1 Όταν ο αρχιστράτηγος των Ασσυρίων Ολοφέρνης έμαθε ότι οι Ισραηλίτες είχαν προετοιμαστεί για πόλεμο, ότι είχαν αποκλείσει τις διαβάσεις της ορεινής περιοχής, είχαν οχυρώσει όλες τις κορυφογραμμές και είχαν στήσει οδοφράγματα στις πεδιάδες, 2 οργίστηκε αφάνταστα εναντίον τους. Κάλεσε λοιπόν όλους τους άρχοντες των Μωαβιτών, τους στρατηγούς των Αμμωνιτών και τους διοικητές των παραλίων περιοχών της Μεσογείου 3 και τους ρώτησε: «Πείτε μου, εσείς που κατοικείτε στη Χαναάν, ποιος είναι αυτός ο λαός, που κατοικεί σ’ αυτά τα βουνά; ποιες είναι οι πόλεις τους; πόσο μεγάλος είναι ο στρατός τους; από πού αντλούν τη δύναμή τους και την αμυντική τους ικανότητα; ποιος είναι ο βασιλιάς που ηγείται του στρατού τους; 4 Και γιατί μόνον αυτοί απ’ όλους τους άλλους που κατοικούν στη δύση αρνήθηκαν να έρθουν και να μου παραδοθούν;»

5 Τότε του απάντησε ο Αχιώρ, αρχιστράτηγος των Αμμωνιτών: «Άκου, κύριέ μου, τι έχει να σου πει ο δούλος σου. Για το λαό αυτό, που κατοικεί την ορεινή περιοχή, κοντά στο στρατόπεδό σου, θα σου πω την αλήθεια και μόνο. 6 Ο λαός αυτός είναι απόγονοι των Χαλδαίων. 7,8 Κάποτε άφησαν την πατρογονική τους λατρεία και προσκύνησαν το Θεό του ουρανού, που τον αναγνώρισαν ως τον μόνο αληθινό. Τελικά, επειδή αρνήθηκαν να λατρεύουν τους θεούς των προγόνων τους, έφυγαν μακριά απ’ αυτούς τους θεούς, στη Μεσοποταμία, όπου εγκαταστάθηκαν κι έζησαν για πολύν καιρό. 9 Μετά ο θεός τους τούς διέταξε να φύγουν από τη Μεσοποταμία και να πάνε στη Χαναάν, όπου εγκαταστάθηκαν κι απέκτησαν χρυσάφι, ασήμι και πάρα πολλά ζώα.

10 »Αργότερα κατέβηκαν στην Αίγυπτο, γιατί έπεσε πείνα σ’ όλη τη Χαναάν. Εκεί έμειναν όσο έβρισκαν τροφή. Γρήγορα όμως πολλαπλασιάστηκαν κι έγιναν ένας πολυάριθμος λαός. 11 Τότε ο βασιλιάς της Αιγύπτου στράφηκε εναντίον τους κι άρχισε να τους εκμεταλλεύεται. Τους υποχρέωσε να δουλεύουν και να φτιάχνουν πλίθρες. Τους καταπίεζε και τους μεταχειριζόταν σαν δούλους. 12 Εκείνοι όμως προσευχήθηκαν στο θεό τους κι αυτός τιμώρησε όλη την Αίγυπτο με αγιάτρευτες πληγές, έτσι που οι Αιγύπτιοι τους έδιωξαν από τη χώρα τους. 13 Ο θεός τους ξήρανε την Ερυθρά Θάλασσα για να περάσουν 14 και τους οδήγησε προς το όρος Σινά και την Κάδης Βαρνή.

»Λίγο αργότερα οι Ισραηλίτες έδιωξαν όλους όσοι κατοικούσαν στην έρημο,*στην έρημο. Νοείται το νοτιότατο μέρος της Χαναάν.15 και κατοίκησαν εκείνοι στη χώρα των Αμορραίων. Εξολόθρευσαν όλους τους Εσεβωνίτες, διάβηκαν τον Ιορδάνη και κατέκτησαν όλη την ορεινή περιοχή. 16 Έδιωξαν τους Χαναναίους, τους Φερεζαίους, τους Ιεβουσαίους, τους Συχεμίτες και όλους τους Γεργεσαίους, και κατοίκησαν σ’ αυτά τα βουνά για πολλά χρόνια.

17 »Ο θεός τους αποστρέφεται την αδικία κι έτσι, όσον καιρό δεν αμάρταναν εναντίον του, ευτυχούσαν, γιατί αυτός ήταν μαζί τους. 18 Όταν όμως ξεστράτισαν από το δρόμο του, τότε καταστράφηκαν από μακροχρόνιους πολέμους και τελικά οδηγήθηκαν αιχμάλωτοι σε ξένη χώρα· ο ναός του θεού τους ισοπεδώθηκε και οι πόλεις τους κυριεύτηκαν από τους εχθρούς τους.

