Samuel manda a Saul destruir os amalequitas

1 Disse Samuel a Saul: *1Sm 9.16Jeová enviou-me para te ungir rei sobre o seu povo, sobre Israel; agora, escuta as palavras de Jeová. 2 Assim diz Jeová dos Exércitos: Observei *Êx 17.8-16;Nm 24.20;Dt 25.17-19o que fez Amaleque a Israel e de que modo se lhe opôs quando saía do Egito. 3 Vai, e fere a Amaleque, e *Nm 24.20;Dt 20.16-18;Js 6.17-21destrói totalmente a ele e a tudo o que tiver; não lhe perdoes, mas *1Sm 22.19mata homem e mulher, o menino e crianças de mama, boi e ovelha, camelo e jumento.

4 Saul convocou o povo e enumerou-os em *Js 15.24Telaim: duzentos mil homens de pé e dez mil homens de Judá. 5 Chegou Saul à cidade de Amaleque e dispôs emboscadas ao longo da torrente. 6 Disse Saul aos *Jz 1.16;4.11queneus: Ide, retirai-vos, descei dentre os amalequitas; não suceda que eu vos destrua juntamente com eles, porque *Êx 18.9-10,19;Nm 10.29-32vós usastes de misericórdia com todos os filhos de Israel, quando subiam do Egito. 7 *1Sm 14.48Saul bateu os amalequitas *Gn 16.7;25.17-18desde Havilá, no caminho de *1Sm 27.8;Êx 15.22Sur que está defronte do Egito. 8 Tomou vivo a *Nm 24.7;Et 3.1Agague, rei dos amalequitas, e *1Sm 27.8;30.1;2Sm 8.12destruiu por completo a todo o povo ao fio da espada. 9 Mas Saul e o povo *1Sm 15.3,15,19perdoaram a Agague e ao melhor das ovelhas, e dos bois, e dos animais engordados, e dos cordeiros, e a todo o que era bom e não os quiseram destruir totalmente; porém a tudo o que houve de vil e desprezível, isso destruíram.

Deus manda Samuel repreender a Saul

10 Veio a palavra de Jeová a Samuel, dizendo: 11 *Gn 6.6-7;Êx 32.14;2Sm 24.16Arrependo-me de ter constituído rei a Saul, porque *1Rs 9.6-7deixou de me seguir e não cumpriu as minhas ordens. Indignou-se Samuel e *Êx 32.11-13;Lc 6.12clamou a Jeová toda a noite. 12 Levantou-se cedo Samuel para se encontrar com Saul pela manhã. Foi dito a Samuel que veio Saul ao *1Sm 25.2;Js 15.55Carmelo, e levantou para si um monumento, e, voltando, passou, e desceu a *1Sm 13.13-14Gilgal. 13 Chegando Samuel a Saul, disse-lhe Saul: *Gn 14.19;2Sm 2.5Bendito sejas tu de Jeová! Já cumpri a ordem de Jeová. 14 Samuel perguntou: *Êx 32.21-24Que quer dizer, pois, este balido de ovelhas que ressoa nos meus ouvidos e o mugido de bois que ouço? 15 Respondeu Saul: Trouxeram-nos de Amaleque, pois *1Sm 15.9,21;Gn 3.12-13;Êx 32.22-23o povo perdoou ao melhor das ovelhas e dos bois, para os sacrificar a Jeová, teu Deus; o resto, porém, destruímo-lo totalmente. 16 Disse Samuel a Saul: Espera e permite-me declarar-te o que Jeová me disse esta noite. Respondeu-lhe Saul: Fala.

