1 Δώσε την προσοχή σου, γιε μου, σ’ αυτά που λέει η σοφία μου, στα λόγια της φρόνησής μου. 2 Τότε θα φέρεσαι στοχαστικά, γνώση τα λόγια σου θα φανερώνουν. 3 Τα χείλη της γυναίκας του άλλου στάζουν μέλι και μαλακά σαν λάδι βγαίνουν τα λόγια από το στόμα της. 4 Στο τέλος όμως γίνεται πικρή σαν αψιθιά και κοφτερή σαν ξίφος δίκοπο. 5 Τα πόδια της φέρνουν στο θάνατο, τα βήματά της οδηγούν στον άδη. 6 Δε βαδίζει στο δρόμο της ζωής· άστατη είν’ η πορεία της, δεν ξέρει πού πηγαίνει.

7 Και τώρα ακούστε με, παιδιά, και ποτέ μην ξεχνάτε αυτά που σας λέω:

8 Τράβα το δρόμο σου μακριά απ’ αυτήν κι ούτε την πόρτα του σπιτιού της μην πλησιάσεις. 9 Αλλιώς θα χάσεις την υπόληψή σου και τη ζωή σου από τον άσπλαχνο σύζυγό της· 10 άλλοι θα χορτάσουν με τα δικά σου αγαθά και οι κόποι σου θα πάνε σε ξένο σπιτικό· 11 θα στενάζεις όταν θα ’ρθεί το τέλος σου· το σώμα σου κι η σάρκα σου θα διαλύονται, 12 κι εσύ θα λες: «Γιατί δε θέλησα ποτέ να διορθωθώ; Πώς η καρδιά μου περιφρόνησε τον έλεγχο; 13 Πώς και δεν άκουσα των δάσκαλών μου τη φωνή και δεν έδωσα προσοχή σ’ εκείνους που με συμβουλεύαν; 14 Λίγο έλειψε να καταντροπιαστώ δημόσια!»

15 Απ’ τη δική σου στέρνα πίνε το νερό, πίνε νερό που αναβρύζει απ’ το πηγάδι σου. 16 Γιατί να χύνονται έξω οι πηγές σου και τα ρυάκια των νερών σου στις πλατείες; 17 Μόνο δικά σου ας είναι· με τους ξένους μην τα μοιράζεσαι. 18 Συνέχισε να χαίρεσαι με τη γυναίκα που παντρεύτηκες στα νιάτα σου· ευλογημένη να ’ναι και ν’ αποκτήσει πολλά παιδιά. 19 Να ’ναι για σένα σαν ελάφι αγαπητό, ζαρκάδι τρισχαριτωμένο. Ας σε ποτίζουν πάντοτε οι μαστοί της, με την αγάπη της να ευφραίνεσαι. 20 Γιε μου, γιατί να ευχαριστιέσαι με γυναίκα ξένη και ν’ αγκαλιάζεις κόρφο άγνωστης; 21 Ο Κύριος βλέπει τους δρόμους όλων των ανθρώπων· εκείνος εξετάζει ό,τι κι αν κάνουν. 22 Τον ασεβή τον παγιδεύουν οι ανομίες του και τα δεσμά της αμαρτίας του τον σφίγγουν. 23 Και θα πεθάνει, γιατί δεν έχει αυτοέλεγχο· απ’ τη μεγάλη του αφροσύνη θα χαθεί.

1 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: 2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:*5.3 mouth: Heb. palate 4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. 6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them. 7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. 8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: 9 Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: 10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;*5.10 thy wealth: Heb. thy strength 11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, 12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; 13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! 14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. 16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. 17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee. 18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. 19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.*5.19 satisfy…: Heb. water thee*5.19 be thou…: Heb. err thou always in her love 20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? 21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.

22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.*5.22 sins: Heb. sin 23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.
