As vantagens do sofrimento, da paciência e da moderação

1 Melhor é *Pv 22.1o bom nome do que o unguento precioso, e *Ec 7.8;4.2o dia da morte, do que o dia do nascimento. 2 Melhor é ir à casa do luto do que ir à casa do festim. Pois naquela se vê o *Ec 2.16;3.19-20;6.6;9.2-3fim de todos os homens, e os vivos *Sl 90.12o tomam em consideração. 3 Melhor é *Ec 2.2a mágoa do que o riso, porque *2Co 7.10a tristeza do rosto torna melhor o coração. 4 O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, mas o coração dos tolos, na casa da alegria.

5 Melhor é *Ec 9.17;Sl 141.5;Pv 6.23;13.18;15.31-32;25.12ouvir a repreensão do sábio do que a canção dos tolos. 6 Pois, como o estalar de *Sl 58.9;118.12espinhos debaixo da panela, assim é *Ec 2.2o riso do tolo; também isso é vaidade. 7 Na verdade, a *Ec 4.1;5.8opressão faz endoidecer ao sábio, e *Êx 23.8;Dt 16.19;Pv 17.8,23a dádiva corrompe ao coração.

8 Melhor é o *Ec 7.1fim duma coisa do que o princípio; melhor é a *Pv 14.29;16.32;Gl 5.22;Ef 4.2paciência do que a arrogância. 9 Não *Pv 14.17;Tg 1.19te apresses em teu espírito a te irares, porque a ira repousa no seio dos tolos. 10 Não digas: Qual é a razão por que os dias passados foram melhores do que estes? Pois não é da sabedoria que procede esta pergunta.

11 A sabedoria vale tanto como a herança e *Pv 8.10-11mesmo mais para os que veem o sol. 12 Porque a *Ec 7.19;9.18sabedoria serve de defesa, do mesmo modo que o dinheiro; mas a excelência do conhecimento é que *Pv 3.18;8.35a sabedoria preserva a vida de quem a possui. 13 Considera *Ec 3.11;8.17as obras de Deus; pois quem *Ec 1.15poderá endireitar o que ele fez torto? 14 *Ec 3.22;9.7;11.9;Dt 26.11No dia da prosperidade, sê alegre, e, *Dt 8.5no dia da adversidade, refletido; Deus fez um como outro, a fim de que o homem *Ec 3.22, ref.não descubra coisa alguma que há de vir depois de si.

15 Tudo isso tenho visto *Ec 6.12;9.9nos dias da minha vaidade: há *Ec 8.14justo que perece na sua justiça, e há *Ec 8.12-13perverso que prolonga os seus dias na sua perversidade. 16 Não sejas demasiadamente justo, *Rm 12.3nem excessivamente sábio; para que te destruirias a ti mesmo? 17 Não sejas demasiadamente perverso, nem sejas tolo; para que *Jó 22.16;Sl 55.23;Pv 10.27morrerias antes do teu tempo? 18 É bom que te apegues *Ec 7.16a isso e que *Ec 7.17daquilo não retires a tua mão; pois *Ec 3.14;5.7;8.12-13;12.13quem teme a Deus escapará de um e de outro.

19 *Ec 7.12;9.13-18A sabedoria faz o sábio mais forte do que dez governadores que se acham numa cidade. 20 Pois *1Rs 8.46;2Cr 6.36;Sl 143.2;Pv 20.9;Rm 3.23não há homem justo sobre a terra que faça o bem e que não peque. 21 Não apliques o teu coração a todas as palavras que se dizem, para que não ouças o teu servo *Pv 30.11amaldiçoar-te. 22 Pois também o teu coração sabe que tu mesmo tens muitas vezes amaldiçoado a outros.

23 Tudo isso provei-o pela sabedoria. Eu disse: Far-me-ei sábio, *Ec 3.11;8.17porém a sabedoria ficou longe de mim. 24 O que está longe e *Rm 11.33mui profundo, *Jó 11.7;37.23quem o poderá achar? 25 Eu apliquei o meu coração para conhecer, inquirir e buscar a sabedoria e a razão de tudo e para conhecer que a perversidade é insensatez e que *Ec 1.17;10.13a estultícia é loucura. 26 Eu achei uma coisa *Pv 5.4mais amarga que a morte: a mulher cujo coração são *Pv 7.23laços e redes e cujas mãos são grilhões. *Pv 6.23-24Quem agradar a Deus escapará dela; *Pv 22.14o pecador, porém, virá a ser seu prisioneiro. 27 Eis o que achei, diz o Pregador, conferindo uma coisa com outra, para lhes achar a razão. 28 Eis o que ainda a minha alma busca, porém não a achei: entre mil homens, achei eu um, mas, entre todas essas *1Rs 11.3mulheres, nem uma só achei. 29 Eis o que tão somente achei: *Gn 1.27Deus fez o homem reto, mas eles se meteram em muitos extravios.

1 A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth. 2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good. 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. 5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools. 6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity. 7 Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding. 8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning.

The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. 9 Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools. 10 Don’t say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not ask wisely about this.

11 Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun. 12 For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

13 Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight which he has made crooked? 14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him.

15 All this I have seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing. 16 Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself? 17 Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time? 18 It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all. 19 Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city. 20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and doesn’t sin. 21 Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you; 22 for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others. 23 All this I have proved in wisdom. I said, "I will be wise;" but it was far from me. 24 That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out? 25 I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.

26 I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.

27 "Behold, I have found this," says the Preacher, "to one another, to find an explanation 28 which my soul still seeks, but I have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all those. 29 Behold, I have only found this: that God made mankind upright; but they search for many inventions."
