1 Ελάτε στα λογικά σας· συνέλθετε, έθνος αδιάντροπο! 2 Κάντε το πριν ο Κύριος απαγγείλει την καταδίκη σας, πριν η ευκαιρία για μετάνοια περάσει σαν το άχυρο που το σκορπίζει ο άνεμος· πριν έρθει και σας βρει η φοβερή του Κυρίου οργή· ναι, η μέρα της οργής πριν έρθει του Κυρίου!

3 Όλοι όμως εσείς οι ταπεινοί, εσείς που υπακούτε στις εντολές του, προσηλωμένοι μείνετε στον Κύριο· πράξτε το δίκαιο, μείνετε ταπεινοί, ίσως έτσι να είστε ασφαλείς τη μέρα της οργής του Κυρίου.

4 Θα μείνει ακατοίκητη η Γάζα κι έρημη η Ασκάλωνα. Ξαφνικά θα κατακτηθεί η Ασδώδ, και μέρα μεσημέρι οι κάτοικοί της θα εξοριστούν. Και της Εκρών οι κάτοικοι από την πόλη τους θα διωχτούνε. 5 Αλίμονό σας, Φιλισταίοι, εσείς που προέρχεστε από την Κρήτη και κατοικείτε κάτω στα παράλια! Ο Κύριος λέει εναντίον σας: «Θα σ’ ερημώσω, Χαναάν, χώρα των Φιλισταίων! Δε θα σου μείνει ούτ’ ένας κάτοικος. 6 Θα γίνουν τα παράλια λιβάδια με πηγάδια για τους βοσκούς, και μαντριά για τα κοπάδια. 7 Θ’ ανήκουν σ’ αυτούς που θα επιζήσουν απ’ το λαό του Ιούδα. Εκεί θα βόσκουν τα κοπάδια τους· το βράδυ θα κοιμούνται στα σπίτια της Ασκάλωνας». Γιατί ο Κύριος, ο Θεός τους θα ενδιαφερθεί γι’ αυτούς και θ’ αλλάξει την κατάστασή τους.

8 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Άκουσα το χλευασμό των Μωαβιτών και των Αμμωνιτών την καταφρόνια, καθώς περιγελούσαν το λαό μου και καυχιόντουσαν ότι θα κατακτήσουν τη χώρα του. 9 Γι’ αυτό, εγώ ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, ορκίζομαι ότι οι χώρες των Μωαβιτών και των Αμμωνιτών θα γίνουν σαν τα Σόδομα και τα Γόμορρα· αγκαθότοποι, λάκκοι αλατιού και έρημος για πάντα. Όσοι απ’ το λαό μου επιζήσουν, θα τους λεηλατήσουν και θα κυριέψουν τη χώρα τους. 10 Αυτά θα τους συμβούν για την αλαζονεία τους, γιατί κορόιδεψαν και πρόσβαλαν το λαό του Κυρίου του σύμπαντος».

11 Ο Κύριος θα δείξει τη φοβερή του δύναμη απέναντί τους. Θα εξαφανίσει όλους τους θεούς της γης· κι όλα τα έθνη, ακόμα και τα πιο μακρινά, θα τον προσκυνήσουν, καθένα από τον τόπο του.

12 «Κι εσείς, Αιθίοπες, θα σκοτωθείτε από το ξίφος μου», λέει ο Κύριος.

13 «Το χέρι μου θ’ απλώσω στο βορρά και τους Ασσυρίους θα καταστρέψω· θα μετατρέψω τη Νινευή σ’ ερείπια, άνυδρη θα την κάνω σαν την έρημο.*Σχετικά με τη Νινευή, πρωτεύουσα της Ασσυρίας, ο Σοφονίας έδωσε παρόμοιο μήνυμα μ’ εκείνο του προφήτη Ναούμ, ο οποίος είχε ζήσει νωρίτερα κατά μία περίπου γενιά.14 Εκεί που ήταν η πόλη, κοπάδια τώρα θ’ εγκατασταθούν καθώς κι όλα των ζωντανών τα είδη· οι κουκουβάγιες και οι καλιακούδες θα κατοικούν ανάμεσα στα κιονόκρανα των στύλων της, θα κρώζουν στα ερειπωμένα της παράθυρα· κοράκια θα κράζουν στα κατώφλια. Και η εσωτερική κέδρινη επένδυση των τοίχων κάτω θα σωριαστεί. 15 Εκεί θα καταντήσει η πολιτεία η ξένοιαστη, που νόμιζε πως είναι ασφαλής και πως αυτή είναι και κανένας άλλος. Να, λοιπόν, που έγινε ερείπια, κρησφύγετο των αγριμιών! Καθένας που από κοντά της θα περνάει, θα σφυρίζει, και με χειρονομίες την φρίκη του θα δείχνει».

4 For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up. 5 Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant. 6 And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks. 7 And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.*2.7 for the LORD: or, when, etc

8 I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border. 9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them. 10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts. 11 The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.*2.11 famish: Heb. make lean

12 Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword. 13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness. 14 And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work.*2.14 cormorant: or, pelican*2.14 upper…: or, knops, or, chapiters*2.14 for…: or, when he hath uncovered 15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.
