1 Αυτά είναι τα ιερά λόγια του Αγούρ, γιου του Ιακαί.

Είπε ο ξακουστός Αγούρ: «Είμαι κουρασμένος, Θεέ, κουρασμένος και αποκαμωμένος. 2 Εγώ ασφαλώς είμαι ο πιο ανόητος άνθρωπος· ούτε καν τον κοινό νου δεν έχω. 3 Δεν έμαθα ποτέ μου τη σοφία κι ούτε γνωρίζω τίποτε για τον Άγιο Θεό.

4 »Ποιος στα ουράνια ανέβη και κατέβηκε;

Ποιος μάζεψε τον άνεμο στις χούφτες του;

Ποιος τα νερά μάζεψε σ’ ένα ρούχο;

Ποιος στέριωσε όλες τις άκριες της γης;

Ποιο είναι τ’ όνομά του, και ποιο

του γιου του τ’ όνομα;

Το ξέρεις;

5 »Ο κάθε λόγος του Κυρίου δοκιμασμένος·

ασπίδα είν’ αυτός για όσους

σ’ εκείνον καταφεύγουν.

6 Στα λόγια του τίποτα μην προσθέτεις,

για να μη σε διορθώσει

και ψεύτης αποδειχτείς».

7 Δυο πράγματα γυρεύω από σένα, Θεέ μου· προτού πεθάνω μη μου τα αρνηθείς: 8 Φύλαξέ με απ’ το να χρησιμοποιήσω δόλο ή ψευτιά· φτώχεια να μη μου δώσεις μα ούτε πλούτο· δίνε μου μόνο το απαραίτητο ψωμί, 9 μήπως παραχορτάσω και σε αρνηθώ, και πω «ποιος είναι ο Κύριος;» Ή πάλι μήπως μες στη φτώχεια κλέψω και δυσφημήσω το Θεό μου.

10 Δούλο να μη συκοφαντείς στον κύριό του, για να μη σε καταραστεί και ενοχοποιηθείς εσύ.

11 Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που καταριούνται τον πατέρα τους, και τη μητέρα τους δεν την τιμούν.

12 Υπάρχουν κάποιοι που θαρρούν πως είναι καθαροί, αλλά απ’ τη ρυπαρότητά τους δεν έχουνε καθαριστεί.

13 Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που έχουν τα μάτια αγέρωχα, τα βλέφαρα υπεροπτικά.

14 Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που ξίφη είναι τα δόντια τους, και τα σαγόνια τους μαχαίρια για να καταβροχθίζουν τους δυστυχισμένους και τους φτωχούς της γης.

15 Η βδέλλα έχει δυο κόρες, που κι οι δυο λένε: «δώσε, δώσε».

Υπάρχουν τρία πράγματα, που δε χορταίνουνε ποτέ, μάλιστα τέσσερα, που δε λένε ποτέ τους «φτάνει»:

16 Ο άδης,

η στείρα μήτρα,

η γη που δε χορταίνει το νερό,

και η φωτιά, που με τίποτα δεν ικανοποιείται.

17 Μάτι που περιπαίζει τον πατέρα και τη γριά μάνα την καταφρονεί, του φαραγγιού κοράκια θα το βγάλουν, και θα το φάνε τα μικρά αετόπουλα.

18 Υπάρχουν τρία πράγματα που με ξεπερνούν, μάλιστα τέσσερα που δεν καταλαβαίνω:

19 Το πέταγμα του αετού στον ουρανό,

το πέρασμα φιδιού πάνω στο βράχο,

του πλοίου την πορεία μες στη θάλασσα,

και την αγάπη του άντρα προς τη νέα γυναίκα.

20 Να τι λογής είναι το φέρσιμο της μοιχαλίδας: Κάνει μοιχεία και λέει «τι κακό έκανα;» Είναι σαν να ’φαγε και μετά σκούπισε αδιάφορα το στόμα της.

21 Τρία πράγματα κάνουν τη γη να τρέμει, μάλιστα τέσσερα, που να τα υποφέρει δεν μπορεί:

22 Το δούλο που γίνεται βασιλιάς,

τον ανόητο που το ψωμί χορταίνει,

23 τη μισητή γυναίκα που παντρεύεται,

και την υπηρέτρια που τη θέση της κυράς της παίρνει.

24 Υπάρχουν τέσσερα ζώα πάνω στη γη, πολύ πολύ μικρά κι όμως σοφότατα:

25 Τα μυρμήγκια· είναι λαός ανίσχυρος

αλλά απ’ το καλοκαίρι αποθηκεύουν την τροφή τους.

26 Οι ύρακες· λαός ανίσχυρος κι αυτοί,

και φτιάχνουνε το σπίτι τους στο βράχο.

27 Οι ακρίδες· δεν έχουν βασιλιά

και βγαίνουν όλες σε κανονική διάταξη.

28 Η σαύρα· μπορεί κανείς και με το χέρι να την πιάσει,

κι ωστόσο βρίσκεται μέσα στ’ ανάκτορα του βασιλιά.

29 Αυτά τα τρία βαδίζουν όμορφα, μάλιστα τέσσερα ωραία προχωρούνε:

30 Το λιοντάρι, που το ισχυρότερο είναι ανάμεσα στα ζώα,

και σε κανέναν μπρος δεν οπισθοχωρεί·

31 ο κόκκορας, ο τράγος και ο βασιλιάς,

που σ’ αυτόν κανείς δεν αντιστέκεται.

32 Αν την ανοησία έκανες να περηφανευτείς κι αν σκέφτηκες κάτι κακό, κλείσε το στόμα σου. 33 Γιατί αν χτυπάς το γάλα βγάζεις βούτυρο, τη μύτη αν χτυπήσεις βγάζει αίμα· κι όταν ξεσπάσει ο θυμός βγαίνουν διχόνοιες.

7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:*30.7 deny…: Heb. withhold not from me 8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:*30.8 convenient…: Heb. of my allowance 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.*30.9 deny…: Heb. belie thee

10 Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.*30.10 Accuse…: Heb. Hurt not with thy tongue 11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. 12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. 13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. 14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

15 The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:*30.15 It is…: Heb. Wealth 16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough. 17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.*30.17 the valley: or, the brook

18 There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: 19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.*30.19 midst: Heb. heart 20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness. 21 For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear: 22 For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat; 23 For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

24 There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:*30.24 exceeding…: Heb. wise, made wise 25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; 26 The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; 27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;*30.27 by…: Heb. gathered together 28 The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.

29 There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going: 30 A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any; 31 A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.*30.31 greyhound: or, horse: Heb. girt in the loins 32 If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth. 33 Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