19 »Τώρα όμως έχουν εκδηλώσει εκ νέου πίστη στο θεό τους· έτσι ξαναγύρισαν από τις χώρες όπου είχαν διασκορπιστεί, ανακατέλαβαν την Ιερουσαλήμ, όπου βρίσκεται κι ο ναός τους και εγκαταστάθηκαν στην ορεινή περιοχή, που ήταν ακατοίκητη. 20 Αν, λοιπόν, στρατηγέ μου, μπορούμε να βεβαιωθούμε πως υπάρχει κάποια αμαρτία, με την οποία αυτός ο λαός προσβάλλει το θεό του, έστω και χωρίς οι ίδιοι να το ξέρουν, τότε μπορούμε ν’ ανεβούμε και να τους επιτεθούμε αποτελεσματικά. 21 Αν όμως το έθνος αυτό δεν έχει διαπράξει καμιά αμαρτία, τότε κύριέ μου πρέπει να μείνεις μακριά απ’ αυτούς, γιατί ο θεός τους θα τους βοηθήσει και θα εξευτελιστούμε σ’ όλο τον κόσμο».

22 Μόλις ο Αχιώρ τέλειωσε την ομιλία του, όλοι όσοι βρίσκονταν γύρω από τη σκηνή αγανάκτησαν. Οι ανώτατοι αξιωματικοί του Ολοφέρνη καθώς και οι αρχηγοί των Μωαβιτών και των παραλίων λαών της Μεσογείου, ζητούσαν να χτυπηθεί ο Αχιώρ και να πεθάνει. 23 «Σίγουρα δε θα φοβηθούμε τους Ισραηλίτες», έλεγαν, «ένα λαό που δεν έχει τη δύναμη ούτε το θάρρος να μας αντισταθεί. 24 Πάμε να τους επιτεθούμε κι ο στρατός σου θα τους καταβροχθίσει, στρατηγέ Ολοφέρνη!»

1 Then was it declared to Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Assur, that the children of Israel had prepared for war, and had shut up the passages of the hill country, and had fortified all the tops of the high hills and had laid impediments in the champaign countries:

2 Wherewith he was very angry, and called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast,

3 And he said unto them, Tell me now, ye sons of Chanaan, who this people is, that dwelleth in the hill country, and what are the cities that they inhabit, and what is the multitude of their army, and wherein is their power and strength, and what king is set over them, or captain of their army;

4 And why have they determined not to come and meet me, more than all the inhabitants of the west.

5 Then said Achior, the captain of all the sons of Ammon, Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of thy servant, and I will declare unto thee the truth concerning this people, which dwelleth near thee, and inhabiteth the hill countries: and there shall no lie come out of the mouth of thy servant.

6 This people are descended of the Chaldeans:

7 And they sojourned heretofore in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of Chaldea.

8 For they left the way of their ancestors, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew: so they cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days.

9 Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Chanaan: where they dwelt, and were increased with gold and silver, and with very much cattle.

10 But when a famine covered all the land of Chanaan, they went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, while they were nourished, and became there a great multitude, so that one could not number their nation.

11 Therefore the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtilly with them, and brought them low with labouring in brick, and made them slaves.

12 Then they cried unto their God, and he smote all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues: so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight.

13 And God dried the Red sea before them,

14 And brought them to mount Sina, and Cades-Barne, and cast forth all that dwelt in the wilderness.

15 So they dwelt in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength all them of Esebon, and passing over Jordan they possessed all the hill country.

16 And they cast forth before them the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, the Jebusite, and the Sychemite, and all the Gergesites, and they dwelt in that country many days.

17 And whilst they sinned not before their God, they prospered, because the God that hateth iniquity was with them.

18 But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many battles very sore, and were led captives into a land that was not their’s, and the temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by the enemies.

19 But now are they returned to their God, and are come up from the places where they were scattered, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate.

20 Now therefore, my lord and governor, if there be any error against this people, and they sin against their God, let us consider that this shall be their ruin, and let us go up, and we shall overcome them.

21 But if there be no iniquity in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we become a reproach before all the world.

22 And when Achior had finished these sayings, all the people standing round about the tent murmured, and the chief men of Holofernes, and all that dwelt by the sea side, and in Moab, spake that he should kill him.

23 For, say they, we will not be afraid of the face of the children of Israel: for, lo, it is a people that have no strength nor power for a strong battle

24 Now therefore, lord Holofernes, we will go up, and they shall be a prey to be devoured of all thine army.
