1 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνους που θεσπίζουν νόμους άδικους και σ’ εκείνους που γράφουν αποφάσεις καταπιεστικές, 2 για να στερήσουν τους αδύνατους από το δίκιο τους, και να αρπάξουν τα δικαιώματα των φτωχών του λαού μου, για να κάνουν τις χήρες λεία τους και για ν’ απογυμνώσουν τα ορφανά. 3 Τι θα κάνετε την ημέρα της κρίσης και της καταιγίδας, που έρχεται από μακριά; Σε ποιον θα καταφύγετε να σας βοηθήσει; Τα πλούτη σας πού θα τ’ αφήσετε; 4 Άλλοι θα σκύψουνε ανάμεσα στους αιχμαλώτους κι άλλοι ανάμεσα θα πέσουν στους νεκρούς.

Και μ’ όλα αυτά δεν έπαψε ο θυμός του, το χέρι του έμεινε μετέωρο, έτοιμο να χτυπήσει πάλι.

5 «Αλίμονο στην Ασσυρία!» λέει ο Κύριος. «Αυτή είναι του θυμού μου το ραβδί· με το ρόπαλο που κρατάει στο χέρι της εγώ φανερώνω την οργή μου. 6 Την έστειλα ενάντια σ’ ένα έθνος ασεβών, την πρόσταξα να πορευτεί ενάντια στο λαό που μ’ εξοργίζει, για να μαζέψει λάφυρα, να τον λεηλατήσει, να τον ποδοπατήσει καθώς τη λασπουριά του δρόμου.

7 »Ο βασιλιάς της Ασσυρίας δεν το καταλαβαίνει έτσι, δεν το συνειδητοποιεί· γιατί δε σκέφτεται παρά να καταστρέψει κι έθνη πολλά να εξοντώσει. 8 Λέει: "όλοι οι στρατηγοί μου είναι δυνατοί σαν βασιλιάδες. 9 Εγώ κυρίεψα τη Χαλάνη και τη Χαρκεμίς, τη Χαμάθ και την Αρφάδ, τη Σαμάρεια και τη Δαμασκό. 10 Εγώ κατέκτησα τα ειδωλολατρικά βασίλεια που τα αγάλματά τους ήταν περισσότερα από της Ιερουσαλήμ και της Σαμάρειας. 11 Ό,τι λοιπόν έκανα στη Σαμάρεια και στους θεούς της, το ίδιο θα κάνω και στην Ιερουσαλήμ και στα είδωλά της"».

12 Ο Κύριος όμως λέει: «Όταν τελειώσω όλο το έργο μου στο όρος Σιών και στην Ιερουσαλήμ, τότε θα χτυπήσω το βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας για την αλαζονεία της καρδιάς του και για την έπαρσή του. 13 Αυτός ο βασιλιάς έχει το θράσος να λέει: "ό,τι έκανα, το πέτυχα με τη δική μου δύναμη και με τη σοφία μου, γιατί έχω μυαλό εγώ. Μετατόπισα τα σύνορα των κρατών, λεηλάτησα τους θησαυρούς τους και θρόνους έριξα κάτω στη γη. 14 Βρήκε το χέρι μου τα πλούτη των λαών σαν μέσα σε φωλιά πουλιών· όπως κανείς μαζεύει παρατημένα αυγά, έτσι κι εγώ όλη τη γη συγκέντρωσα κι ούτε που βρέθηκε κανείς για να χτυπήσει τα φτερά, το ράμφος του ν’ ανοίξει να διαμαρτυρηθεί!"»

15 Καυχιέται ποτέ η αξίνα ενάντια σ’ αυτόν που τη χρησιμοποιεί; ή μήπως το πριόνι περηφανεύεται σ’ εκείνον που το δουλεύει; Σαν να μπορούσε το ραβδί να χειριστεί αυτόν που το κρατάει, σαν να μπορούσε το ξύλινο ρόπαλο εκείνον να σηκώσει, που δεν είναι από ξύλο καμωμένος.

