1 Στο μεταξύ είχε μαζευτεί πλήθος κόσμου, έτσι που ο ένας να πατάει πάνω στον άλλο. Τότε ο Ιησούς άρχισε να λέει πρώτα στους μαθητές του: «Προσέχετε απ’ το προζύμι των Φαρισαίων, που είναι η υποκρισία τους. 2 Δεν υπάρχει τίποτε σκεπασμένο που δε θα ξεσκεπαστεί, και τίποτε κρυφό που δε θα μαθευτεί. 3 Ό,τι, λοιπόν, λέτε στο σκοτάδι θα ακουστεί στο φως, κι ό,τι ψιθυρίζετε σε κλειστό χώρο θ’ ανακοινωθεί στα φανερά».

4 «Σ’ εσάς όμως, φίλοι μου, λέω: Μη φοβηθείτε αυτούς που σκοτώνουν το σώμα και ύστερα δεν μπορούν τίποτα περισσότερο να κάνουν. 5 Να σας πω ποιον να φοβηθείτε: το Θεό, που έχει την εξουσία να σας ρίξει στην κόλαση μετά το φυσικό θάνατο. Σας βεβαιώνω πως αυτόν πρέπει να φοβάστε. 6 Τα πέντε σπουργίτια δεν πουλιούνται για δύο μόνο ασσάρια; Κι όμως ο Θεός ούτε ένα απ’ αυτά δεν ξεχνάει. 7 Ο Θεός έχει μετρημένες ακόμα και τις τρίχες της κεφαλής σας. Μη φοβάστε, λοιπόν, γιατί αξίζετε περισσότερο από πολλά σπουργίτια.

8 »Σας βεβαιώνω πως όποιος ομολογήσει μπροστά στους ανθρώπους ότι ανήκει σ’ εμένα, το ίδιο θα κάνει γι’ αυτόν και ο Υιός του Ανθρώπου κατά την τελική κρίση, μπροστά στους αγγέλους του Θεού. 9 Όποιος όμως με απαρνηθεί μπροστά στους ανθρώπους, θα τον απαρνηθεί και ο Υιός του Ανθρώπου μπροστά στους αγγέλους του Θεού, κατά την τελική κρίση. 10 Όποιος μιλήσει προσβλητικά κατά του Υιού του Ανθρώπου, ο Θεός θα τον συγχωρήσει· όποιος όμως προσβάλει το Άγιο Πνεύμα, ο Θεός δε θα τον συγχωρήσει. 11 Όταν σας οδηγήσουν μπροστά στις συναγωγές ή στις πολιτικές αρχές, μην αγωνιάτε για το πώς θα απολογηθείτε ή τι θα πείτε, 12 γιατί το Άγιο Πνεύμα θα σας φωτίσει εκείνη τη στιγμή τι θα πρέπει να πείτε».

13 Κάποιος από το πλήθος είπε στον Ιησού: «Διδάσκαλε, πες στον αδερφό μου να μοιράσουμε την κληρονομιά μας». 14 Κι ο Ιησούς του απάντησε: «Άνθρωπέ μου, εγώ δεν είμαι δικαστής για να χωρίζω την περιουσία σας». 15 Και στο πλήθος είπε: «Να προσέχετε και να φυλάγεστε από κάθε είδους πλεονεξία, γιατί τα πλούτη, όσο περίσσια κι αν είναι, δε δίνουν στον άνθρωπο την αληθινή ζωή». 16 Τους είπε μάλιστα την εξής παραβολή: «Κάποιου πλούσιου ανθρώπου τα χωράφια έδωσαν άφθονη σοδειά. 17 Τότε εκείνος σκεφτόταν και έλεγε: "τι να κάνω; Δεν έχω μέρος να συγκεντρώσω τα γεννήματά μου! 18 Αλλά να τι θα κάνω", είπε. "Θα γκρεμίσω τις αποθήκες μου και θα χτίσω μεγαλύτερες για να συγκεντρώσω εκεί όλη τη σοδειά μου και τ’ αγαθά μου. 19 Μετά θα πω στον εαυτό μου: τώρα έχεις πολλά αγαθά, που αρκούν για χρόνια πολλά· ξεκουράσου, τρώγε, πίνε, διασκέδαζε". 20 Τότε του είπε ο Θεός: "ανόητε. Αυτή τη νύχτα θα παραδώσεις τη ζωή σου. Αυτά, λοιπόν, που ετοίμασες σε ποιον θα ανήκουν;"

21 »Αυτά, λοιπόν, παθαίνει όποιος μαζεύει πρόσκαιρους θησαυρούς και δεν πλουτίζει τον εαυτό του με ό,τι θέλει ο Θεός».

