1 Όταν καθίσεις στο τραπέζι μ’ έναν άρχοντα, πρόσεξε ποιος είναι μπροστά σου. 2 Συγκρατήσου αν είσαι λαίμαργος. 3 Μη λαχταράς τις λιχουδιές του, είναι τροφή απατηλή.

4 Μην αγωνίζεσαι να γίνεις πλούσιος· μ’ αυτό ας μην απασχολείται ο νους σου. 5 Μόλις στρέψεις τα μάτια σου στον πλούτο, χάνεται· κάνει φτερά και σαν αετός στον ουρανό πετάει.

6 Μην τρως αντάμα με τον φθονερό και μην τα λαχταράς τα φαγητά του. 7 Αυτός όλα τα υπολογίζει. Σου λέει «φάε και πιες», ενώ μέσα του άλλα σκέφτεται. 8 Θα κάνεις εμετό την μπουκιά που ’φαγες και οι φιλοφρονήσεις σου θα παν’ χαμένες.

9 Μη χάνεις τα λόγια σου με τον ανόητο, γιατί θα καταφρονήσει τις σοφές σου συμβουλές.

10 Μη μετατοπίζεις τα παλιά όρια ιδιοκτησίας και μην καταπατάς τα χωράφια των ορφανών, 11 γιατί ο υπερασπιστής τους είναι ισχυρός· αυτός το μέρος τους ενάντια σου θα πάρει. *Μη...προσοχή.Ο νόμος απαγόρευε τη μετακίνηση των ορίων (Δτ 19:14). Ο Θεός απαιτούσε ιδιαίτερο σεβασμό σ’ αυτή τη διάταξη, ιδιαίτερα όταν επρόκειτο για ανυπεράσπιστους ανθρώπους, όπως ήταν οι ξένοι, οι χήρες και τα ορφανά.

12 Στη διδαχή άνοιξε την καρδιά σου και τα λόγια της γνώσης άκου τα με προσοχή.

13 Μην είσαι φειδωλός στου παιδιού το σωφρονισμό· μ’ ένα γερό ξυλοδαρμό δεν θα πεθάνει. 14 Αντίθετα, χτυπώντας το, το προστατεύεις από λάθη θανάσιμα.

15 Γιε μου, αν γίνει η καρδιά σου σοφή, θα χαίρεται η καρδιά η δική μου. 16 Τα σπλάχνα μου θα ευφραίνονται όταν τα χείλη σου μιλούν σωστά.

17 Να φθονεί η καρδιά σου τους αμαρτωλούς, αλλά το φόβο ας έχει πάντα του Κυρίου· 18 τότε θα μπορείς να ατενίζεις με αισιοδοξία το μέλλον και η ελπίδα σου δε θα χαθεί.

19 Άκουσε γιε μου και γίνε σοφός και την καρδιά σου οδήγησ’ την στον ίσιο δρόμο. 20 Μην είσαι στην παρέα των μέθυσων, κι εκείνων που με κρέατα παραχορταίνουν· 21 γιατί ο μέθυσος κι ο λαίμαργος φτωχαίνουν, και ντύνει με κουρέλια τον υπναρά η νωθρότητα.

22 Άκουγε τον πατέρα σου, εκείνον που σε γέννησε· και τη μητέρα σου στα γηρατειά της μην την καταφρονέσεις.

23 Την αλήθεια αγόραζέ την και μην την πουλάς· το ίδιο και τη σοφία, τη διδαχή, τη φρόνηση.

24 Του δίκαιου ανθρώπου θ’ αγάλλεται ο πατέρας· κι εκείνος που σοφό γέννησε γιο θα χαίρεται γι’ αυτόν.

25 Ας χαίρονται ο πατέρας κι η μητέρα σου, εκείνη που σε γέννησε από χαρά ας σκιρτάει!

26 Δώσ’ μου, γιε μου, την καρδιά σου και πάρε τη ζωή μου για παράδειγμα. 27 Γιατί η πόρνη λάκκος είναι βαθύς, στενό πηγάδι η γυναίκα του άλλου. 28 Παραμονεύει σαν ληστής και παρασύρει κι άλλους στην παρανομία.

29 Ποιοι είν’ αξιολύπητοι; ποιοι υποφέρουν; σε ποιους είν’ οι διχόνοιες; σε ποιους η απόγνωση; ποιοι αναίτια χτυπιούνται; ποιανών τα μάτια κοκκινίζουν; 30 Αυτά όλα συμβαίνουν σ’ εκείνους που ξοδεύουν πολύ χρόνο στην οινοποσία, σ’ εκείνους που τρέχουν ν’ απολαύσουν το κρασί. 31 Μη βλέπεις το κρασί που κοκκινίζει, που στο ποτήρι δίνει χρώμα και πίνετ’ εύκολα. 32 Φτάνει στο τέλος σαν το φίδι να δαγκώνει, και να κεντρίζει σαν οχιά. 33 Τα μάτια σου θα βλέπουν φαντασίες, και λόγια ασυνάρτητα θα λες. 34 Θα ’σαι σαν να κοιμάσαι στης θάλασσας τη μέση, σαν κάποιος ξαπλωμένος στην κορφή του καταρτιού. 35 «Με χτύπησαν», θα λες, «και καθόλου δεν πόνεσα. Μ’ έδειραν, μα δεν το ’νιωσα. Πότε θα σηκωθώ να πάω να ξαναπιώ;»