16 Γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, θα μετατρέψει την ευδαιμονία της Ασσυρίας σε φτώχεια· κάτω από τη φαινομενική της δόξα, η φωτιά θ’ απλωθεί σαν πυρκαγιά. 17 Τότε ο Άγιος Θεός, το φως του Ισραήλ, φωτιά θα γίνει και φλόγα που θ’ ανάψει, τ’ αγκάθια της και τα τριβόλια της θα τα κατακάψει μέσα σε μία μέρα. 18 Θα καταστρέψει ολότελα το όμορφο δάσος και τους κήπους της με τα καρποφόρα δέντρα· θα νομίζει κανείς πως βλέπει ετοιμοθάνατο. 19 Τα δέντρα που θ’ απομείνουνε στο δάσος της εύκολα θα μετριούνται και θα μπορεί ένα μικρό παιδί τον αριθμό τους να τον γράψει.

20 Έρχεται μέρα που το υπόλοιπο του Ισραήλ, όσοι από το γένος του Ιακώβ γλιτώσουν, θα πάψουν πια να στηρίζονται στην Ασσυρία που τους χτυπούσε και θα στηριχθούν μ’ εμπιστοσύνη στον Κύριο, τον Άγιο Θεό του Ισραήλ. 21 Ένα υπόλοιπο θα επιστρέψει, το υπόλοιπο του Ιακώβ, στον ισχυρό Θεό. 22 Γιατί ακόμα κι αν ο λαός σου, Ισραήλ, ήτανε σαν της θάλασσας την άμμο, μόνο ένα μέρος απ’ αυτόν θα επέστρεφε. Έχει αποφασιστεί η καταστροφή και θα συντελεστεί με δικαιοσύνη. 23 Ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, θα φέρει πάνω σ’ όλη τη χώρα την καταστροφή που αποφάσισε.

24 Να τι λέει ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος: «Λαέ μου, που κατοικείς στη Σιών, μη φοβηθείς από την Ασσυρία, ακόμα κι όταν το ραβδί της σηκώνει πάνω σου και σε χτυπάει, όπως σου έκανε κάποτε η Αίγυπτος. 25 Γιατί ύστερα από λίγον καιρό θα πάψει η οργή μου για σας, και ο θυμός μου θα στραφεί εναντίον εκείνων, για να τους καταστρέψει. 26 Τότε εγώ ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, θα κινήσω εναντίον τους το μαστίγιο, όπως τότε που χτύπησα τους Μαδιανίτες στο βράχο Ωρήβ, και θα σηκώσω το ραβδί μου πάνω από τη θάλασσα, όπως έκανα κάποτε στην Αίγυπτο. 27 Την ημέρα εκείνη θ’ αφαιρεθεί το φορτίο της Ασσυρίας από τους ώμους σου και ο ζυγός της από τον τράχηλό σου».*ο ζυγός της από τον τράχηλό σου, το πιθανό κείμενο. Το εβρ. έχει: «ο ζυγός θα σπάσει από το πάχος».

28 Κάνει ο στρατός των Ασσυρίων επίθεση στην Αϊάθ, περνάει από τη Μιγρών, αφήνει τη σκευή του στη Μιχμάς. 29 Περνάνε τα στενά, διανυκτερεύουν στη Γεβά. Η Ραμά τρομάζει. Η Γαβαά, του Σαούλ η πόλη, τρέπεται σε φυγή. 30 Ύψωσε τη φωνή σου, όμορφη Γαλλίμ, άκουσε Λαϊσά! Απάντησέ της,*Απάντησέ της, το πιθανό κείμ. Το εβρ. έχει: «δυστυχισμένη». Αναθώθ! 31 Η Μαδμηνά τρέπεται σε φυγή, οι κάτοικοι της Γεβίμ φεύγουν για να σωθούνε. 32 Την ίδια μέρα ο εχθρός είναι ήδη στη Νωβ και με γροθιές σφιγμένες απειλεί το όρος της πόλης της Σιών, το λόφο της Ιερουσαλήμ.

33 Αλλά να που ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, βίαια σπάει τα κλαδιά των δέντρων! Τα πιο μεγάλα κόπηκαν, τα πιο υψωμένα είναι ριγμένα κάτω. 34 Με σιδερένια αξίνα ρίχνει κάτω τα σύδεντρα του δάσους, οι κέδροι του Λιβάνου οι μεγαλόπρεποι κείτονται καταγής.
