1 Τ’ όνομα το καλό είναι προτιμότερο από πληθώρα πλούτη· να σ’ εκτιμούν, πιότερο αξίζει από τ’ ασήμι και το μάλαμα.

2 Ο πλούσιος κι ο φτωχός σ’ ένα σημείο συμπίπτουν: ο Κύριος και τους δυο τους έπλασε.

3 Ο μυαλωμένος βλέπει το κακό και προφυλάγεται· οι ανόητοι προχωρούν και τιμωρούνται.

4 Είν’ η ανταμοιβή του ταπεινού κι εκείνου που τον Κύριο σέβεται, πλούτος και δόξα και ζωή.

5 Τριβόλια και παγίδες στου διεστραμμένου είναι το δρόμο· όποιος φυλάει τη ζωή του απομακρύνεται απ’ αυτά.

6 Μάθαινε το παιδί στην αρχή της ζωής του να ’χει καλές συνήθειες, και δε θα ξεστρατίσει απ’ αυτές ούτε όταν θα ’ναι γέρος πια.

7 Ο πλούσιος εξουσιάζει τους φτωχούς· κι εκείνος που δανείζεται, του δανειστή είναι δούλος.

8 Όποιος σπέρνει αδικία, θερίζει συμφορά· η τυραννία του πάνω στους άλλους, θα τελειώσει.

9 Εκείνος που έχει βλέμμα φιλικό θα ευλογηθεί, γιατί απ’ το δικό του το ψωμί δίνει και στον φτωχό.

10 Διώξε τον εγωιστή και θα λείψει η διχόνοια· θα πάψουν και η φιλονικία και οι προσβολές.

11 Όποιος την καθαρότητα αγαπάει της καρδιάς κι όποιος μιλάει με χάρη, έχει το βασιλιά για φίλο του.

12 Τα μάτια του Κυρίου τη γνώση την περιφρουρούν· ενώ του πονηρού τα λόγια τ’ ανατρέπει.

13 Λέει ο τεμπέλης: «Είναι στο δρόμο ένα λιοντάρι· αν βγω έξω απ’ το σπίτι μπορεί και να με φάει».

14 Λάκκος βαθύς το στόμα είναι της πόρνης· κι αυτός που έχει ενάντια του την οργή του Κυρίου θα πέσει μέσα εκεί.

15 Η ανοησία με του παιδιού συνδέεται την καρδιά· μα της παιδείας το ραβδί θα την απομακρύνει.

16 Όποιος πιέζει τον φτωχό, στο τέλος τον κάνει πλούσιο· κι όποιος δίνει στον πλούσιο, σίγουρα ο ίδιος θα φτωχύνει.*Το εβρ. είναι ασαφές. Εδώ εννοείται η αντίληψη πως όταν ένας φτωχός καταπιέζεται, ο Θεός τού συμπεριφέρεται σαν να είναι δίκαιος. – Για την αντιστροφή των κοινωνικών καταστάσεων των ανθρώπων βλ. Α΄ Σαμ. 2:8· Ιωβ 5:11· Λκ 1:51-53 και εξής.

17 Στρέψε τ’ αυτί σου κι άκου τα λόγια των σοφών, στη γνώση μου αφοσιώσου· 18 γιατί είν’ ευχάριστο να τα κρατάς όλα βαθιά μες στην καρδιά σου, και να τα ψιθυρίζεις με τα χείλη σου. 19 Θα σε διδάξω σήμερα κι εσένα. Για να ’χεις την εμπιστοσύνη σου στον Κύριο. 20 Τριάντα ρητά με συμβουλές και γνώσεις έγραψα για σένα, 21 για να σε κάνω να γνωρίσεις την πραγματική αλήθεια, ώστε με λόγια αλήθειας ν’ απαντάς σ’ εκείνον που την αλήθεια σε στέλνει για να βρεις:

22 Μη γδύνεις το φτωχό επειδή είναι φτωχός, και μην καταπιέζεις το δυστυχή στη δίκη· 23 γιατί ο Κύριος θα υπερασπιστεί το δίκιο τους και θα απειλήσει τη ζωή εκείνων που τους απειλούν.

24 Μην πιάνεις φιλία με άνθρωπο που θυμώνει, και με άνθρωπο ευέξαπτο μη συμπορεύεσαι, 25 για να μη συνηθίσεις στους τρόπους του, και παγίδα γίνουν στην ψυχή σου.

26 Μην είσαι από κείνους που υπόσχονται εύκολα, από κείνους που εγγυώνται για χρέη. 27 Όταν δεν θα ’χεις από πού να τα πληρώσεις, θα πάρουν κάτωθέ σου το κρεβάτι σου.

28 Μη μετατοπίζεις παλιά όρια, που έβαλαν οι πρόγονοί σου για να ορίζουν την ιδιοκτησία τους.

29 Είδες άνθρωπο επιδέξιο στα έργα του; Αυτός θα παρουσιαστεί μπροστά σε βασιλιάδες, όχι μπροστά σε τιποτένιους.
