1 Σαλπίστε στη Σιών, σημάνετε συναγερμό στο άγιο μου βουνό! Ας τρέμουν όλοι οι κάτοικοι της χώρας, γιατί η ημέρα του Κυρίου έρχεται! Είναι κιόλας κοντά! 2 Μέρα του σκότους και της καταχνιάς, μέρα της συννεφιάς και της ομίχλης. Σαν την αυγή απλώνεται απάνω στα βουνά ο εχθρός, λαός πολύς και δυνατός. Σαν αυτόν άλλος ποτέ δεν υπήρξε ούτε ποτέ θα υπάρξει ύστερ’ απ’ αυτόν, ως την εποχή των γενεών των πιο απομακρυσμένων.

3 Μπροστά απ’ αυτούς η φωτιά καίει τα πάντα, πίσω τους δεν αφήνει τίποτα. Μπροστά τους είν’ η χώρα σαν τον κήπο της Εδέμ, πίσω τους πεδιάδα ερημωμένη. Δεν τους γλιτώνει τίποτα. 4 Μοιάζουν με άλογα· τρέχουν σαν άλογα πολεμικά. 5 Ηχούνε καθώς οι άμαξες πάνω σε κορφές βουνών χοροπηδούν, τρίζουν όπως η φλόγα της φωτιάς, που καίει την καλαμιά. Παρατεταγμένοι σαν στρατός πολύς και δυνατός, έτοιμος για τη μάχη. 6 Καθώς αυτοί πλησιάζουν, τρέμουν από τον πόνο οι λαοί, όλων τα πρόσωπα χλωμιάζουν. 7 Σαν στρατιώτες κάνουν έφοδο και σαν πολεμιστές στο τείχος ανεβαίνουν. Καθένας προχωρεί ίσια μπροστά του, χωρίς να παρεκκλίνει απ’ την πορεία του. 8 Δεν μπαίνει ο ένας μέσ’ το δρόμο του άλλου· βαδίζει ο καθένας στη δική του τη γραμμή. Τρέχουν ανάμεσα στα βέλη που τους σημαδεύουν, τίποτα δεν τους σταματά. 9 Ενάντια στην πόλη ορμούν, πηδούν πάνω στα τείχη, στα σπίτια ανεβαίνουν και μπαίνουν σαν τον κλέφτη απ’ τα παράθυρα.

10 Καθώς πλησιάζουν σειέται η γη, τρέμει ο ουρανός, ο ήλιος κι η σελήνη σκοτεινιάζουν, τ’ αστέρια χάνουνε τη λάμψη τους. 11 Ο Κύριος τους οδηγεί· τους δίνει εντολές με της φωνής του τη βροντή· και το τεράστιο στράτευμά τους το θέλημά του εκτελεί. Αλήθεια, μεγάλη είναι η ημέρα της κρίσης του Κυρίου, άπειρα φοβερή. Και ποιος μπορεί να την αντέξει;

12 «Και τώρα ακόμα», λέει ο Κύριος, «μπορείτε να επιστρέψετε σ’ εμένα μ’ όλη σας την καρδιά. Νηστέψτε, κλάψτε και θρηνήστε. 13 Ξεσκίστε την καρδιά σας κι όχι τα ρούχα σας!»*Ξεσκίστε... ρούχα σας. Αναφορά στη συνήθεια να διαρρηγνύουν τα ιμάτιά τους (βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29).

Ναι, στον Κύριο, το Θεό σας επιστρέψτε! Ξέρετε πως είναι γεμάτος καλοσύνη κι έλεος, υπομονετικός, αξιόπιστος και πρόθυμος να συγχωρήσει. 14 Ποιος ξέρει; Ίσως σας λυπηθεί κι αλλάξει γνώμη και ξαναευλογήσει τα χωράφια και τ’ αμπέλια σας. Και τότε θα μπορέσετε να ξαναφέρετε στον Κύριο το Θεό σας σπονδές κι αναίμακτες θυσίες.