22 Είπε τότε ο Ιησούς στους μαθητές του: «Γι’ αυτό σας λέω να μην αγωνιάτε για τη ζωή σας τι θα φάτε και για το σώμα σας τι θα ντυθείτε. 23 Η ζωή σας είναι σπουδαιότερη από το φαγητό, και το σώμα σας από τα ρούχα. 24 Παρατηρήστε τα κοράκια: ούτε σπέρνουν ούτε θερίζουν, και δεν έχουν ούτε κελάρι ούτε αποθήκη· κι όμως ο Θεός τα τρέφει. Εσείς αξίζετε πολύ περισσότερο από τα πουλιά. 25 Ποιος από σας μπορεί με τις φροντίδες του να προσθέσει έναν πήχυ στο ανάστημά του;*έναν πήχυ στο ανάστημά του. Ή: λίγο χρόνο στη ζωή του.26 Αν, λοιπόν, δεν έχετε τη δυνατότητα να πετύχετε ούτε τόσο λίγο, γιατί αγωνιάτε για τα υπόλοιπα; 27 Παρατηρήστε τα κρίνα πώς μεγαλώνουν: δεν κοπιάζουν ούτε γνέθουν· κι όμως σας βεβαιώνω πως ούτε ο Σολομών σ’ όλη του τη μεγαλοπρέπεια δεν ντυνόταν όπως ένα απ’ αυτά. 28 Κι αν ο Θεός ντύνει έτσι το αγριόχορτο, που σήμερα υπάρχει κι αύριο το ρίχνουν στη φωτιά, σκεφτείτε, ολιγόπιστοι, πόσο περισσότερο θα φροντίσει για σας! 29 Μη σας απασχολεί, λοιπόν, τι θα φάτε και τι θα πιείτε, και μη σας πιάνει άγχος. 30 Για όλα αυτά αγωνιούν όσοι δεν εμπιστεύονται το Θεό. Ο Πατέρας σας όμως ξέρει καλά ότι έχετε ανάγκη απ’ αυτά. 31 Εσείς να επιζητείτε μόνο τη βασιλεία του Θεού, κι όλα αυτά θ’ ακολουθήσουν.

32 »Μη φοβάσαι, μικρό μου ποίμνιο. Σ’ εσάς ευαρεστήθηκε ο Πατέρας σας να δώσει τη βασιλεία του. 33 Πουλήστε τα υπάρχοντά σας και δώστε τα χρήματα στους φτωχούς. Αποκτήστε πορτοφόλια που δεν παλιώνουν, πλούτη μόνιμα στον κόσμο του Θεού, όπου ούτε κλέφτης τα αγγίζει ούτε σκόρος τα καταστρέφει. 34 Γιατί όπου είναι τα πλούτη σας εκεί θα είναι και η καρδιά σας».

35 «Να είστε συνεχώς έτοιμοι με δεμένο το ζωνάρι στη μέση σας και αναμμένα τα λυχνάρια σας. 36 Να συμπεριφέρεστε σαν αυτούς που περιμένουν τον κύριό τους πότε θα γυρίσει από το γάμο, ώστε μόλις έρθει και χτυπήσει την πόρτα, να του ανοίξουν αμέσως. 37 Μακάριοι οι δούλοι εκείνοι που ο κύριός τους θα τους βρει ξύπνιους όταν έρθει. Σας βεβαιώνω πως θ’ ανασκουμπωθεί, θα τους βάλει να καθίσουν και θα τους περιποιηθεί. 38 Χαρά σ’ εκείνους μάλιστα τους δούλους, που όταν ο κύριός τους επιστρέψει τα μεσάνυχτα ή τα ξημερώματα, θα τους βρει να τον περιμένουν. 39 Και να ξέρετε τούτο: αν ο ιδιοκτήτης ενός σπιτιού ήξερε ποια ώρα θα έρθει ο κλέφτης, θα ήταν άγρυπνος και δε θα άφηνε να του διαρρήξουν το σπίτι. 40 Να είστε, λοιπόν, κι εσείς έτοιμοι, γιατί ο Υιός του Ανθρώπου θα έρθει την ώρα που δεν τον περιμένετε». 41 Τότε ο Πέτρος του είπε: «Κύριε, για μας την είπες αυτή την παραβολή ή για όλους;» 42 Κι ο Κύριος απάντησε: «Ποιος είναι ο έμπιστος και συνετός δούλος, που ο κύριός του θα τον αφήσει επιστάτη των υπηρετών του, για να τους μοιράζει την αμοιβή τους την κατάλληλη στιγμή; 43 Μακάριος είναι εκείνος ο δούλος, που όταν επιστρέψει ο κύριός του, θα τον βρει να συμπεριφέρεται μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο. 44 Σας βεβαιώνω πως θα τον βάλει υπεύθυνο σ’ όλα του τα υπάρχοντα. 45 Αν όμως ο δούλος εκείνος σκεφτεί μέσα του: "θ’ αργήσει να επιστρέψει ο κύριός μου", κι αρχίσει να δέρνει τους άλλους υπηρέτες και τις υπηρέτριες, να τρώει και να πίνει και να μεθάει, 46 τότε θα έρθει ο κύριός του μια μέρα που αυτός δε θα τον περιμένει και σε ώρα που δε θα την ξέρει. Θα τον τιμωρήσει πολύ αυστηρά και θα τον ρίξει στον τόπο όπου τιμωρούνται οι άπιστοι.

