüilo e sossegado, e ninguém o amedrontará.28 Tu não tenhas medo, servo meu Jacó; porque eu sou contigo. Pois destruirei totalmente todas as nações para onde te arrojei. A ti, porém, não te destruirei de todo, mas castigar-te-ei com juízo, e de maneira alguma te terei por inocente.

1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremias the prophet against the Gentiles,2 Against Egypt, against the army of Pharao Nechao king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Charcamis, whom Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon defeated, in the fourth year of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda.3 Prepare ye the shield and buckler, and go forth to battle.4 Harness the horses, and get up, ye horsemen: stand forth with helmets, furbish the spears, put on coats of mail.5 What then? I have seen them dismayed, and turning their backs, their valiant ones slain: they fled apace, and they looked not back: terror was round about, saith the Lord.6 Let not the swift flee away, nor the strong think to escape: they are overthrown, and fallen down, towards the north by the river Euphrates.7 Who is this that cometh up as a flood: and his streams swell like those of rivers ?8 Egypt riseth up like a hood, and the waves thereof shall be moved as rivers, and he shall say: I will go up and will cover the earth: I will destroy the city, and its inhabitants.9 Get ye up on horses, and glory in chariots, and let the valiant men come forth, the Ethiopians, and the Libyans that hold the shield, and the Lydians that take, and shoot arrows.10 For this is the day of the Lord the God of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may revenge himself of his enemies: the sword shall devour, and shall be filled, and shall be drunk with their blood: for there is a sacrifice of the Lord God of hosts in the north country, by the river Euphrates.11 Go up into Galaad, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt: in vain dost thou multiply medicines, there shall be no cure for thee.12 The nations have heard of thy disgrace, and thy howling hath filled the land: for the strong hath stumbled against the strong, and both are fallen together.13 The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremias the prophet, how Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon should come and strike the land of Egypt:14 Declare ye to Egypt, and publish it in Magdal, and let it be known in Memphis, and in Taphnis: say ye: Stand up, and prepare thyself: for the sword shall devour all round about thee.15 Why are thy valiant men come to nothing? they stood not: because the Lord hath overthrown them.16 He hath multiplied them that fall, and one hath fallen upon another, and they shall say: Arise, and let us return to our own people, and to the land our nativity, from the sword of the dove.17 Call ye the name of Pharao king Egypt, a tumult time hath brought.18 As I live, (saith the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts,) as Thabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.19 Furnish thyself to go into captivity, thou daughter inhabitant of Egypt: for Memphis shall be made desolate, and shall be forsaken and uninhabited.20 Egypt is like a fair and beautiful heifer: there shall come from the north one that shall goad her.21 Her hirelings also that lived in the midst of her, like fatted calves are turned back, and are fled away together, and they could not stand, for the day of their slaughter is come upon them, the time of their visitation.22 Her voice shall sound like brass, for they shall hasten with an army, and with axes they shall come against her, as hewers of wood.23 They have cut down her forest, saith the Lord, which cannot be counted: they are multiplied above locusts, and are without number.24 The daughter of Egypt is confounded, and delivered into the hand of the people of the north.25 The Lord of hosts the God of Israel hath said: Behold I will visit upon the tumult of Alexandria, and upon Pharao, and upon Egypt, and upon her gods, and upon her kings, and upon Pharao, upon them that trust in him.26 And I will deliver them into the hand of them that seek their lives, into the hand of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants: and afterwards it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the Lord.27 And thou my servant Jacob, fear not and be not thou dismayed, O Israel: for behold I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed out of the land of thy captivity: and Jacob shall return and be at rest, and prosper: and there shall be none to terrify him.28 And thou, my servant Jacob, fear not, saith the Lord: because I am with thee, for I will consume all the nations to which I have cast thee out: but thee I will not consume, but I will correct thee in judgment, neither will I spare thee as if thou wert innocent.