15 Σαλπίστε στη Σιών! Ορίστε μέρες νηστείας και συγκαλέστε σύναξη ιερή! 16 Μαζέψτε το λαό, ορίστε σύναξη ιερή και συναθροίστε γέροντες και νέους, μέχρι και νήπια. Ως και τα νιόπαντρα ζευγάρια ας βγουν απ’ τους κοιτώνες τους! 17 Ανάμεσα στο άγιο του ναού και στο θυσιαστήριο ας κλάψουν οι ιερείς που υπηρετούν τον Κύριο, κι ας πουν: «Λυπήσου, Κύριε, το λαό σου, και στην ντροπή μην παραδώσεις εκείνους που σου ανήκουνε! Μην επιτρέψεις να τους κυριέψουν τα έθνη, και μην αφήσεις τους ξένους λαούς να μας περιγελούν και να μας λένε: "πού είναι ο Θεός σας;"»

18 Ο Κύριος δείχνει ένθερμη αγάπη για τη χώρα του και έλεος για το λαό του. 19 Ο Κύριος απάντησε στο λαό του και είπε: «Κοιτάξτε, εγώ σας στέλνω το σιτάρι, το κρασί και το λάδι και θα χορτάσετε μ’ αυτά· δε θα αφήσω πια να σας περιγελούνε τ’ άλλα έθνη. 20 Αυτόν που έρχεται απ’ το βορρά*απ’ το βορρά. Ο βορράς για τον Ισραήλ ήταν τόπος απ’ όπου ξεκινούσε η καταστροφή. Εδώ οι εχθροί «απ’ το βορρά» παρομοιάζονται με ακρίδες (κεφ. 1) και με στράτευμα Κυρίου (κεφ. 2). θα τον απομακρύνω από σας. Στη Νεκρά Θάλασσα θα ρίξω την εμπροσθοφυλακή του και στη Μεσόγειο την οπισθοφυλακή του. Όλο το στράτευμα στην άνυδρη έρημο θα το διασκορπίσω. Η δυσωδία από τα πτώματά τους θα υψωθεί εκεί και θα μολύνει τον αέρα. Αυτό θα γίνει επειδή υπερηφανεύτηκαν».

21 Χωράφια μη φοβάστε! Χαρείτε κι ευφρανθείτε, γιατί ο Κύριος κάνει μεγάλα έργα! 22 Και μη φοβάστε ζώα εσείς των αγρών, γιατί βλασταίνουν τα λιβάδια! Τα δέντρα κάνουνε καρπό, τ’ αμπέλια κι οι συκιές καρποφορούνε μ’ όλη τους τη δύναμη. 23 Χαρείτε, κι ευφρανθείτε, κάτοικοι της Σιών, για τον Κύριο το Θεό σας, γιατί σας δίνει τη βροχή τη φθινοπωρινή, που τόσο είν’ απαραίτητη, δίνει την πρώιμη και την όψιμη βροχή όπως και πρώτα. 24 Γεμίζουνε τ’ αλώνια στάρι· κρασί και λάδι τα πιθάρια ξεχειλίζουνε.

25 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Θα σας αποζημιώσω γι’ αυτά που έφαγαν οι φτερωτές ακρίδες, οι κάμπιες, οι νύμφες κι οι νεαρές ακρίδες,*φτερωτές... ακρίδες. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 1:4. το μεγάλο μου στράτευμα που έστειλα εναντίον σας. 26 Τότε θα φάτε όσο θέλετε και θα χορτάσετε. Εμένα, θα δοξάσετε, τον Κύριο το Θεό σας, που έκανα θαύματα για σας. Ποτέ πια δεν πρόκειται να καταφρονεθεί ο λαός μου. 27 Έτσι θα μάθετε, Ισραηλίτες, πως κατοικώ εγώ ανάμεσα στο λαό μου, και πως εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος ο Θεός σας κι άλλος κανένας δεν υπάρχει. Ποτέ πια ο λαός μου δεν πρόκειται να καταφρονεθεί».

12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: 13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. 14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: 16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. 17 Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?*2.17 rule over: or, use a byword against

18 Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people. 19 Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen: 20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.*2.20 hath…: Heb. hath magnified to do

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. 30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