47 »Εκείνος ο δούλος που ξέρει τι θέλει ο κύριός του, δεν είναι όμως έτοιμος και δεν κάνει αυτό που θέλει ο κύριός του, θα τιμωρηθεί αυστηρά. 48 Αντίθετα, εκείνος που δεν ξέρει το θέλημα του κυρίου του και κάνει κάτι αξιόποινο, θα τιμωρηθεί ελαφρότερα. Σ’ όποιον δόθηκαν πολλά, θα ζητηθούν πολλά απ’ αυτόν· και σ’ όποιον δόθηκαν περισσότερα, θα του ζητηθούν περισσότερα».

49 «Φωτιά ήρθα να βάλω στη γη και τι άλλο θέλω αν έχει κιόλας ανάψει! 50 Έχω όμως να περάσω μια δοκιμασία και με κατέχει ανυπομονησία ωσότου την υποστώ! 51 Νομίζετε πως ήρθα για να επιβάλω αναγκαστική ομόνοια μεταξύ των ανθρώπων; Κάθε άλλο· σας βεβαιώνω πως ο ερχομός μου θα φέρει διαιρέσεις. 52 Από τώρα και στο εξής μία οικογένεια με πέντε μέλη θα χωριστεί σε δύο παρατάξεις: τρεις εναντίον δύο και δύο εναντίον τριών.

53 »Ο πατέρας θα είναι αντίθετος με το γιο του

κι ο γιος με τον πατέρα του·

η μάνα με την κόρη της

κι η κόρη με τη μάνα της·

η πεθερά με τη νύφη της

κι η νύφη με την πεθερά της».

54 Έλεγε ακόμη ο Ιησούς στα πλήθη: «Όταν δείτε τα σύννεφα να έρχονται από τη δύση, αμέσως λέτε πως έρχεται βροχή, κι έτσι γίνεται. 55 Κι όταν φυσάει νοτιάς, λέτε πως θ’ ακολουθήσει καύσωνας, κι έτσι γίνεται. 56 Υποκριτές! Τα σημάδια του ουρανού και της γης ξέρετε να τα διακρίνετε. Πώς δεν ξέρετε να διακρίνετε τα σημάδια των καιρών;»

57 «Γιατί δεν κρίνετε κι από μόνοι σας ποιο είναι το σωστό; 58 Όταν για παράδειγμα, πηγαίνεις με τον αντίδικό σου στο δικαστή, φρόντισε όσο βρίσκεσαι ακόμη στο δρόμο να συμφιλιωθείς μαζί του· γιατί αλλιώς, αν σε πάει στο δικαστή, ο δικαστής θα σε παραδώσει στο δεσμοφύλακα και ο δεσμοφύλακας θα σε κλείσει στη φυλακή. 59 Να ξέρεις πως δεν πρόκειται να βγεις από ’κει, αν δεν επιστρέψεις και το τελευταίο λεπτό».

1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. 4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. 8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: 9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. 10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. 11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: 12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. 23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. 24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? 25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? 26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? 29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. 32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; 36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. 40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? 42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. 45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; 46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! 51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. 55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. 56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? 57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. 59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
