Jó declara a sua integridade nos seus deveres

1 Fiz aliança com os *Mt 5.28meus olhos;

como, pois, haveria eu de olhar para uma donzela?

2 Pois que *Jó 20.29porção teria eu do Deus lá de cima

e que herança, do Todo-Poderoso lá do alto?

3 Acaso, não há *Jó 18.12;21.30calamidade para o injusto,

e desastre, para *Jó 34.22os que obram a iniquidade?

4 Porventura, não *Jó 24.23;28.24;34.21;36.7;2Cr 16.9;Pv 5.21;15.3vê ele todos os meus caminhos

*Jó 31.37;14.16e conta todos os meus passos?

5 Se eu tenho *Jó 15.31;Mq 2.11andado na companhia de falsidade,

e o meu pé se tem apressado após o engano;

6 (Seja eu *Jó 6.2-3pesado em balança fiel,

para que Deus conheça *Jó 23.10;27.5-6a minha integridade.);

7 se os meus passos se *Jó 23.11têm desviado do caminho,

e o meu coração tem seguido os meus olhos

e, se qualquer *Jó 9.30mancha, se tem pegado às minhas mãos,

8 então, que eu *Jó 20.18;Lv 26.16;Mq 6.15semeie, e outro coma;

seja arrancado *Jó 31.12o que produz o meu campo.

9 Se o meu coração se tem *Jó 31.1;24.15deixado seduzir por causa duma mulher,

e tenho armado traição à porta do meu próximo,

e sobre ela encurvem-se *Dt 28.30;Jr 8.10outros.

11 Pois isso seria *Lv 20.10;Dt 22.24um crime infame;

isso seria uma *Jó 31.28iniquidade que deveria ser punida pelos juízes.

12 Pois é *Jó 15.30, ref.fogo que consome até a *Jó 26.6, ref.destruição

*Jó 31.8;20.28e desarraigaria toda a minha renda.

13 Se *Dt 24.14-15desprezei o direito do meu servo ou da minha serva,

quando eles pleitearam comigo,

14 que, pois, farei, quando Deus se levantar?

E, quando ele me visitar, que lhe responderei?

15 *Jó 10.3, ref.Quem me fez na madre a mim não os fez também a eles?

E não foi um que nos formou na madre?

16 Se retive o que desejavam os *Jó 5.16;20.19pobres

ou se fiz desfalecer os olhos *Jó 23.9, ref.;Êx 22.22-24da viúva;

24 Se fiz do *Jó 22.24;Mc 10.24ouro a minha esperança

e disse ao ouro fino: Em ti confio;

25 se me *Jó 1.3,10;Sl 62.10regozijei por ser grande a minha riqueza

e por ter a minha mão alcançado muito;

ou para a lua, quando caminhava cheia de brilho,

27 e o meu coração se deixou enganar em oculto,

e beijos lhes mandei com a minha mão,

28 isso também seria uma *Jó 31.11;Dt 17.2-7iniquidade que devia ser punida pelos juízes,

pois eu teria *Js 24.27;Is 59.13negado a Deus, que está lá em cima.

29 Se me *Pv 17.5;24.17;Ob 12regozijei na ruína daquele que me odiava

ou exultei quando o mal lhe sobreveio,

30 (Eu *Sl 7.4não permiti, na verdade, que a minha boca pecasse,

pedindo *Jó 5.3com imprecação a sua morte.);

31 se as pessoas da minha tenda não disseram:

Quem nos dera achar a alguém que não nos tenha *Jó 22.7fartado da carne provida por ele.

32 O estrangeiro não passou a noite na rua,

mas abri as minhas portas ao viandante;

33 se, como Adão, *Gn 3.10;Pv 28.13encobri as minhas transgressões,

escondendo a minha iniquidade no meu seio,

34 porque eu *Êx 23.2tinha medo da grande multidão,

e o desprezo das famílias me aterrorizava,

de modo que me calei e não saí da porta.

35 Oxalá que eu tivesse quem me ouvisse!

36 Por certo, eu a levaria sobre o ombro;

atá-la-ia à fronte, como uma coroa.

37 Declarar-lhe-ia *Jó 31.4o número dos meus passos;

como *Jó 1.3;29.25um príncipe chegar-me-ia a ele.

38 Se *Jó 24.2a minha terra clamar contra mim,

e se os meus sulcos juntamente chorarem;

39 se *Jó 24.6,10-12;Tg 5.4comi os seus frutos sem dinheiro

ou *1Rs 21.19se fiz que os seus donos morressem:

40 produza ela *Is 5.6;32.13espinhos em lugar de trigo

e plantas daninhas, em lugar de cevada.

1 "I made a covenant with my eyes;

how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

2 For what is the portion from God above,

and the heritage from the Almighty on high?

3 Is it not calamity to the unrighteous,

and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

4 Doesn’t he see my ways,

and count all my steps?

5 "If I have walked with falsehood,

and my foot has hurried to deceit

6 (let me be weighed in an even balance,

that God may know my integrity);

7 if my step has turned out of the way,

if my heart walked after my eyes,

if any defilement has stuck to my hands,

8 then let me sow, and let another eat.

Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

9 "If my heart has been enticed to a woman,

and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

10 then let my wife grind for another,

and let others sleep with her.

11 For that would be a heinous crime.

Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,

12 for it is a fire that consumes to destruction,

and would root out all my increase.

13 "If I have despised the cause of my male servant

or of my female servant,

when they contended with me,

14 what then will I do when God rises up?

When he visits, what will I answer him?

15 Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him?

Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?

16 "If I have withheld the poor from their desire,

or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

17 or have eaten my morsel alone,

and the fatherless has not eaten of it

18 (no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,

I have guided her from my mother’s womb);

19 if I have seen any perish for want of clothing,

or that the needy had no covering;

20 if his heart hasn’t blessed me,

for I would have denied the God who is above.

29 "If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me,

or lifted up myself when evil found him

30 (I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin

by asking his life with a curse);

31 if the men of my tent have not said,

‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

32 (the foreigner has not camped in the street,

but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

33 if like Adam I have covered my transgressions,

by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

34 because I feared the great multitude,

and the contempt of families terrified me,

so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

35 oh that I had one to hear me!

Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me!

Let the accuser write my indictment!

36 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,

and I would bind it to me as a crown.

37 I would declare to him the number of my steps.

I would go near to him like a prince.

38 If my land cries out against me,

and its furrows weep together;

39 if I have eaten its fruits without money,

or have caused its owners to lose their life,

40 let briers grow instead of wheat,

and stinkweed instead of barley."
