1 Αν μπήκες, γιε μου, εγγυητής για κάποιον φίλο σου, αν έδωσες το χέρι κι υποσχέθηκες για λογαριασμό ξένου,*Για τη χειρονομία εγγύησης βλ. Γεν 43:9· 44:32· Ψλ 119:122· Β΄ Βασ 10:15.2 αν παγιδεύτηκες με τα ίδια σου τα λόγια, εάν δεσμεύτηκες με την υπόσχεση που έδωσες, 3 τότε να τι θα κάνεις για να γλιτώσεις, μια κι έπεσες στου φίλου σου τα χέρια: Πήγαινε, ταπεινώσου και παρακάλα τον επίμονα. 4 Μην αφήσεις να σε πάρει ο ύπνος, τα βλέφαρά σου μην τα βαρύνει ο νυσταγμός. 5 Ελευθερώσου όπως το ζαρκάδι από τα χέρια του παγιδευτή, σαν το πουλί από του κυνηγού το χέρι.

6 Τράβα τεμπέλη στο μυρμήγκι, κοίταξε πώς δουλεύει και γίνε σοφός. 7 Αυτό δεν έχει ούτε αρχηγό ούτε επιστάτη ούτε αφεντικό· 8 κι όμως το καλοκαίρι εξασφαλίζει την τροφή του, προμήθειες συγκεντρώνει τον καιρό του θερισμού. 9 Τεμπέλη, ως πότε θα κοιμάσαι; Πότε απ’ τον ύπνο σου θα σηκωθείς; 10 Λίγος ακόμα ύπνος, λίγη νύστα, λίγο τα χέρια να σταυρώσεις για ν’ αναπαυτείς, 11 και θα ’ρθει η φτώχεια ξαφνικά σαν το ληστή κι η δυστυχία σαν άντρας όπλισμένος.

12 Ο κακός κι αμαρτωλός άνθρωπος τριγυρνάει λέγοντας πράγματα διεστραμμένα· 13 νεύματα κάνει με τα μάτια του, σήματα δίνει με τα πόδια του, νοήματα με τα δάχτυλά του. 14 Μες στο μυαλό του υπάρχουν πονηριές, το κακό πάντα σχεδιάζει, σπέρνει διχόνοιες. 15 Γι’ αυτό και θα ’ρθει ξαφνικά η καταστροφή του, θα συντριφθεί με μιας κι ανεπανόρθωτα.

16-19 Είν’ έξι πράγματα που τα μισεί ο Κύριος, μάλιστα εφτά που είναι αδύνατο να τ’ ανεχθεί:

Μάτια αλαζονικά,

γλώσσα που λέει ψέματα,

χέρια που αθώο χύνουν αίμα,

μυαλό που μηχανεύεται σχέδια αμαρτωλά·

πόδια που τρέχουν στο κακό,

μάρτυρα ψεύτη που διαδίδει ψέματα,

κι εκείνον που διχόνοιες σπέρνει ανάμεσα στους αδερφούς.

20 Τις εντολές, γιε μου, φύλαγε του πατέρα σου, και της μητέρας σου τη διδασκαλία μην την περιφρονείς. 21 Κράτα τες πάντα σταθερά μες στην καρδιά σου και στο λαιμό σου γύρω κρέμασέ τες. 22 Θα σ’ οδηγούν όταν βαδίζεις, θα σε φυλάνε όταν κοιμάσαι· κι όταν ξυπνάς, μαζί σου θα συνομιλούν. 23 Λυχνάρι είναι των γονέων οι εντολές, η διδαχή τους φως και της παιδαγωγίας τους οι επιπλήξεις δρόμος που στη ζωή οδηγεί. 24 Αυτές σε προφυλάττουν απ’ την κακή γυναίκα, από τις κολακείες της γυναίκας του άλλου. 25 Μη σου σκλαβώσει με την ομορφιά της την καρδιά, με τις ματιές της μη σ’ αιχμαλωτίσει! 26 Γιατί η πόρνη αρκείται σ’ ένα κομμάτι μοναχά ψωμί· ενώ η μοιχαλίδα γυρεύει να σου πάρει μια ζωή πολύτιμη.

27 Μπορεί κανείς φωτιά να βάλει μες στον κόρφο του, δίχως τα ρούχα του όλα να καούν; 28 Μπορεί κανείς να περπατήσει πάνω σε κάρβουνα αναμμένα κι όμως τα πόδια του να μην καούν; 29 Το ίδιο είναι και μ’ αυτόν που πάει με τη γυναίκα του πλησίον του· όποιος και να ’ναι που θα την αγγίξει, δεν θα μείνει ατιμώρητος. 30 Δε λογαριάζουν για αθώο τον κλέφτη που κλέβει για να χορτάσει την πείνα του. 31 Όταν πιαστεί πληρώνει στο επταπλάσιο κι όλα τα υπάρχοντα του σπιτικού του δίνει. 32 Όποιος μοιχεία διαπράττει είναι άμυαλος· είν’ ό,τι πρέπει για να καταστρέψει τη ζωή του. 33 Θα τον χτυπήσουνε και θα τον ατιμάσουν· θα υποφέρει, και η ντροπή του ποτέ δεν θα σβηστεί. 34 Γιατί η ζηλοτυπία ανάβει τη μανία στο σύζυγο, και θα ’ναι ανελέητος τη μέρα της εκδίκησης. 35 Κανένα αντάλλαγμα δεν θα δεχτεί· όσα και να του δώσεις δώρα, αυτός θα μείνει ανένδοτος.

1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, 2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. 3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.*6.3 and make…: or, so shalt thou prevail with thy friend 4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. 5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: 7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, 8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. 9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? 10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: 11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth. 13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers; 14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.*6.14 soweth: Heb. casteth forth 15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:*6.16 unto…: Heb. of his soul 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,*6.17 A proud…: Heb. Haughty eyes 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

20 My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: 21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. 22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. 23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:*6.23 lamp: or, candle 24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.*6.24 of the…: or, of the strange tongue 25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. 26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.*6.26 the adulteress: Heb. the woman of a man, or, a man’s wife 27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? 28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? 29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent. 30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; 31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house. 32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.*6.32 understanding: Heb. heart 33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. 34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.*6.35 He will…: Heb.
