Naás ameaça a Jabes-Gileade

1 Então, subiu *1Sm 12.12Naás, amonita, e se acampou contra *Jz 21.8;1Sm 31.11Jabes-Gileade. Disseram todos os homens de Jabes a Naás: Faze *1Rs 20.34;Ez 17.13aliança conosco, e te serviremos. 2 Respondeu-lhes Naás, amonita: Farei aliança convosco com a condição *Nm 16.14de vos serem tirados os olhos direitos; assim, trarei *1Sm 17.26;Sl 44.13opróbrio sobre todo o Israel. 3 Disseram-lhe os *1Sm 8.4anciãos de Jabes: Concede-nos sete dias, para que enviemos mensageiros por todo o território de Israel; e, não havendo ninguém que nos livre, sairemos a ter contigo. 4 Vieram os mensageiros a *1Sm 10.26;15.34Gibeá de Saul e falaram estas palavras aos ouvidos do povo; todo o povo *1Sm 30.4;Gn 27.38;Jz 2.4levantou a voz e chorou. 5 Eis que Saul vinha do campo, *1Rs 19.19atrás dos bois, e perguntou: Que tem o povo para chorar? Referiram-lhe as palavras dos homens de Jabes.

Vitória de Saul sobre os amonitas

6 *1Sm 10.10;16.13;Jz 3.10;6.34;13.25;14.6O Espírito de Deus apoderou-se de Saul, quando ouviu estas palavras e acendeu-se grandemente a sua ira. 7 Tomou uma junta de bois, *Jz 19.29cortou-os em pedaços e enviou a todos os termos de Israel por mão de mensageiros que dissessem: *Jz 21.5,8,10Todo aquele que não sair para seguir a Saul e a Samuel, assim se fará aos seus bois. Então, caiu o temor do Senhor sobre o povo, e saíram *Jz 20.1como um só homem. 8 Contou-o em *Jz 1.5Bezeque; e acharam-se *Jz 20.2trezentos mil homens de Israel e trinta mil de Judá. 9 Disseram aos mensageiros que tinham vindo: Assim direis aos homens de Jabes-Gileade: Amanhã, quando o sol aquentar, sereis socorridos. Vieram os mensageiros e deram a notícia aos homens de Jabes, que se alegraram 10 e disseram: *1Sm 11.3Amanhã, sairemos a ter convosco, e nos fareis tudo o que bem vos parecer. 11 Ao outro dia, dividiu Saul o povo *Jz 7.16em três companhias. Na vigília da manhã, entraram no meio do arraial e feriram aos amonitas até que se fez sentir o calor do dia. Os que escaparam foram desmantelados, de sorte que não ficaram deles dois juntos.

12 Disse o povo a Saul: *1Sm 10.27Quem são os que diziam: Reinará, porventura, Saul sobre nós? *Lc 19.27Trazei cá os homens, para que os matemos. 13 Porém Saul disse: Hoje, não se há de matar ninguém, porque, no dia de hoje, Jeová salvou a Israel*1Sm 10.27;2Sm 19.22,*1Sm 19.5;Êx 14.13.

14 Então, disse Samuel ao povo: Vinde, e vamos a *1Sm 7.16;10.8Gilgal e *1Sm 10.25renovemos ali o reino. 15 Partiu todo o povo para Gilgal; ali em Gilgal, constituíram a Saul por seu rei *1Sm 10.17diante de Jeová e ali *1Sm 10.8imolaram sacrifícios de ofertas pacíficas diante de Jeová, e ali muito se alegrou Saul, e todos os homens de Israel.

1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee. 2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel. 3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.*11.3 Give…: Heb. 4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. 6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. 7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.*11.7 with…: Heb. as one man 8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.*11.9 help: or, deliverance 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. 11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. 13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel. 14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. 15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