17 Prosseguiu Samuel: *1Sm 9.21;10.22Embora pequeno aos teus próprios olhos, não foste feito, porventura, o cabeça das tribos de Israel? Jeová ungiu-te rei sobre Israel, 18 enviou-te a esta jornada e disse: *1Sm 15.3Vai, destrói totalmente a estes pecadores, os amalequitas, e peleja contra eles, até que sejam consumidos. 19 Por que não obedeceste à voz de Jeová, mas *1Sm 14.32te lançaste ao despojo e fizeste o mal à vista de Jeová? 20 Respondeu Saul a Samuel: Pelo contrário, *1Sm 15.13obedeci à voz de Jeová, e fui no caminho pelo qual Jeová me enviou, e trouxe a Agague, rei de Amaleque, e destruí totalmente os amalequitas. 21 Mas o *1Sm 15.15;Êx 32.22-23povo tomou do despojo ovelhas e bois, que são as primícias do anátema, para as sacrificar a Jeová, teu Deus, em Gilgal. 22 Disse Samuel: *Sl 40.6-8;51.16-17;Is 1.11-15;Mq 6.6-8Tem, porventura, Jeová tanto prazer em holocaustos e sacrifícios, quanto tem em que se obedeça à sua voz? Eis que *Jr 7.22-23;Os 6.6;Mc 12.33o obedecer é melhor do que o sacrifício, e o atender, do que a gordura de carneiros. 23 Porque a rebelião é como o pecado da *Dt 18.10adivinhação, e a obstinação é como a idolatria e os *Gn 31.19,34terafins. Porquanto rejeitaste a palavra de Jeová, *1Sm 13.14ele te rejeitou também a ti, para que não sejas rei.

24 Disse Saul a Samuel: *Nm 22.34;2Sm 12.13;Sl 51.4Pequei, pois *Pv 29.25;Is 51.12-13transgredi a ordem de Jeová e as tuas palavras. Tive medo do povo e obedeci à sua voz. 25 Agora, *Êx 10.17perdoa-me o meu pecado e volta comigo para que eu adore a Jeová. 26 Mas Samuel disse a Saul: Não voltarei contigo, porque *1Sm 13.14;16.1rejeitaste a palavra de Jeová, e Jeová te rejeitou a ti, para que não sejas rei sobre Israel. 27 Ao voltar Samuel as costas para se ir, *1Rs 11.30-31Saul pegou-lhe pela orla da capa, a qual se rasgou. 28 Disse-lhe Samuel: *1Sm 28.17-18Hoje, rasgou de ti Jeová o reino de Israel e o entregou ao teu próximo, que é melhor do que tu. 29 Também o *1Cr 29.11;Sl 18.1-2Triunfador de Israel *Nm 23.19;Ez 24.14não mentirá, nem se arrependerá, porque não é um homem, para que se arrependa. 30 Saul disse: Pequei. Contudo, *Jo 12.43honra-me, agora, diante dos anciãos do meu povo e diante de Israel e volta comigo, *Is 29.13para que eu adore a Jeová, teu Deus. 31 Voltando Samuel, seguiu a Saul, e Saul adorou a Jeová.

Samuel mata a Agague

32 Disse Samuel: Trazei-me aqui Agague, rei dos amalequitas. Agague veio a ele, tremendo, e disse: Na verdade, se passou a amargura da morte. 33 Disse, porém, Samuel: *Gn 9.6;Jz 1.7;Mt 7.2Como a tua espada tem desfilhado a mulheres, assim será desfilhada tua mãe entre as mulheres. Samuel despedaçou a Agague diante de Jeová, em Gilgal.

34 Depois, voltou para *1Sm 7.17Ramá; e Saul foi para sua casa em *1Sm 11.4Gibeá de Saul. 35 *1Sm 19.24Samuel não tornou mais a ver Saul até o dia da sua morte, pois *1Sm 16.1teve pena de Saul. Jeová arrependeu-se de ter constituído a Saul rei sobre Israel.

1 Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD. 2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. 4 And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.*15.5 laid…: or, fought

6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.*15.9 fatlings: or, second sort

10 Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, 11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. 12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. 13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. 14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? 15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. 17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? 18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.*15.18 they…: Heb. they consume them 19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD? 20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. 22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.*15.23 witchcraft: Heb. divination

24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. 26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. 28 And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. 29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.*15.29 Strength: or, Eternity, or, Victory 30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. 31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.

32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past. 33 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. 35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
