1 Την ημέρα εκείνη στη χώρα του Ιούδα θα ψάλλουν το τραγούδι αυτό:

Έχουμε πόλη ισχυρή·

για να την προστατεύσει

έβαλε ο Κύριος τείχη και προπύργια.

2 Ανοίξτε διάπλατα τις πύλες

να μπει το δίκαιο έθνος,

το έθνος που φυλάει την πίστη,

3 που ο νους του μένει σταθερός.

Ο Θεός τού εξασφαλίζει την ειρήνη,

γιατί ο λαός του τον εμπιστεύεται.

4 Στον Κύριο να ’χετε πάντα εμπιστοσύνη·

γιατί ο Κύριος ο Θεός είναι αιώνιος βράχος.

5 Ταπείνωσε όσους κατοικούσαν στα ψηλώματα,

την πόλη την απρόσιτη τη γκρέμισε·

τη γκρέμισε ως τη γη,

την έριξε στο χώμα.

6 Τα πόδια των φτωχών,

των δύστυχων τα βήματα

θα την καταπατήσουν.

7 Κύριε, ο δρόμος του δικαίου είναι ευθύς·

εσύ ευθυγραμμίζεις τη διαδρομή του δικαίου.

8 Κύριε, περιμέναμε τις κρίσεις σου,

όποιες κι αν είναι αυτές.

Ο πόθος μας είναι

πάντα το όνομά σου να θυμόμαστε.

9 Τη νύχτα η ψυχή μου σε ποθεί·

από τα βάθη μου σ’ αποζητάω.

Όταν οι κρίσεις σου εφαρμόζονται στη γη

μαθαίνει τη δικαιοσύνη η οικουμένη.

10 Αλλά ο ασεβής, ακόμα κι όταν τον ελεείς,

τη δικαιοσύνη δεν τη μαθαίνει·

ακόμα και στη χώρα της ευθύτητας

κάνει το κακό,

δε βλέπει τη μεγαλοσύνη του Κυρίου.

11 Το χέρι σου είναι υψωμένο Κύριε,

μα οι εχθροί σου δεν το βλέπουν.

Ας δουν το ζήλο σου για το λαό σου

κι ας ντραπούν·

ναι, η φωτιά ας κατακάψει τους εχθρούς σου.

12 Κύριε, μας δίνεις την ειρήνη·

γιατί εσύ τα έργα μας

τα ολοκληρώνεις.

13 Κύριε, Θεέ μας,

άλλοι αφεντάδες μάς εξουσίασαν

και όχι εσύ·

αλλά εμείς μονάχα εσένα δοξάζουμε.

14 Εκείνοι είναι νεκροί και δε θα ξαναζήσουν·

οι σκιές δεν θ’ αναστηθούν,

γιατί εσύ ήρθες τιμωρός και τους εξόντωσες,

καθετί εξαφάνισες που τους θυμίζει.

15 Κύριε, πλήθυνες το έθνος σου,

το πλήθυνες κι έτσι δοξάστηκες·

προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις

τα σύνορα άπλωσες της χώρας.

16 Κύριε, οι άνθρωποι στη θλίψη τους σε αναζητούν,

σε προσευχές ξεσπούν,

όταν η τιμωρία σου τους βαραίνει.

17 Καθώς η ετοιμόγεννη σαν έρθει η ώρα της

πάνω στους πόνους της συστρέφεται κι αγκομαχάει,

έτσι κι εμείς γίναμε μπρος σου, Κύριε.

18 Κι εμείς εγκυμονήσαμε, κοιλοπονέσαμε,

αλλά γεννήσαμε αέρα·

στη χώρα δεν μπορέσαμε να φέρουμε τη σωτηρία,

ούτε καινούριους κατοίκους για τη γη.

19 Μα οι νεκροί σου Κύριε, θα ξαναζήσουν,

τα νεκρά σώματα του λαού μου θ’ αναστηθούν.

Ξυπνήστε, εσείς που κείτεστε μέσα στο χώμα

και ψάλτε από χαρά!

Ζωής ακτίνα εσύ είσαι, Κύριε,

γι’ αυτό και η γη θα δώσει πίσω στο φως

αυτούς που δεν είναι παρά σκιά.

20 Εμπρός λαέ μου, πήγαινε στα δώματά σου, κλείσε τις πόρτες πίσω σου· κρύψου για λίγο ως να περάσει η οργή. 21 Γιατί ο Κύριος θα βγει απ’ την ουράνια κατοικία του, τις ανομίες να τιμωρήσει αυτών που κατοικούν στη γη. Η γη θα ξεσκεπάσει το αίμα που χύθηκε σ’ αυτήν και πια δε θα σκεπάζει τους σκοτωμένους της.

5 For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust. 6 The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy. 7 The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just. 8 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. 9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness. 10 Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD. 11 LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.*26.11 at…: or, toward thy people

Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. 21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.*26.21 blood: Heb. bloods
