1 Το κρασί φέρνει αυθάδεια και τα μεθυστικά ποτά μανία· όποιος αφήνεται να δελεάζεται απ’ αυτά, σοφός δεν μπορεί να ’ναι.

2 Σαν λιονταριού είναι βρυχηθμός του βασιλιά ο θυμός· όποιος τον εξοργίζει τη ζωή του χάνει.

3 Τιμή είναι για τον άνθρωπο φιλονικίες ν’ αποφεύγει· μόνο οι ανόητοι εξάπτονται.

4 Ο οκνός δεν οργώνει το φθινόπωρο, μα στη συγκομιδή καρπό δε θα ’βρει να θερίσει.

5 Οι σκέψεις στην καρδιά του ανθρώπου σαν τα βαθιά είναι νερά, μα ο άνθρωπος ο συνετός ξέρει απ’ αυτές ν’ αντλήσει.

6 Πολλοί είναι που διακηρύττουν την καλοσύνη του καθένας, αλλά ποιος θα μπορέσει να ’βρει άνθρωπο αξιόπιστο;

7 Ο δίκαιος βαδίζει μες στην ευθύτητά του, κι ευτυχισμένα τα παιδιά του θα ’ναι μετά απ’ αυτόν.

8 Ο βασιλιάς που κάθεται στο θρόνο να δικάσει, με τη ματιά του μοναχά κάθε κακό διακρίνει.

9 Ποιος είναι που μπορεί να πει: «Εξάγνισα την καρδιά μου, άσπιλος είμαι απ’ την αμαρτία μου»;

10 Λειψά ζύγια και ψεύτικα μέτρα, είν’ και τα δυο στον Κύριο μισητά.

11 Και το παιδί ακόμα δείχνει με τις πράξεις του αν θα ’ναι τα έργα του αθώα και σωστά.

12 Το αυτί που ακούει και το μάτι που βλέπει, ο Κύριος τα ’χει φτιάξει και τα δυο.

13 Τον ύπνο μην τον αγαπάς αν θες να μη φτωχύνεις· κράτα ανοιχτά τα μάτια σου και θα χορτάσεις το ψωμί.

14 «Κακό, κακό», λέει ο αγοραστής, μα καθώς φεύγει μέσα του παινεύεται.

15 Χρυσάφι υπάρχει κι άφθονα μαργαριτάρια· τα χείλη όμως τα γνωστικά είναι το πιο πολύτιμο.

16 Πάρε το ρούχο εκεινού που γι’ άλλον μπήκε εγγυητής και κράτησέ το ενέχυρο για των ξένων τα χρέη.

17 Είναι γλυκό στον άνθρωπο ψωμί που το ’βγαλε με απάτη· μετά όμως θα του γίνει χαλίκια μες στο στόμα του.

18 Κατάστρωσε τα σχέδιά σου ύστερα από συμβουλή, και με υπολογισμούς σωστούς έβγα στον πόλεμο.

19 Ο φλύαρος εδώ κι εκεί τα μυστικά τα φανερώνει· γι’ αυτό μην έχεις σχέσεις μ’ εκείνον που μιλάει πολύ.

20 Αυτός που μάνα και πατέρα καταριέται, θα δει να χάνεται η ζωή του, σαν το λυχνάρι που σε σκοτάδι σβήνεται βαθύ.

21 Ο πλούτος που αποκτήθηκε γρήγορα απ’ την πρώτη στιγμή, στο τέλος δεν θα ευλογηθεί.

22 Μην πεις: «Θ’ ανταποδώσω το κακό». Περίμενε τον Κύριο κι αυτός θα σε γλιτώσει.

23 Τα λειψά ζύγια ο Κύριος τ’ απεχθάνεται, κι η πλάστιγγα η ψεύτικη πράγμα καλό δεν είναι.

24 Τα βήματα του ανθρώπου τα κατευθύνει ο Κύριος· πώς μπορεί λοιπόν ο άνθρωπος να γνωρίζει το δρόμο της ζωής του;

25 Παγίδα είναι στον άνθρωπο να τάζει αλόγιστα στο Θεό, κι αφού κάνει το τάμα του μετά να συλλογιέται.

26 Ο βασιλιάς που ’ναι σοφός διαχωρίζει τους κακούς, και στρέφει ενάντιά τους την ποινή.

27 Το πνεύμα του ανθρώπου λυχνάρι είναι δοσμένο από τον Κύριο, που ερευνάει όλα τα βάθη της καρδιάς.

28 Η αγάπη κι η αλήθεια είν’ η φρουρά του βασιλιά, και με την καλοσύνη του το θρόνο του στηρίζουν.

29 Τιμή των νέων είν’ η δύναμή τους, και των γερόντων κόσμημα η λευκασμένη κεφαλή.

30 Ραβδίσματα που μελανιάζουν, καθαρίζουν το κακό· το ίδιο και τα πλήγματα της καρδιάς τα βάθη.*Η εξήγηση του στ. στο εβρ. είναι αβέβαιη.
