1 Είν’ η καρδιά του βασιλιά στο χέρι του Κυρίου· σαν των νερών τα ρεύματα τη στρέφει όπου θέλει.

2 Όλοι του ανθρώπου οι δρόμοι μοιάζουν σωστοί στα μάτια του, αλλά ο Κύριος ζυγιάζει τις καρδιές.

3 Πράξη να γίνεται το δίκαιο και τ’ ορθό, είναι στον Κύριο αρεστό πιότερο απ’ τη θυσία.

4 Τα μάτια τ’ ακατάδεχτα κι η αλαζονική καρδιά, που σαν λυχνάρι καθοδηγούν τους ασεβείς, άλλο δεν είναι από αμαρτία.

5 Τα σχέδια του φίλεργου φέρνουν σε βέβαιη αφθονία· αλλά όποιος βιαστικά ενεργεί, σε βέβαιη στέρηση θα φτάσει.

6 Οι θησαυροί που αποκτηθήκαν με ψευτιές, κυνήγι είναι ματαιότητας, που στις παγίδες του θανάτου φέρνει.

7 Οι πράξεις βίας των ασεβών θα τους εξολοθρέψουν, γιατί δεν δέχονται να κάνουν εκείνο που είναι δίκαιο.

8 Ο ένοχος ακολουθεί δρόμους διεστραμμένους, ενώ ο αθώος ενεργεί μ’ ευθύτητα.

9 Κάλλιο να κατοικεί κανείς στην κόχη μιας σοφίτας, παρά σε σπίτι ευρύχωρο με δύστροπη γυναίκα.

10 Πάντα του ασεβή η ψυχή διψάει για το κακό· ούτε για τον πλησίον του έλεος δεν έχει.

11 Όταν ο αδιόρθωτος τιμωρείται, αν είν’ καλοπροαίρετος, γίνεται σοφός· κι όταν διδάσκεται ο σοφός πιότερη παίρνει γνώση.

12 Δίκαιος είν’ ο Κύριος: βλέπει του ασεβή την οικογένεια και φέρνει την καταστροφή τους.

13 Όποιος τ’ αυτιά του κλείνει στου φτωχού την κραυγή, δε θα λαβαίνει απάντηση κι ο ίδιος σαν φωνάζει.

14 Δώρο που δίνεται κρυφά καταπραΰνει το θυμό· το χάρισμα το μυστικό και την πιο βίαιη οργή την παύει.

15 Χαρά είναι για τον δίκαιο να αποδίδεται δικαιοσύνη· για τους παράνομους όμως, αυτό είναι φρίκη.

16 Εκείνος που απ’ της φρόνησης λοξοδρομεί τη στράτα, θα πάει να βρει κατάλυμα στον κόσμο των νεκρών.

17 Όποιος τα γλέντια αγαπάει, σε στέρηση θα πέσει· δε θα πλουτίσει ο κρασοπότης κι ο καλοφαγάς.

18 Ο ασεβής αντίλυτρο είναι για τον δίκαιο, κι ο παραβάτης είν’ αντίλυτρο για τους ευθείς.*Στο εβρ. η εξήγηση είναι αβέβαιη.

19 Καλύτερα να κατοικεί κανείς στην ερημιά, παρά με μια γυναίκα φιλόνικη και μεμψίμοιρη.

20 Στου συνετού το σπίτι πάντοτε υπάρχουν θησαυροί πολύτιμοι κι αρώματα, ενώ ο άμυαλος όλα τα κατασπαταλάει.

21 Όποιος τη δικαιοσύνη ακολουθεί και την αγάπη, θα βρει ζωή, δικαιοσύνη και τιμή.

22 Ο σοφός κυριεύει την πολιτεία των δυνατών, και τ’ οχυρό γκρεμίζει που ήταν η ελπίδα της.

23 Όποιος το στόμα του προσέχει και τη γλώσσα του, τον εαυτό του τον φυλάει από αγωνίες.

24 Ο αλαζόνας, ο υπερόπτης, αυτός είναι που τον φωνάζουν «χλευαστή», και που ενεργεί με υπέρμετρη αυθάδεια.

25 Οι επιθυμίες του σκοτώνουν τον οκνό, γιατί τα χέρια του δε στέργουν να δουλέψουν.

26 Όλη τη μέρα σκέφτεται τι θέλει ν’ αποχτήσει, ενώ ο δίκαιος δίνει αφειδώλευτα.

27 Θυσία που προσφέρουν οι ασεβείς είν’ αποκρουστική στον Κύριο, και πιότερο όταν την προσφέρουν με σκέψεις πονηρές.

28 Ο ψευδομάρτυρας θα καταποντιστεί· μα η γνώμη εκείνου που ακούει στοχαστικά, πάντα θ’ ακούγεται.

29 Ο ασεβής παίρνει ύφος αναιδές, μα ο ίσιος άνθρωπος με σιγουριά πορεύεται.

30 Ούτε σοφία υπάρχει ούτε φρονιμάδα ούτε σκέψη σωστή μπροστά στον Κύριο.

31 Το άλογο το ετοίμασαν για τη μέρα της μάχης· τη νίκη όμως ο Κύριος τη δίνει.
