1 Για την αυριανή τη μέρα μην καυχιέσαι, γιατί δεν ξέρεις τι θα φέρει.

2 Άσε να σε παινεύει άλλος κι όχι το στόμα σου, ξένος κι όχι τα χείλη τα δικά σου.

3 Βαρύ είναι το λιθάρι και βαριά η άμμος· αλλά η οργή του ανόητου βαρύτερη είναι κι απ’ τα δυο.

4 Σκληρή είναι η μανία και ο θυμός παράφορος· αλλά μπροστά στη ζήλεια ποιος μπορεί να σταθεί;

5 Καλύτερα μια φανερή επίπληξη, παρά φιλία κρυμμένη.

6 Του φίλου τα χτυπήματα δείχνουν πιστός πως είναι· του εχθρού τα άφθονα φιλιά σ’ εξαπατούν.

7 Ο χορτάτος την κερήθρα την περιφρονεί, μα ο πεινασμένος τα πικρά, γλυκά τα βρίσκει.

8 Σαν το πουλί που μακριά πλανιέται απ’ τη φωλιά του, είν’ όποιος απ’ τον τόπο του πλανιέται μακριά.

9 Το μύρο και τ’ αρώματα ευφραίνουν την καρδιά, κι είναι γλυκιές οι συμβουλές οι εγκάρδιες του φίλου.

10 Το φίλο σου μην τον εγκαταλείπεις, ούτε το φίλο του πατέρα σου. Μην πας στο σπίτι του αδερφού σου της συμφοράς σου την ημέρα· γιατί καλύτερος ο γείτονας που είναι κοντά, από έναν αδερφό που είναι μακριά σου.

11 Γιε μου, γίνε σοφός για να γεμίσεις την καρδιά μου με χαρά· κι αν κάποιος με προσβάλλει να μπορώ να του απαντώ.

12 Ο μυαλωμένος βλέπει το κακό και προφυλάγεται· οι ανόητοι τραβούν μπροστά και τιμωρούνται.

13 Πάρε το ρούχο εκεινού που γι’ άλλον μπήκε εγγυητής και κράτησέ το ενέχυρο για των ξένων τα χρέη.

14 Αυτός που τα χαράματα βάζει φωνές στο διπλανό του να τον καλημερίσει, είναι σαν να τον καταριέται.

15 Στάξιμο αδιάκοπο σε μέρα βροχερή κι εριστική γυναίκα είναι το ίδιο. 16 Όποιος θελήσει να τη συγκρατήσει, είναι σαν να ζητά τον άνεμο να συγκρατήσει και λάδι να κρατήσει μες στο χέρι του.

17 Όπως το σίδερο με σίδερο ακονίζεται, έτσι εκλεπτύνεται κι ο άνθρωπος από του φίλου του την επαφή.

18 Όποιος φροντίζει τη συκιά, θα φάει και τον καρπό της, κι όποιος φροντίζει τον κύριό του θα τιμηθεί.

19 Όπως μες στο νερό το πρόσωπο του ανθρώπου αντανακλάται, έτσι και στον καθρέφτη της καρδιάς του αντανακλάται ο ίδιος του ο εαυτός.

20 Όπως ο άδης δεν χορταίνει ούτε η άβυσσος, έτσι τα μάτια και του ανθρώπου δεν χορταίνουν.

21 Το ασήμι δοκιμάζεται στο χωνευτήρι και το χρυσάφι στο καμίνι· έτσι κι ο άνθρωπος κρίνεται από τη φήμη που έχει.

22 Αν κοπανούσες τον ανόητο μες στο γουδί ανάμεσα σε σπόρους με το γουδοχέρι, η ανοησία του δεν θ’ αποχωριζόταν απ’ αυτόν.

23 Μάθε καλά σε ποια κατάσταση είναι τα πρόβατά σου, φρόντιζε τα κοπάδια σου, 24 γιατί ο πλούτος δεν διαρκεί παντοτινά, ούτε το στέμμα από γενιά σ’ άλλη γενιά περνάει. 25 Όταν κόψουν το χορτάρι και ξαναβλαστήσει η χλόη και μαζέψουνε το χόρτο απ’ τα βουνά, 26 να ’χεις τ’ αρνιά και το μαλλί τους για να ντύνεσαι, τους τράγους για να τους πουλάς, χωράφι ν’ αγοράσεις. 27 Τις γίδες γάλα να σου δίνουν άφθονο, τροφή για σένα και για τους δικούς σου, και για των υπηρετριών σου τη συντήρηση.
